Loneliness that penetrates the soul,
like a chilling morning fog that shrouds
the panorama of life and joy
until we cry out in anguish.

We feel the bite of shame,
for surely we are to blame.
Once our numbness is overcome,
all our doubts shout our names.

Hiding behind our plethora of masks,
one for each day,
different but all the same,
frozen, they don’t truly smile.

Life stages we act upon,
fearful of the edge that we might fall from.
Scared we might forget our lines,
we seek to hear our prompter’s voice.

Great quotes and anecdotes,
we pray for just the right words to say.
Our greatest outcome and expectation,
to feel accepted without reservation.

We are poorly equipped to sustain
relationship that’s not a game.
Even unclothed,
we are still not naked.

How many clever devices
hide our many vices?
So many of our desires are on a burning garbage pile,
hidden now in life’s dark alleys.

Our hearts burn on that pile,
broken, twisted and reviled,
love poured out,
written and compiled.

Some will read and understand,
others will be glad they are not this foolish man,
so bold to imagine he speaks for others,
no wonder he is so alone.

no wonder he is so alone.

It is by design one can say

I read your words and it clicks,

Ahh Its thats time of day,

Off to bed for me

sleep needed to certain degree

I will return with a message of love

until then I soar above all as a dove.

In my dreams where above is below

Be prepared for one hell of a show

Never really go into the short story section, found this through recent posts and thought, I know loneliness so I will take a peak.

for surely we are to blame.

I am.

fearful of the edge that we might fall from.

I wish I was more fearful so as to not get so close to the edge where I am now to blame for who and what fell off because of my actions and choices.

Some will read and understand Others will be glad they are not this foolish man,

I am a foolish man but I read and do understand,

or at least I understand my own interpretation of your words.

Do you know why he is alone, is it by design?

Is he alone by his own design or are other factors/influences involved?

I KNOW loneliness!

It is that which I have that I don't want.

It is the lack of something. It is a void that yearns to be filled.

I hardly ever get to chat with anyone. I live in a rural place on my own. Sometimes days go by and I see no human face and have no human contact other than online.

I am still on the quest for a special companionship. I know they can happen in life.

Nice verse! Good luck!

Thank you for the video!

The three ways I deal with my own loneliness:

#1. Humor is my most significant way for dealing with loneliness

#2. Doing something nice for someone else

#3. Not being afraid to talk about it.

That's amazing. I do exactly that, too. I think they are the very best coping mechanisms.

When I am in silly moods I have a whole array of characters who I set in motion. It is like my own comedy sketch. They all have different accents and certain character traits. It would not be funny to anyone else because I have had this thing running for years and it is all retort based humour.

I have given up on TV. I was without a TV for quite a few years and then last year I got one and gave it a year, but I prefer the interactivity of being online.

Every prayer that you bump into a special somebody (if that would ease the loneliness blues).

I have good days where I feel all the positive aspects. I don't have to please anyone else and am free to not have to limit myself by relating to another's reality. However, that gets boring!

I just keep myself living in hope that I will get to share experiences with some nice people, at least once in a while. Mean time, it's just make use of the resources available. Work with what is one's power.

Thank you for taking the time to read my poem. Loneliness is at the heart of every human being. Our response to it can take many forms, from denial to addiction. For some it is like a facial blemish that we wished weren't there and we attempt to cover it up or have it removed. I look in the mirror and I see a nose I have had all my life and if I look at it and take ownership I like what I see. However, If I look at my profile from the side it looks misshapen. I try to look at my loneliness in the same way. When I look at it head on I see it just as part of me, but certainly not all of me.

One of my ways of staying connected with people is to stay here on ATS, especially in the short stories forum. I have found a group of people here who I call friends. I hope you will find this forum a comfortable place and find new friends as well. I hope you will consider me one.

Thank you! I wish the same for you.

ATS is a great place to feel some connection. I am lucky because I do like the general way U.S people think and they are all great company for me. I don't socialise on here other than through the forums in posts. I consider everyone a member of the same online club who one must approach with core respect. My attitude is that everyone is a friend until they reveal themselves to be otherwise.

I have come to very much care about U.S people (and all people of the world) and my motives here on ATS are very much to be a friend and to show my care, support and interest.

You are very much counted as a friend. Your poetry is good to read and I hope you will continue sharing it as well as all your thoughts.

I believe loneliness is a human condition. Whether we admit it or deny it, it always lurks in the back of our minds. Some will feel it is their fault because of things they have done or not done. Some will blame others. The truth is we all long for love and relationship whether it is with other people or with their god. How we pursue that fulfillment often creates behavior that becomes negative and harmful to ourselves and others.
As another human being the greatest gift I can give you is my friendship.

