The guy was right. Magnesium can really cause an explosion if it is fine, but it has to be under pressure to cause an increase in it's effect. It
quickly combines with the oxygen in the air. Russia uses this technology to make percussion bombs that can be almost as destructive as a nuke.
In this case, the casing was a little too packed and he should have never used aluminum foil. I don't think this guy knew this was going to happen.
If he did he may have not actually understand the principles of this.
