Ethiopian 767 overrun

An Ethiopian 767 (identified as ET-AQW) on a scheduled flight from Addis Ababa to Kilimanjaro was forced to divert upon arrival, due to a "crippled Cessna" on the runway. For some reason the crew chose to land at Arusha in Tanzania, which was roughly 31 miles away, instead of flying the 155 miles to Nairobi. The runway at Arusha is roughly 4600 feet long.

The aircraft stopped with the nose gear off the end of the runway, but no reported injuries among the passengers or crew.

Wonder if they will attempt a take off from there? 767-300 takeoff distance at MTOW 7900ft - 8300ft. 4600ft seems awfully short even for empty.

With it only being 30 miles, they can give them enough fuel for about 100 miles (which is a drop in the bucket), strip off what they can easily remove, and they should be able to get it out of there.

I remember about fifteen years ago when a DC-8 landed at Iosco County (4280x75) thinking it was Oscoda Wurtsmith (11800x200). Whoops!

They successfully departed Arusha after lightening the aircraft. It sounds like the crew screwed up in the first place though. Both Arusha and Kilimanjaro have runways lined up in the same direction, with Arusha being much shorter. The crew was advised of the Cessna that was stuck, but had over 10,000 feet of runway left they could have used. They called airport in sight as required, but when flying their base leg the tower lost radio contact with them. A short time later they received a call from Arusha that a 767 had just landed there and went off the runway.
