I enjoyed reading this thread, thank you everyone for sharing.
It seems like many of those who are considered intellectual giants have been known to believe in more than just hard cold facts. A modern day example
is a book called, "The Monk and the Philospher", which examines a father and son relationship pitting two extremely well educated people and the
differences on how they now see the world. The catch is obvious, one of them left a very promising career of working with top level minds in
molecular biology to devote his entire life to Buddhism.
