This 'Clock' Will Count Every NYC Traffic Death Under Mayor De Blasio

Now that de Blasio is in charge, a grassroots group that works to stop traffic deaths and push back "against driver entitlement" is trying to keep the new mayor's promise to "reduce serious injuries and fatalities" caused by traffic accidents "to zero" by 2024.

I like how the to zero is surrounded by quotations.

It will also announce each death on its Twitter account, @VisionZeroClock.

De Blasio is already doing great things in NYC!

This new vision Zero clock, will announce the death of every street accident death.

This is what it looks like right now.

Will this really help people from getting killed?

I find an announcement on twitter, and a notch on the clock will not do a thing.

From the looks of it, it's doom porn, and politician BULL..

Thanks for keeping NYC safe Mayor De B, will we also get a batman figure to run around town??

It'll do about as much good as the debt clock.

People fail to grasp the grand nature of the world around them. You see it every time somebody throws a fit over any number. Say this years Chicago homicide number of 421. Big number, right? 400 murders in a year!!

It's nothing without context. Consider how many people live in Chicago that arent affected. Consider Chicago has fallen down the murder hierarchy chart. Consider this years number is the lowest in forty years.

So for a few weeks or months even New yorkers might be shocked by the clock ticking up. Keep in mind there are 8.3 million suckers living on that cesspool island. That doesnt include commuters.

This years there has been fewer than 150 pedestrian deaths to cars/buses. So you've got a .0018% chance of being killed as a pedestrian.

Things like scared straight or showing high school kids smashed up cars only carry their shock or deterring effect for about two weeks then normalcy returns and the high risk behavior along with it.

This sign will just become normal and be ignored in no time at all. As the debt clock has. As Salons stupid "gun death" chart has. As everything has.

But, hey, who am I to deny a politician the joy of having "done something."

It just might. If this thing is in enough peoples faces often enough they may begin to realize they need to look where they walk or how they cycle, drive, etc.

Then again as posted above they may just ignore like the debt clock. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

The idea of this so-called clock, is ludicrous. It really addresses nothing, aside from being a PR move for visibility (hey citizens, look I'm doing something). Awareness? I mean, what pedestrian or automobile driver or bike rider isn't aware that traffic accidents can result in fatalities? If there are any, they shouldn't be anywhere near a damned street or highway.

The problem is traffic patterns, enforcement, weather conditions and stupid people. Mostly stupid people- driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, pedestrians wearing earbuds blaring loud music while tapping on a phone and walking blindly into traffic (I've seen in dozens of times); over the summer I watched, from the comfort of my kitchen, a cyclist furiously texting drive her bike square into a traffic sign. A death clock won't fix this behavior (which isn't limited to cell phone use by the way).

I read an article in the NEJM this morning, oddly enough about automobile crashes, that had a great quote: "the role of regulation may be controversial, but the role of individual responsibility is clear."

Don't you know there are no accidents, only human error. Foul weather, distraction, DUI, every accident, or collision is preventable if we only pay attention or don't drive under certain conditions. That is what our traffic cops were saying when winter started, weather is not an excuse for an accident. Hmmm so i guess if police get in an 'accident' it is not their fault because they would never be the cause of one, ok...

I think the citizens would be more interested in an excessive police brutality counter instead.I'd be.

"driver entitlement" ????

I think drivers know that they're not "entitled" to cause injury and/or death

??

Some accidents are accidents.....

My city isn't made for bikes. We have sidewalks, but the law says that have to ride in the road.

I don't know how many times I've been cut off by bikes darting in and out of traffic, or riding slower than what the traffic should be flowing at.

The same people riding these bikes also tend to have a certain level of "arrogance" about them -- as though they are so much better because they ride a bike. I really dislike people on bikes in the road.

It would be find if they widened the roads and added bike-only lanes. It would be safer for everyone all around, and the traffic would be able to flow better.

I'm sorry, but if I'm riding my Huffy, I'm going to be on the defensive against 2,000 pound killing machines zooming around me. I'm NOT going to act like I'm untouchable and be ignorant of the traffic around me.
