I don't define anything or need to label
anything, except when I talk about things on ATS or in RL.

Don't need labels...

No labels except when you talk, here or anywhere else...ok.

I've studied this subject to near absurd levels.. there is no more
evidence, in fact possibly less evidence that jesus existed
than even Abraham.

How can you be so delightfully accurate about Abraham but
not apply that same clear thinking to jesus?

Now were there various apocalyptic prophets around that time?
Yes. Now was yeshua a common name (rather like bob or fred)?
Yes. But did anyone outside of the Christian movement write
about yesuha? I know there are 2 commonly discussed references.
One was demonstrated to be a lie and the other one apparently
did refer to some yeshua, related to John the Baptist who
definitely did exist.

But look at this way..

If in our day and time even one miracle could be proven, the
whole world would be electrified. There would be zero doubt.

But an open-hearted, open-minded person who WANTED to
believe, can research the 'miracles of Jesus' and wind up
not finding enough evidence that jesus even existed, to even
consider it 1% possible; let alone any of the miracles.

I studied Christian apologiests and textual criticism and for
decades and WANTED to believe.. some form of it anyway..
but no go. There is no rational or even irrational basis.

I know lots of people would want to disagree about this..
but I'm not going there.. there is too much self-interest
involved to be neutral, by the people who so badly
want to believe. I'm not going to go roundy roundy
for no reason... I spent decades doing that with some
really fine minds.

What's your take on this FF? I respect your opinion.

I do not experience anger. This rant is an optional
passion I can feel or not feel depending on what set
of 'clothing I feel like wearing'.

As far as others being able to perceive god without
his permission -- can't happen by definition.

And as the old Christians said, "god is the hidden god'.
It's true that.

If 'god exists' then god is like the sun.. no man or woman
can stand before this 'unfiltered god' without melting
to nonexistence. The OT has this concept all over it.

So thanks for your response. It allowed me to say
these things, which are useful.

To say you dont experience anger is to say you are not human.
Anger is a human emotion that ALL humans feel.
Now denying that emotion in yourself is another thing altogether.
Choosing not to be angry would require the anger in the first place.

Forcing beliefs onto others is my pet peeve.

People can tell you what they believe and why and what they feel and why...they CANNOT force their belief on others.

Hmmmmm....you sound a little obsessive about it.

A great and wise observation. People feel something strongly, they share, they wish to express that strong belief or feeling to others...Others can listen or walk away. This is truth on any subject.

Truth also being that every person will speak of the things they personally feel and believe whenever they get the opportunity.

An obvious joke.

I don't believe god exists. Could god exist? Maybe. We don't know.

Hummm I have aways wondered what the text meant by lines like...Rev 3:16

16 So, because you are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth!

If 'god' appeared to me and smote me, I couldn't possibly regard
that any differently than a cat pooping in a litter box.

Really?
Well your tone seems to show anger.

but there are a few things in there still rattling around
that rises to the level of pissing me off,

Here's the thing that I realized as a very young child about this whole
'god thing':

I trot out anger once in a while when it serves a function.

But don't presume to speak for who I am or am not.
That's the primary error discussed multiple times
in this thread.

By the way, the function of this thread was accomplished
so I'm discontinuing tracking of it.

Have a pleasant day!

I don't see it that way, I know my children don't believe as I do, in fact as each other even.

What should they just sit back say nothing and let you grow? I guess a severely retarded parent would be perfect.

People grow up, we all are being fed what our parents believe and feel (what else do they have to offer), they are giving us what they believe.

That is not forcing anything, unless of course you still live at home and never grow up or question your parents beliefs.

Religious trolling?
I dont understand what the function of this thread was, just a pointless rant?.
Its only good manners to participate in a thread which you yourself started.
For someone that doesnt get angry, it certainly doesnt SEEM that way.
I dont presume anything of you, I can only interpret what you are trying to say from your own words.
I was merely stating human nature, of which we are all victims.

So.... are you a satanist?

Rikku
a pick'n'mix christian.
you are the worst.

Worst, eh?

Those Christians who take the entire bible literally have missed the point.
Do you really think God is going to send people to hell because they 'pull out early' during sex?
The bible says He will. (onanism).
Do you really think God is going to send people to hell for eating shellfish or bacon?
The bible says He will.
Do you really think God wrote the ten commandments on blocks of stone for Moses?
He didn't. Here's the information
Do you really think Abraham was sane (or even existed)??
Information shows he probably didn't exist, or if he did, the folklore surrounding him is unreliable
Do you really think the Jews were slaves in Egypt and 2 million of them left and lived in the desert for 40 years? Archeologists and historians and sociologists now conclude that it never happened.
Do you really think God would make 4% of the population homosexual and then tell them that, because He made them born that way, they are all going to hell? Really? That'd be a sucky sucky God.

All those things are IRRELEVANT to salvation. If people want to believe in the old testament folklore and mythology as literal, that's their choice, of course. But the truth of the matter is that the ONLY thing relevant to salvation and to being 'Christian' are the teachings of Jesus.

So which is really 'among the worst' ....

Trying to follow Jesus teaching of the greater two commandments of love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbor as yourself' .... or ..... condemning people to hell for eating shellfish and for being born homosexual and for using birth control (pullingout), etc etc (that second bunch is what you are doing when you don't use common sense when reading scripture).

His deciples went out and spread the word. They did not tell others that they were going to hell if they did not follow their teachings. That is how I read it in the bible anyway.

Jesus also says that only one in the family had to be saved for the whole family to be saved.

You do realize that this entire thread is "obsessing about God" right?

Kidding. In all seriousness, I hear you. I agree that religions have their ignorant followers, and they're quite annoying. Especially when they think they have the fortitude to lecture you about life and God when they themselves know literally NOTHING about it, other than what was dictated to them by their families and churches.

Also, though, the same argument can be made about a lot of non-believers. See, this "obsessing about God" thing has quite a double standard wrapped around it, because whenever non-believers ridicule believers, call them names, and suggest they're insane and stupid, its all fine and dandy. But when believers do the same thing--or try to convert folks, even without the ridicule and name calling--they're hung high for it and hated.

It really isn't fair, because non-believers seem to get all the sympathy in this dumb little social war. And while they claim to be "lovers of science and logic," they can't disprove God, no science can disprove God. So, they, logically, are no more right than believers are.

I myself am a nondemoninational believer (meaning I DO believe in a higher power based upon my personal spiritual experiences and beliefs, but I very much DO NOT believe in organized religion). I like to think I'm outside of this little "Christian vs Atheist" war.

Its just another thing to keep us squabbling with each other while the powers take over.
