another one, M4.8, to the north this time, out at sea June 26 2014 at 3:59:44UTC ( 3:59:44pm NZST)
2076 Felt Reports
I didn't feel it, I was in Otaki, which is closer than home to the epicenter, but I was clearing up after working on the roof today, moving about, less chance you would feel it. I see 20 "Light" reports from Otaki.

Muzzy . . . sometimes when I try and picture you rooting around on your roof's (sp?) . . . with all that rockin' and rollin' going on down there . . . I keep thinking I hope someone is tying you down with bungee cords from 3 different directions. LOL.

What safety options DO you have on such scores? Sounds real precarious to me.

One quake that woke me up in Taipei in the 1970 era . . . moved my single bed back and forth across the terrazzo floor probably 6" or so. And it was only a 5.X quake.

I'd think that standing near the edge of a roof when a good jolt hit . . . could be a realllll disconcerting and hazardous experience???

anything over 3 metres above the ground has to have edge protection (scaffolding) or wear safety harness and lines.
I mostly do flat roofing, so sliding off isn't really an issue.
Been a while since I felt one on a roof, always a bit of creaking and movement going on, especially on new construction.

Interesting that yesterday morning's (NZST) 4.9 came when it did, as the aftershocks from the 2014 Jan 6.3mw had tapered off to just a couple of M1's per day. Still on the Pa Valley Fault, so considered an aftershock

comparing yesterdays two high mag 4's on IRIS SNZO
0.07ML difference in magnitude
7.54km difference in depth
1km difference in distance ( from SNZO)

perhaps shows what difference depth makes, or the rock structure is different West of the Tararua Mt Range to that on the East, probably a bit of both,
see how the Wanganui trace is more snub nosed (instant)

IRIS show the Travel Times to SZNO as follows;
Eketahuna quake
P = +18s, S = +31s
Cook Strait quake
P= +15s, S = +27s
confirming what I said about the depth and geology. 3 seconds in it

GOOD. VERY RELIEVED to know that.

Now I can have visions of you dangling from scaffolding on ropes. LOL.

Joking.

Flat roofs. Hmmmm . . . Have a lot of those here in the Southwest . . . Hacienda sorts of design. Tons of leak problems.

But then adobe doesn't handle quakes all that well either. LOL. Great for temperature, though.

I don't have much of a clue about quakes anywhere . . . including NZ. I just love to read your info and analysis. THX TONS.

With Muana Loa perking up after 30 years too, and the increased seismic activity around Alaska lately, things sure are getting interesting for the Ring of Fire.

Indeed, but may I just observe that whilst Semisopochnoi in Alaska has started having a bunch of earthquakes commencing on the 9th June and still continuing, other volcanoes such as Snow (Chirpoi Islands - Russia) and Chirinkotan (Russia) have just been changed down to Green status so whilst some increase others decrease. Does that mean they are getting less interesting and thus balance out the getting interesting to a normal level I wonder?

BTW, just to add:

Surface instrumental observations are absent; there are no seismic networks on any of the volcanoes on the Kurile Islands.

SVERT report 23 June 2014 (in English)

Bit of a gap in the world network then!!

A new version (interim) of QVSData Standard has been released. If you already have the program the upgrade should be detected, downloaded and installed for you.

If not, or you don't have the program, see my signature.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL THAT YOU RUN THE CONFIG PATCHES IN THE DATA CENTRE BEFORE USING THE NEW VERSION.

This corrects the Australian data but it also revamps the database to use the new Earthquake Data Assembler in the next release.

Pro users your RC1 version will issue tomorrow evening.

Chiming in here to add my brother just texted my asking if he felt my house shake like his was just right down the street... I was just lying in bed ats' ing and missed it! But in hindsight there was a low low "rum" for about 20 seconds that I didn't think twice about. Chalked it up to military air traffic. Darn! 70 miles south of tucson in cochise county, Az

Eta: Oh, I have an older brick house and he doesn't, I'm thinking that is the reason. He said his whole bed shook against the wall and some hanging pots and pans were moving on their hooks. Crazy!

Pretty proud of myself for personally predicting that 5.0 today.

On that note - the earth seems quite active the last 3 days, especially in the US. Kind of surprised there isnt much solar activity.
