Government Takeover: White House Forces Obamacare Insurers To Cover Unpaid Patients At A Loss

Of all of the last-minute delays, website bungles, and Presidential whims that have marred the roll-out of Obamacare’s subsidized insurance exchanges, what happened on Thursday, December 12 will stand as one of the most lawless acts yet committed by this administration. The White House—having canceled Americans’ old health plans, and having botched the system for enrolling people in new ones—knows that millions of Americans will enter the new year without health coverage. So instead of actually fixing the problem, the administration is retroactively attempting to force insurers to hand out free health care—at a loss—to those whom the White House has rendered uninsured. If Obamacare wasn’t a government takeover of the health insurance industry, then what is it now?

On Wednesday afternoon, health policy reporters found in their inboxes a friendly e-mail from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, announcing “steps to ensure Americans signing up through the Marketplace have coverage and access to the care they need on January 1.” Basically, the “steps” involve muscling insurers to provide free or discounted care to those who have become uninsured because of the problems with healthcare.gov.

So, instead of trying to fix the law, the administration is deciding to force insurance companies to provide insurance at a loss. They are also trying to claim this is voluntary, except for:

Except that the government is using the full force of its regulatory powers, under Obamacare, to threaten insurers if they don’t comply. All you have to do is read the menacing language in the new regulations that HHS published this week, in which HHS says it may throw otherwise qualified health plans off of the exchanges next year if they don’t comply with the government’s “requests.”

I don't even know where to begin with this one... This administration is so arrogant and out of touch that they refuse to admit something is broken. Instead of trying to fix it, they take it further down the crapper by essentially hijacking the healthcare system and now the insurance system.

Do we need healthcare reform? yes
Do we need insurance reform? yes

Just because a version of the Affordable Care Act works in Massachusetts does not mean that same system is going to work in St. Louis, Los Angeles or Tippecanoe Indiana.

This entire mess reminds me of this -

HA! Obama is turning around and biting the hand that feeds. The insurance companies pretty much wrote this craptasticular bill, now when the public (finally) learns how the bill works and are upset, Obama extorts the insurance companies. Serves the insurance companies right, give them a taste of the lies and deceit that we experience daily.

Thing is the insurance companies won't take a loss. They will just raise the premiums for those that are still able to pay them.

That is how corporations work.

When the government cuts into your profits just screw your customers over.

Yea, you're right. The consumers will still end up taking the hit... Which in a roundabout way will screw up Obamacare even WORSE. Because now the policies on the exchange will be jacked up in prices even more, and knock even more people into the "cannot afford the exchange policies" category.

This administration needs to be impeached...

Might as well face the facts that we are living under a single-payer system now.

It's just that the details need to be ironed out.

That's the conclusion reached in the article as well. that these companies are going to raise prices to offset the "loss".

We have a law that does not work... It has caused 5 million + to lose their insurance coverage, its pushed prices higher while have the effect of reduced services or refusal all together by Doctors.

and now this...

I come to 2 possible conclusions -
A - This administration really is this stupid and just does not understand what their job is under the Constitution.

B - This administrations goal is to destroy sectors of this country, forcing the people to rely on the government for more and more, and have no problem misleading / outright lying to the people to accomplish their goal.

This government doesn't need impeached.

The rats in D.C. need to be ran out of the country and we get back to the constitution.

I feel sorry for no one in this scenario.

The people voted this puppet into office, and everybody wants a free ride. They get what they deserve.

The insurance companies are all greedy b@$+@®ds, so they're getting what they deserve.

Sounds like fair play all around.

Barring a massive move of civil disobedience, ain't nothing gonna change.

you cannot fix a symbiotic relationship between govt, corporate and banker America. the entire system is a farce and can only collapse. look for more troubling times ahead since it will take the disintegration of our society to happen, before we have a chance of fixing anything and that includes health care among many others.

it may seem good to you and like justice served to these companies but forcing anyone or any entity like a business or medical facility to provide a service at a loss or disadvantage only creates a situation where said service becomes inadequate and the people requiring said service are more likely to be abused and neglected.

