Iraqi insurgents struck today in coordinated attacks across Baghdad. A police station was hit and a U.S. Army convoy was attacked. The attack on the convoy killed one and was described as well coordinated combining roadside bombs, small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Another suicide bomber struck in downtown Baghdad killing one. Heavy fighting between U.S. Army, supported by Iraqi national guard and gunmen in western Baghdad.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents attacked a police station Saturday in a Sunni Muslim neighborhood in Baghdad where U.S. and Iraqi troops raided a major mosque the day before in a crackdown on Sunni militants. Iraqi officials were trying to identify four decapitated bodies found in Mosul.

Also, insurgents attacked a U.S. Army patrol Saturday in Baghdad, killing one American soldier and injuring nine others, the U.S. military said. The unit came under coordinated attack, which included roadside bombs, small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades, the military said.

In downtown Baghdad, a suicide car bomber detonated his vehicle, killing one civilian and injuring another, witnesses said, as a thunderous rumble of explosions reverberated elsewhere in the Iraqi capital.

American and Iraqi forces detained 30 suspected guerrillas overnight in Mosul, the U.S. military said Saturday.

In western Baghdad, heavy fighting broke out between gunmen and Iraqi National Guards and American troops. Three Iraqi National Guardsmen were killed by roadside bombs in the same area, police said.

The insurgent seem to be increasingly coordinated in their attacks. A U.S. Army spokesman summed it up nicely prior to the Fallujah campaign that stated that they had killed all the dumb ones and that only the smart ones remained. In addition, 4 headless bodies were discovered and Iraqi authorities are attempting to identify them. One has to wonder if control can be established before elections have to take place. Its looking less and less likely

If the insurgents set up in Baghdad it will be much harder to take them out since it will be easier to hide in a larger city. I do not see the situation calming down before and or after the elections. There will be allegations of fraud after the elections etc.... This is a long haul venture and will not end anytime soon.

Well you can not blame the Iraqis for claiming fraud in the elections when we all know who the winner is going to be. Right.

You have not see any political candidate going into the outside of Baghdad to win the population. Right? Specially Allawi, he is so popular and likable that candy and flowers are thrown at his feeds every time he dares to live Baghdad.

The elections will be called "Baghdad" elections, the rest of the country will not have elections "too dangerous"

And occurs we only have one candidate chosen by our government, so what elections?

Marg what are you talking about? Allawi isn't even standing for election in January?

These elections are to elect the Transitional National Assembly which will consist of 275 members - so there won't be a winner.

Also your comments about the elections only being held in Baghdad are inaccurate - a proportional representation system is going to be used which will incorporate all of Iraq, and the assembly should fairly represent the ethnic / religious diversity of the country, including Shia and Sunni Muslims, Kurds, Christians, Assyrians etc.

If you want to know more here's a good article from the BBC about how elections will work and who's being elected:
