Icelanders forced their entire government to resign after a banking fraud scandal, overthrowing the ruling party and creating a citizen’s group tasked with writing a new constitution that offered a solution to prevent corporate greed from destroying the country. The constitution of Iceland was scrapped and is being rewritten by private citizens; using a crowd-sourcing technique via social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. These events have been going on since 2008, yet there’s been no word from the U.S. mainstream media about any of them. In fact, all of the events that unfolded were recorded by international journalists, overseas news bureaus, citizen journalists and bloggers. This has created current accusations of an intentional cover up of the story by mainstream U.S. news sources.

This seems to be a pretty big deal to me, and the first I've heard about it. Iceland's citizens have stood up to there government, are rewriting the constitution due to banking fraud. It makes one wonder, why have we not heard about it here?

Perhaps the bankers running the world are afraid fire will catch?

Here is the link for the full story.

I knew about them jailing the bankers who caused the 08 crashed in that country, but I didn't know that they overthrew their government and are actively trying to write a new Constitution. Hmmm... Maybe a change of scenery may be needed for me...

Did you read the first comment under the article?
You might want to look into this a bit deeper.

Just to be clear, this headline is highly misleading. The "overthrow" happened back in 2008; the rewrite of the constitution never eventuated and Iceland never joined the EU. In fact, Iceland has since had yet another election and voted out the left-wing parties and replaced them with right-wing parties again, who immediately removed anything to do with rewriting the constitution, including socialising natural resources, cancelled talks with the EU, and put the country almost exactly back in the same political position it was pre-economic collapse.

Indeed I may have jumped the gun....all apologies if so. When I get a chance I'll revise as needed.

I don't know about all media, but I've covered parts of this with threads myself over the past couple years, and that came from media as the starting point. Others have posted a lot more..

If we look at what's been happening to maintain American citizens in a non-stop state of crisis, with one leading into another? It's no wonder we don't get a lot of coverage on things which..at other times? Might dominate headlines for awhile.

We're supposed to be focusing on our own ruin and how bad we feel about our nation...not how others find ways to solve it. I don't know about suppression of news tho..they just have to say Iceland is full of idiots and don't know better. Half our population will obediently nod their heads, decide that must be so, and forget about it to return to their TV shows.

Any grassroot movement is much easier to organise in a country like Iceland as it has a relatively small population, a few hundred thousand I think.

In smaller populations there is going to be less of a divide between the wealthy and poor and you will only be a degree or 2 away from everyone else in the country.
This makes MSM propaganda almost impossible, you cant fudge the results of polls and surveys when the average citizen has access to the thoughts of a decent sample size of the population.

Lets just hope it doesnt all go backwards

GO ICELAND!!!!!!

How sad eh? It just goes to show that when greed is entrenched, they will just bide their time until they seize power again. And here I thought they were really rebuilding afresh. Anyone know when their next election is?

This is old news.

The interesting thing that happened as a result of Iceland's "overthrow" was the creation of protections for journalists.

I think they worked with Assange and took all the best laws from around the world to create a safe haven.

Here's a story: www.theguardian.com...

To me that's the most significant thing to come out of it.

No huge mystery here. The msm are owned and operated by the same corporations that own and operate our government and they like it. They're the last source id expect to allow information like this out. I say fantastic idea Icelanders! We should learn from their example.

from a June 2012 blog story that referred to Iceland in 2008.....

..........
Pressure from Icelandic citizens’ has managed not only to bring down a government, but also begin the drafting of a new constitution (in process) and is seeking to put in jail those bankers responsible for the financial crisis in the country. As the saying goes, if you ask for things politely it is much easier to get them.

This quiet revolutionary process has its origins in 2008 when the Icelandic government decided to nationalise the three largest banks, Landsbanki, Kaupthing and Glitnir, whose clients were mainly British, and North and South American.

After the State took over, the official currency (krona) plummeted and the stock market suspended its activity after a 76% collapse. Iceland was becoming bankrupt and to save the situation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) injected U.S. $ 2,100 million and the Nordic countries helped with another 2,500 million.

Here's another thread...

story from Business Insider
July 12, 2012

Article..

The gentleman's name is Ólafur Þór (Thor) Hauksson. He is an ex police lieutenant hired by the government of Iceland to investigate all who were involved in the banking scandals and financial collapse there.

Apparently he was hired several years ago, and so far has actually netted some convictions !!

He has a "posse" of 100 the story says !!

Interesting article ..........

I read about this story yesterday but could find no news outlets reporting on it, including Iceland. The only sites that were reporting it were message forums, blogs, and beforeitsnews.com.

So I dunno what to do with this.

Edit: I see, this is an old story from 08.

I have heard of this before, thanks for posting the article again. I think that it was a better idea to hold the Iceland government and bankers accountable than it was in the U.S. to reward the bankers and the government.

The source of the problem is corruption, so while in Iceland, the corruption has been weeded out, in the U.S. the weeds were fed more fertilizer.

It seems to me like we will probably have another economic crisis at some point and this time the bail out option won't be so politically favorable.

Although progress of this sort will probably be painful.
