Report: 500 Chinese lawmakers leave office over election fraud

This is a story we don't read about ever. Hundreds of politicians caught accepting or giving bribes along with election fraud, are forced to resign, some may even see prosecution.

But since this is coming from China, could this also be some sort of regime change?

(CNN) -- More than 500 Chinese lawmakers accused of election fraud have been forced from office, the country's official Xinhua news agency reported.

The officials were disqualified, dismissed or resigned on Saturday following elections in Hunan at the Hengyang municipal people's congress, the local legislative body.

Fifty-six provincial lawmakers offered bribes to 518 municipal lawmakers and 68 staff members, a statement from the Hunan provincial people's congress said, according to Xinhua. The total amount of money involved exceeded 110 million yuan, or $18.14 million U.S. dollars, according to the statement.

The 56 provincial lawmakers were disqualified Saturday and 512 municipal legislator resigned, according to Xinhua.
Another five provincial lawmakers who didn't offer bribes were dismissed and three municipal lawmakers who didn't accept bribes resigned for "serious dereliction of duty," the statement said. Another six municipal lawmakers who took bribes had already been transferred.

Tong Mingqian, then party chief of Hengyang, was in charge of the election.

"Tong breached his duty as an official in charge and was directly responsible for this case," the statement said.
He was fired December 21 as vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, according to Xinhua.

Cases of those suspected of breaking the law will be prosecuted, the statement said.

Wow. If the NSA was working for the people of the USA, imagine the political bribes that they could expose in the USA! Obviously the Chinese government spies on its lawmakers, and serves justice when it needs to be. There are things that I like about the American government more than the Chinese from what I've read, but just imagine if something like that happened here...

Just to put that into perspective...

I think the Chinese people are becoming increasingly put off by the amount of corruption going on, and there are comments on the Chinese equivalent to twitter which is followed fairly closely by the government I guess.

This means we are likely to see central government appempting to remedy the situation and try to get more support from the people. This is probably one such instance and it sends a fairly clear message to others that if you get caught taking bribes you will get your bits chopped off. (not literally!)

Yes, unfortunately this kind of lobbying/bribing goes on all over the world.

In 2014 America, firing 500 corrupt treasonist lying politicans would be a good start, we could do so many good things if we removed the chains that bind us, and they link directly to DC...