Impeachment would be a good start. Not to mention it is the only way to remove a politician from office before the end of their term. So if we wanted to run them out of the country, we'd have to impeach them first. Anything else would be illegal and put is in the same freedom destroying category as the people who "represent" us.

This is going to become very interesting to watch as a bystander.

Whatever people might say, although from personal experience, I believe single-payer system to be the most effective healthcare system, simply due to the inexistance of middle men (insurance companies). The current productivity loss of people, who are not able to pay for their healthcare, will cost the country billions in long-term. We must also not forget that US is already spending more on healthcare per capita than any other nation in the world. (I have never gotten exactly how it works, but it is true). Despite similar costs of living, other nations are able to spend 2-3 times less on healthcare, while everybody receives full coverage for their taxes and there are more doctors/more hospital spots per capta, while in US despite the high costs from government budget, still people have to pay extreme amounts. At least in my eyes, that shows how rigged and inflated the system is from the reality. The middlemen/corporations are driving the costs up and the losers are innocent people, who can not treat themselves due to too many people besides doctors and essential hospital staff wanting their share.

Whether you like to admit or not, compared to rest of the advanced nation, the healthcare system was a joke before the healthcare reform.

Seeing all the issues happening, it is very hard to predict what is going to happen in the near future. Single-payer system is one of the possibilities definitely, especially when seeing this particular move. I personally would not be surprised, if long-term the healthcare reform made during Obama administration will turn out positive and create a positive legacy for Obama.

People do not remember the beginning of different reforms in history, what matters is the final results. The system might extremely messed up for a couple, even three-four years, but if it starts working then and better than the previous one, it will be remembered as positive reform.

When being realistic, it is naive expecting such a large-scale reform to start working well immediately, especially considering the size of US. I have yet to hear of even smaller reforms in other much smaller countries than US, which started working well immediately. First months are always the worst, people panicking, media making it seem even worse, doomsayers doing their usual work, after some period , usually year-two, sometimes even more, it is possible to see that actual long-term results of the reforms and so far, the doomsayers have never been right, at least on the reforms I have personally witnessed and there are many

LOL

Forgive me if I dont shed any tears for the poor downtrodden insurance companies.
They provide nothing of use, basically they are just another way of making money for rich people who understand the system and have more resources to take advantage of it than most of us plebs.

My tin foil hat is on firmly forthis one but what if the plan is to screw this whole Obamacare thing up so much that Americans run back into the bosom of the insurance companies and never bring up the thought of socialised (or semi socialised) medicine ever again?

I really cant understand why you guys dont just have a system like Oz or the UK or Canada or even fricken Cuba!!!!

Actually I can understand, your lawmakers are whores and wouldnt get paid if it wasnt run by corporations

obubacare has been a mess since its conception, which actually seems to me to have taken a great deal of forethought.
What happens if you have a serious car accident, get cancer, or have a sudden heart attack and need bypass surgery?
Now, suddenly unable to work, you have to come up with a $7,000 to $13,000 deductible, then meet your co-pays!
Not too many working class folk have that kind of loose change lying around.
There is talk of government 'health care' loans, like student loans, that couldn't be defaulted on. Would not the government then be able to seize your home, and anything else of value, if you couldn't meet the debt due to life's misfortunes?
Wouldn't the government eventually end up owning just about everything and everyone?
People are clamoring for protests; a revolution....
Has it not occurred to anyone that maybe we are being backed into a corner to instigate such a massive reaction?
What a perfect reason to enact Marshal Law and confiscate every gun they can find!
Could the government actually turn on its own people, imprisoning and killing those that refuse to conform?
If we had any Native American ancestors alive today, we could ask them what they thought our future might be.....
What goes around, comes around.
