Except that communism as espoused by Marx and Engels ... really isn't like that very much at all. The failed Soviet system is usually conflated generically with socialism/communism, and there are critical differences between the systems, the biggest being, to my mind that the Soviet state was absolutely authoritarian for most of its history.

Yes, Marx and Engels suggested that history can be viewed as a conflict (or struggle) between the relatively large group of workers (i.e. most people) and the relatively small group of individuals who own the means of production. (Mostly in The Communist Manifesto a document that Marx/Engels were commissioned by a small group of German radicals that were ALREADY in existence to write.) There were at the time (and are now) many different types of socialism and communism and ideas about what the ideas imply for social and political systems ... neither Marx nor Engels soley originated these ideas. The ultimate ideal of Marx and Engels, some folks might be surprised to discover, was that the Government would go away COMPLETELY, and that the People would represent the ultimate power in the state.

ADDED IN EDIT: To be clear, before anyone goes there, I am personally NOT a fan of communism. It is an idealistic pipe dream that would be virtually impossible to implement at the current level of human development. I believe that the strongest economic systems are those that seek a balance of power sometimes called "mixed economies" where private business, the government and the majority of wage-earners/consumers each have a role to play.

To my mind, all extremes, left or right, are equally obnoxious. But that's just me.

The line can be a little gray at times but authoritarian is exactly where we are headed. With monitoring of all forms of communication, cameras on every corner and satellites on every road, the PC police editing and deleting whatever they don't like, the lies and propaganda, police out of control harassing, beating and killing sounds like communism to me. We cannot hold our government accountable for anything. The government controls the capitalism. When I read the story of guy who had his email deleted and computers stolen that was the throw my hands in the air and scream WTF. We have been loaded upon with law after law, more rules than a daycare center and more taxes than necessary, lack of decision making and money spending choices.

We think we have freedom because we can go buy an extra large soda when we want....wait, nope, not so. Our children's lunch menus are decided by the government. When and where we smoke a cigarette is decided by the government. Whether or not we can have strawberry plants in our front yards is decided by the government. Our water and food quality is controlled by the government. Our life decisions are being removed from us and we can't stop it. A cave's not even safe any longer. We can't get away from it. Remember in War of the Worlds, and shows like them? There was no escape and it was only a matter of time. Personally, I'm waiting for the day of the 3 sea shells and the ensuing revolt from the real people of which I hope to be a contributing member.

We have to finally see the FACTS. What we have become is an Oligarchy. If you have never heard this word before please look it up.



Russia is and was an Oligarchy and the US has also morphed into this form of rule. Even Nazi Germany was an Oligarchy Hitler did not rule alone. We need to understand and learn to walk before we can start running. Progressives are in control of most of the world using this form of rule. They use the control of money,laws,media to keep the control.



In the US 40% of GDP is directly related to the Government. They control banking,health care,Auto Industry,Stock Market and a host of other entities. In short they want more power and to retain what they have already won.



What can we do............The only way this will change is if we get the progressive mindset out of our schools and homes. It is a disease that is still spreading and will continue until it consumes every last foolish mind that will feed it.

I consider the US a corporate oligarchy. The elections are rigged because it does not matter which candidate is elected, either will bow down to corporate interests when in office. The average voter is incredibly uninformed and a third party can never make it because the average idiot has been sold on the idea that voting for a third party candidate is a waste of a vote.

Legislation passed benefits the big corporations and essentially allows them to rob the working class. The police state is becoming more militarized and more intrusive yet the average citizen does not see this because there are enough distractions on the TV to keep them in the dark.

Eventually we will have a breaking point, what sparks it remains to be seen. My guess is a catastrophic event.

I'm British. By the way I fought communists in college, literally. I am well aware of exactly what a communist is and Obama is nowhere near being a communist.

Anyone who thinks Obama is a communist or that the US is heading towards communism does not know the meaning of the word. What I see is people who know little to no history tossing around words they do not understand. What is even more depressing is that people try and compare the US to Rome, or Germany before the Nazis or Russia before the Communists. This shows a complete lack of logical or critical thinking. It is a lazy way of thinking that allows people to be lead around by the nose by tossing out a keywords. Common people your better than that. Pick up a book.

The people who pull our collective strings are the same people who control the flow of wealth. An Oligarchy is a form of rule were a few rule the many.

You come into a thread like this one and call everyone idiots and make fun of things they say, then you make fun of links they post, then you make fun of references they make. You have yet to make one interesting statement backed by proof, references or material.

"I fought real communists in college".....WTF does that even mean and how does that statement make you have a better understanding of communism than any of us? That statement holds about as much weight as me saying "I fought little green men in your moms bedroom last night."
