Plenty shaking and today we have a complete disaster - 1/2" of snow. We are doomed I tell you, doomed.

The world is strangely quiet/ Getting to be a long break between Mag 7 quakes now. A major quake will happen soon. China nearly made it (7.3 ML but 6.9 Mw)

It is quiet, Puterman. It's as if the quakes have taken a backseat to the volcanoes for a few weeks.

Hey quake people, the PNSN has resurrected their spectrograms, and they are hugely improved. What a great new resource for Pacific Northwest watchers.

There are spectros for volcanoes, spectros for different tectonic regions, and spectros for Episodic Tremor.
I'm giddy!

The folks at the PNSN did a terrific job putting together a FAQ page and detailed, dedicated pages showing examples of all sorts of signals: teleseisms, local quakes, regional quakes, electronic noise, wind, glaciers, landslides, etc.

Kudos to the PNSN!


This is an 10 minute example from earlier today showing the Mag 2.5 at 13:42 UTC near Mt Saint Helens, and its aftershocks.

Ok something is going on here in SC; the whole ass-end of my trailer just shook like the washer was off tilt and it ain't on folks. Thought at first it was snow falling off roof, but a check local helios Hodge SC Pauline SC showed it's more than that!. Be back in a minute with screen caps; haven't seen anything yet on USGS. Good call with the helicorder. I tried posting one but can't from the phone. I'm almost literally sitting on top of one of those machines. It's kinda neat seeing such a local bit of data.

Fortunately this one is small. It could very easily have been a major one down near Charleston again.

The one at Bird SC is the nearest one to me and it's also very near the Haile goldmine in Kershaw so I tend to keep an eye on it and Jenkinsville just north of Columbia and Pauline just south of Spartanburg to triangulate. They've shut King's Mt down on the master page I ref earlier, but there are other King's Mt helis, but I have to hunt and peck for it.

Initial, manual review for that quake USGS: 3.0 Ml with uncertainty error of .3

Considering the duration magnitude (Md) was about 3.3, the Ml for that quake should be about a 3.5 to 3.8. Bet that is revised tomorrow after Jamie at UU gets a hold of it. The sharp intensity of it should make it go up a bit once reviewed again by UU. Just a guess. But saw it come in. Also, that quake is within about 5 km of the epicenter of the big 1959 Hebgen Lake quake. Delayed aftershock, perhaps.

She is strobing hard, right now.

Earthquakes - Mag 6 are plummeting towards sub 100 in a 12 month period and the global calculated Mag 5 quakes for the last 52 weeks is approaching sub 4000 which is lower than in many many years.

The latest weekly geophysical report is available - see my signature.

The massive amount of pink at the bottom right of the lines is the indicator that things are quiet. Mag 7 'no quake' gap is getting towards the longest I have recorded so far and the same with the Mag 8 'no quake' gap

In addition to that Category force storms seem to be on hold - none for 3 weeks now yet we are progressing towards the time of year when there are not many anyway. Currently the only thing that has had a slight rise is the SFU values for the sun and they are nowhere near where they should be for solar max. In the same week in 2012 there were storm amounting to 8 units of category force (see the 28 Dec link below) and now there are none.

All of these are tracked in the weekly geophysical reports and there is well over a years worth (61 weeks) of weekly reports now commencing with 28 Dec 2012 - post apocalypse survival!! (Link to all as a category)

The intensity, or dramatic nature of the eruptions over the past 5-6 weeks has been higher than the earthquake headlines, that's all.

South Carollina had another - 3.2 in the same area as the 4.1