And I believe that it is your soul which came to the point where needs to be lonely to feel, to acknowledge loneliness and to evolve to appreciate yourself as you are and to appreciate even the slightest interaction with fellow beings. Some will say that it is in our nature that we have the need to socialize, some will say that without one another we cannot survive and other say that we are all one and because of it we miss connection with the other self. Well they are all correct=)

But as I have said, I believe loneliness is given to you, your life at some point, to learn about yourself, your feelings, your spirit. Once you find answers, accept it, evolve, you will be given plenty of interaction with others.

Look at the loneliness as positive thing that gives you time to discover things you may not be aware of. Don`t struggle with yourself when in silly mood, just accept it. Go for a longer walk, clear your mind and in the meantime make plans that make you happy. I know the feeling gets intense when one`s mind is not occupied. But once you`ll be ready you`ll be okay and people will come in to your life if they are not already there and perhaps you just not see them...

Look for signs everywhere and take time to interpret them and even to consider them as signs in the first place...You say you live in far away from others? Did you ever considered having a pet? That`s a good thing to have your mind and heart occupied=)

Thanks for the reply.

Don't worry about me, I'm my own worst enemy in many ways.

It would not be fair for me to have a dog or anything like that. I live so much in my own mind and thoughts. Always have been like that. Being bi polar, too, is a drawback in relationships. I am very intense at times. It would take quite a free spirit to understand where I am coming from.

With the bi polar thing, it is a price worth paying. Some of the creative and mind expanding experiences I have are quite amazing. They are like breakthroughs in the psyche. I have been alone a long time and as you can see I am very much involved in a relationship with myself to counter loneliness.

I think I need to meet somebody else who is bi polar may be? That does happen with people often.

I am just happy that I have a bright, enthusiastic, enquiring and adventurous mind. I have coupled that with a caring disposition towards others. I do like what I have become, but it is a bit off the beaten track. Hopefully someday I can find someone else who will may be appreciate that. Just that right now most people are more interested in conformity and behaving in a very narrowly defined way. Perhaps that is necessary for most people. They live in a world of certain expectations of how they present themselves and bring up their children.

I never had children so there was never any real need to conform. It makes life lonelier though; without children and being very individualistic. I'd give it all up for normality and my own family, but my mind and nature have sent me in this direction.

To say one is an ARTIST is always a great excuse for a non-conformist or eccentric person to hide behind. I hide behind that.

This might sound silly to you, but in my world there is no such thing as bi-polar disorder, because then I would have one too, being a gemini. And I too was/or still am at times my own enemy, being a perfectionist and therefore too critical to myself and didn`t want accept that. My mood to was like my zodiac sign, like I had this evil twin who is trying to take control of the good twin and the mood could change unexpected. Still do have this inner fights at times...Anyway I was looking at this from the wrong perspective. Now I know this is one of the reasons I came here to earth to go through this state and find a solution/accept it.

And people you say, that are "interested in conformity and behaving in a very narrowly defined way" are(their souls) already have or are yet to experience loneliness, maybe not even in previous/this lifetime. When you`ll evolve, you will be able to tell which soul had already been through this and you will sense and know this in people. Just give em a chance, but first...(You said that it would be unfair for you to have a pet. I mean cmon, really?)...you need to give a chance to yourself. You ll be surprised. Just don`t give up on yourself, because that was what I kept doing...it takes time before you start seeing progress...And also you`ll be surprised how positively people will accept you as you as long as they won`t have a feeling that you are keep hiding something or not being honest, which is also very common thing to happen when struggling=)

This may also sound silly, but many supposed mental illnesses are not really researched enough and were in the past described as spells sent by demons or gods, even possesions. Now the mainstream doctors would tell you otherwise, but the reality is that they simply don`t know what the cause is to develop such illness and why it is keep coming and how to treat the cause of it. The medications may suppress the activity but it really won`t heal you from it. You have to accept that you are on the spiritual path, and Im not saying that you should stop taking meds, but maybe change perception on the thing for a start.

Anyway its your path you`re on you ll have to find answers for yourself. Just remember, there is always a solution to everything, so if in silly mood(may it feel impossible to get out of), dont resist, stay positive and let it pass by occupying your mind with something(cleaning dishes for ex), then when you come back from this "agony or bombarment of thoughts and feelings" try to find answers on what happened and why...and it`s always in details...and above all be positive and have (i would say but I see you already have that "Hope") =)

You are never alone when you are amongst friends...
Change must be in the wind for many these days. We must learn to glide and let the wind carry us where it may before we can learn to soar at the heights of an eagle- we must begin again. Take heart friend, we have an ear to listen.

I know what you mean. As scary as it can be sometimes, it is also exhilarating. I find myself more comfortable with knowing I exist regardless of how others see me. I no longer find my substance in what others say I am. More and more I am liking what I am and what I am becoming. I am becoming freer and freer to just be me. I too use to hide behind "artist" and other titles and often talked of myself in a self deprecating way.

The wind is blowing and there is change coming.
