I honestly can't make out these emoticons, and mouse-hovering over them doesn't tell you what they represent.
Plus, I find the current symbols to be quite ugly in design, confusing and weird looking.
In fact, they're the ugliest I've ever seen!

Thanks, that's my complaint of the day!

I thought new ones were in the works but have not heard anything more.

I really loved the old ones, especially the one with the 9mm.

What is this one
It is against the T&Cs to tell you what I think it is.

And these two,
difference is what?

These two

These two look like the belong on robots

Don't know.

I actually agree 110%...

But I believe this issue has been raised before. The old emoticons were nicer and had cleaner graphics. These new ones are just plain and boring. I'm not sure if anyone is still working on them as it has been a long time since the update, but it would be nice.

I'm not holding my breath.

The site owners dont care, this has been raised so many times its not funny.

At the end of the day I guess its only a small thing and it doesnt effect the information which is why we are here.

But by the same token I cant imagine it would be difficult to change them back, someone in high places likes them Im guessing and from all the feedback it would appear they are the only ones.

Question: does anyone, anyone at all prefer the new emoticons???

Id give you a thumbs up emoticon but sadly its been taken away (I wanna use a sad face emoticon but in protest Im just gonna write *sad face*)

I preferred the old emoticons too.

I am boycotting the new ones in protest.

Actually when you hover the mouse, you can see a _javascript notation - the end string is the meaning of that particular emoticon.
However I do agree that the old school emotes were way cooler !!

Ed: I hasten to add - that is only if you are posting and can see the emote board !

Hope it helps ... for what it's worth.

While we are at it, could the 'hover function' be applied to emoticons in posts ? Admin ?

And ...

lol.

I'm not supposing to speak for Skeptic Overlord, but he does know it's a sore spot, and I don't think it's that he doesn't care. I think it just isn't high on the list of bugs to work out of the new site. We've got members with millions of stars running around. lol. SO did offer to let the membership come up with new emoticons within guidelines. But nothing has ever come out of it as far as I know.

The offer is still open I would imagine. Anyone who can come up with a new set that falls within the guidelines only need contact SO for consideration. They must be in .png format if I remember correctly.

*insert old smiley here*

I hear that codes for the old emoticons still exist. Maybe that meanwhile, we could simply learn what those codes are.

You must mean the image directory for the old icons. As the codes like ":-)" still produce this
.

The only new icon I like is this one:
Other than that, I think the new icons are unfitting of the "new" ATS.

Just click "quote" on this post to see their codes. I've listed them with a letter so that you can find the right one when you click "quote".

Oh boy, just seeing these makes me nostalgic.

Thank Sublimecraft, he already did most of the job: www.abovetopsecret.com...

He even gives the codes for more exotic emoticons, like the "chair" or the "go mod!".

Why even try to create a new set when the old ones were MUCH clearer in their meaning?

The new roll-out was months ago, with all the many complaints it seems it must be at the very bottom of the to-do list.

BTW I forgot about some of the members having nearly 2,000,000 stars. Funny that. (Unsure which emoticon to use here)

ETA: Thanks Swanne

The old site's overall look was more professional and much easier to believe and trust...Come to think of it maybe that's why they changed it!!

Sadly I have to agree, I have stopped using the emoticons because I can not understand them at all, they do look like a work in progress but the progress has just been hindered and going to no where.

I hope that is something new is coming soon.

I agree, I couldn't stand them from the start (and they worse at the very beginning of the change over).

There was a thread started back during the design transition that deal with the smiley/emoticon issue, but it seems to have since gone into the ATS dust bin.

I've always liked these.

And here's a list of more familiar ones, with some pretty unique and cool ones.

I made a _javascript...script for use with chrome/chromium or greasemonkey/firefox awhile ago to add more smileys to the new posts page, if anyone is interested in using it, I could also add the old smileys to it

userscripts.org...
