A great idea from Iceland again !!

Convert CO2 from geothermal electric plants into methanol to run engines.

Don't know whats involved, but sounds like a possibility.

Iceland already uses the geothermal energy it sits on top of to heat the whole country, but it could now be set to run its cars on volcano power.

FastCoExist is the company behind the radical idea to make cars run on volcano power.

Volcanoes make the huge amount of energy within the Earth’s core accessible from its surface. A power company in Iceland already uses this to its advantage by producing electricity; however, the process results in large amounts of fairly concentrated carbon dioxide being emitted. ..............

I do not see how they can do that.

Methanol is CH3OH

I acknowledge they have the C and the O Atoms. They need to find a lot of H atoms, that would be Hydrogen.

If they don't have the Hydrogen they are not making Methanol

Both of those use catalysts that contain large amounts of Hydrogen. It is NOT making Methanol from CO2. You need to introduce Hydrogen in some form or rather.

This is what happens to the MSM when you do away with science writers and let just anyone do your stories. Great headlines but crappy science.

Where are the Icelanders going to get their Hydrogen from?

Water ?

maybe ?

If I understand this right, the CO2 is in water solution, so it gets hydrogen from there. You need a lot water though, as it doesn't absorb lot of CO2.
