Hmmm ......
a 6.9 quake
6.9km deep
on the 69th day of the year
spooky

of course it actually was 6.88Mw according the NCEQC (rounded to 6.9)
and 6.99km deep (rounded to 7km)
but it was definitely the 69th day of the year
earthquake.usgs.gov...-solutions
sounds good anyway.

Those are the waves making their way back around. The energy from a quake that big will circle the earth several times before dying out. pretty fascinating stuff!!!

So ....... it's a 69er. Can EQs do that. I always thought it more likely that they would be back to back. We have seen a few of those.

Somehow I knew yesterday, that something will happen there. The swarm seemed a bit strange.
But my hangover prevented me from asking on your opinions on it.

At least everybody is safe. Could be worse if something like this would happen in the LA region

Just saw a bigger one pop up. Let's hope this is all there is.

Well I am really surprised, I thought Eureka was going to be rubble. We shook pretty good and there was sound also. My husband thought it was a huge thunder that shook the house but the movement kept going, his first earthquake!

So we get the sound and shake 2 hours So of the Eureka and they are fine there, interesting. I am hoping this was a release of pressure that will ease the fault.

Surprised that I actually slept really well, i was really worried it was just a precursor to something bigger!

We had a chance to realize our weak areas of readiness. For instance my contact lenses I realized I don't want to go through an emergency without them! It took so long for information to come I had to turn on the computer and it is so slow! Then they were not even showing the quake for about 5 mins more and no info for Tsunami was up yet. handicapped by slow info!

OK...that quake cam is kinda creepy...to a degree. I can see that the drum where the graft lines are is rotating right to left, the pixels make it look like the drum is rotating left to right.

Is the needle constantly moving a result of traffic, or aftershocks?

Has anyone actually seen that thing go wobbly live? Are there any video recording of it doing so?
I never have, don't look in much, just when someone brings it up, haven't got the patience to sit for hours monitoring it.
Maybe I could split my screen (project to a 2nd screen in ControlPanel/Devices?Display) and keep it on another screen (old desktop screen) to keep an eye on it.

haha, makes you wonder what they get up to in those seismo offices.
All changed again
now;
6.8Mw
Depth 18km, or 21.5km if you read the Mww line
earthquake.usgs.gov...-solutions

the spookiness has evaporated
just another M6 offshore.....

now 4.3mb www.emsc-csem.org...
that is the 3,022nd aftershock of the Kefalonia 5.8ML (6.1Mw), 26/01/14 and 5.7ML (6.0Mw), 03/02/14 according to NOA (who gave that one a 4.0ML). That is, if you include the 5.7 as an aftershock of the first 5.8, which I do.

this timeline graph shows the aftermath (1041 hours (rounded down) since that first earthquake)

I'd say the stakes (odds) have been lowered.
Don't forget a M6 is a big release of energy.
No quakes mean a build up of tension, quakes mean release of tension.
Same with the 6.8 off California, less chance of the 9.0 ........

But what about............

a 9.9 quake
9.9km deep
on the 99th day of the year
which happens to be April 9th

"See that drum over there? Needle is going up and down some!"
"Yep, looks like a 7.6 to me"
"Agreed Jim, shall we post it as that"
"Nah Scotty, give them something to cry about. Make it an 8.2. That should get the blogs going."
"Are ye sure Jim? There many bloggers out there who look at these and will be saying it is not right. Sort of 'It's and earthquake Jim, but not as we show it.'"
"You are right Scotty. Make it a 6.9 and then we can bring it down to a 5.8 later when no one is still looking."
"I just checked the drum Jim. It is still going. I can't hear myself think for the racket of that drilling rig they are using for the new subway. Perhaps we should not post it?"
"Pour me another three fingers of Scotch Scotty and we will play it by ear."

The two "questionable" mag 6 quakes in Feb that were posted by the USGS have now finally been reduced to below Mag 6. See the corrected years figures on my quake watch blog
