Back to Bardarbunga: Camera 2 is still useless, that hasn't shown anything for like 3 days. Camera 1 has nice visibility once again. You can see how there isn't any snow near the lava flows.

yes I took a couple of full size screenshots of the black lava flow against the white snow background
images 28/09/2014

I may be a bit slower putting up the web cam screenshots for a few days, with Daylight Saving turned over 28/09 here the conversion is 13 hours instead of 12 hours back to UTC. I wasn't much good with my times tables at school, up to 12 I was OK, beyond that I was lost, really glad when they allowed calculators in class!! (showing my age).
I have set up an Excel spreadsheet to make sure I get the conversion right.

Latest images show the snow has partially melted, it rained I believe.

5.5 Magnitude earthquake in Bardarbunga, at depth of about 5.6km. Strongest earthquake for a while, again in the caldera. Earthquake count will go lower because of the weather. There are strong winds which mask the lower magnitude earthquakes effectively. There will be stormy weather for few days. There seems to be very humid weather currently, but you can still see the lava fountains.

There is something strange going in these (but could be the weather):

yeah you are right about less earthquakes recorded, only 15 below Mag 1, usually in the 30's-60's per day,
all up just 61 events above 90.01% quality for the 29th Sept., way down.
You think its due to the wind?
I haven't noticed that before, been a couple of Gales come through during the 11Aug-29Sept period.
27th and 28th was showing a retraction of earthquakes away from Holuhraun back to Bardarbunga,

the Institute of Earth Sciences are saying;
"The subsidence of the Bardarbunga caldera continues with slightly slower rate and is now around 40 cm pr. 24 hours.
There are no signs of the eruption being in decline."

so not sure what the seisimic retraction back to Bardarbunga is about?

What is happening here? The caldera suddenly dropped about 20cm, then continued to drop rapidly, but then again jumped almost 20cm, only to lower back afterwards. And its both 30min and 180min average.

Now the caldera is about 8 meters lower than when the activity started.

There is still really windy, good indicator is that smoke plume, which doesn't rise. The smoke goes almost horizontally.

Not from when activity started, only back to the 12th.

I've heard something about CME's effecting GPS maybe?
Only other thought is it's like the lid of a sauce pan boiling with water and the lid goes up and down, but that might be me wishing it's that simplistic

I see new earthquake activity starting in fissure. Perhaps there is new magma rising from the mantle, there are some really deep earthquakes detected under it, like 15 hours ago 2.4 magnitude earthquake in depth of 13,3 km. This is one of the deepest earthquakes detected during this activity. The fissure is dotted with low magnitude quakes from long distance, clear indicator of magma movement in vertical direction. Subsidence of the caldera has stopped again. It has remained same for hours.

Webcamera shows kinda dramatic view. The clouds are really low and moving fast. The visibility is so bad that the fissure eruption is not visible.

EDIT: There starts to snow again
EDIT2: The weather turned perfectly clear. The weather is changing fast there.

That's where the lava flows into river. The area covered in lava is now quite large, it has already cut the nearby road. Extend of lava field:

The MILA webcams are on Vaðalda and looking towards southwest towards the lava fields.

The last few weeks of geophysical reports have been somewhat lacking and last weeks was an unmitigated disaster of mislabeling!

I think I have got it sorted this week, and this weeks report includes the celestial full report from the start of the month. Click the images for larger versions.

Last night I saw jeep there, and it looked like it was already gone or they were packing it. Its weird they decide to move it during the night, or someone stole it. I didn't take screenshot from that though, only monitored it for few minutes.

There is again awfully many quakes in caldera.

no one said the link was 404'd??

here it is off the 30.09.2014 images page

big picture again

if you look below that one there are 5 images prior from 14:50:12 onwards where you can see the lava slowly hitting the river

I see what happend with that big picture. It just happened this evening again.
I accidentally saved them as a gif pic, when converted to png it separates the colours somewhat into almost art type look
these would look great hung on the wall, 6ftx 3ft size

without the writing off course

Bardarbunga is now in total blackout. None of the cameras show anything, the weather is really bad there. There is heavy snowstorm, temperature about -1°C and 12 m/s wind (max 15 m/s). The weather should turn clear around the evening though. Because of the weather conditions, small earthquakes cannot be filtered from wind noise. It also causes extremes in GPS graphs.

I couldn't be bothered merging the graphs, you can get the drift from how it is anyway.
Wonder how long this will continue?
Will have to do them in sets of 2 to get them to fit the page, maybe string them all together later for a one off graph.

cams back on right now
