That's the New Madrid zone, southern end. We've been fairly quiet for a good while now.
We like it that way.

ETA: Thanks to all of you for keeping this info current. I really appreciate the hard work and your insights.

The only thing I could find is this:
28 November 1880 Argyll, Scotland~5.2 Largest recorded earthquake in Scotland.
So I guess that makes today's quake the Largest recorded at 5.5, unless it is downgraded.
and
this:

A Scottish town was today shaken by an earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale.
The tremor in Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, lasted a few seconds and no one was injured.
Bennett Simpson, seismologist at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, said the that the quake occurred at 9.27am.

Here is a link for you, they have not updated with today's quake though

And it still hasn't
must be a mistake if BGS hasn't listed it after 4 hours! even less likely if GFZ hasn't seen it

I'm surprised EMSC has even put it on, only one source, Laboratoire de Détection et de Géophysique -- Bruyères-le-Châtel, France (LDG)
2014-10-09 19:15:39.3 55.29 N 3.96 W 2 mb 5.5 A: SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM LDG

not far from my home town of Ayr
do you want me to phone the relatives there and see if they felt it?

I just compared the EMSC location and the LDG map, they don't match

as they say in Scotland its "cookup"
edit on 10u28128114 by muzzy because: (no reason given)

even more less convincing ...... if it was a 5.5 even Puterman over in Ireland would have felt it and been on here in a flash. Unless he is over in England at the moment.

How come this isn't in Europe-Mediterranean Seismic Center (emsc-csem.org)?

And not in USGS either?

And I don't find any news about it either, must have been malfunction. I don't think such deep earthquakes are even possible
in Scotland, 120 km depth.

And I found this:

I wonder if USelessGS realize that the link "view location in Google Maps" doesn't actually show the epicenter, although it does settle over the spot.
Geez I hate all these "new" versions of stuff, new Google Maps is a total disaster, full of junk most people don't want to use.
I still use the classic GMaps when I have a choice, but when you click a link usually it goes to to the crap version.
USGS the same, I hardly ever go there now.

That Southern East Pacific Rise quake was a long time coming, big gap between M7+'s
But in the last 14 years its not the longest gap.

Something to ponder while we wait for the next Major quake
in that period 2000-2014 (not counting this last gap), when there was a gap of 60 days or more, 4 out of 5 cases resulted in the next M7+ either being a M8+ or there was a M8+ within 20-30 days of the end of that gap.

17/11/2013 Scotia Sea 7.8
1/04/2014 Chile 8.2
-135 days gap

23/06/2014 Rat Is 7.9
9/10/2014 SEPacRise 7.1
-108 days gap
?????

1/04/2007 Solomons 8.1
16/07/2007 Honshu7.2
-106 days gap
15/08/2007 Peru 8.0
-30 days later

24/02/2001 Moluuca 7.1
3/06/2001 Kermadecs 7.3
-99 days gap
23/06/2001 Peru 8.4
-20 days later

20/08/2006 Scotia Sea 7.1
15/11/2006 Kuril 8.3
-87 days gap

12/04/2012 Baja 7.1
3/07/2012 NZ 7.1
-82 days gap
12/08/2012 Okhotsk 7.7
-40 days later

based on eyeballing the graphs here
just playing with time and numbers, doubt it would stand up over a longer time period, say 100 years
edit on 10u28328314 by muzzy because: (no reason given)

the older bar graphs aren't much help it this as they don't show the size, just that one happened, thats why I changed the style later
monster gap 1922, 7 months, will look into that
edit on 1000000028328314 by muzzy because: (no reason given)

yeah, huge gap, but 71 days after the gap before the next M8+
31/01/1922 o/s Humbolt County, California, USA 7.6
1/09/1922 o/s Yilan, Taiwan 7.6
-213 days gap
11/11/1922 Chile 8.3
71 days after

as you were
thought I spotted a trend is all.
and not very scientific, as the gap is measured by subtracting one date from another, with no allowance for the number of days/month in it
