I generally don't bother feeling things like this any more,
but there are a few things in there still rattling around
that rises to the level of pissing me off, that I dust off
and feel sometimes.

I'm not pissed off AT 'god'. I never have been. I neither
believe nor disbelieve in 'god'. It would be pointless to
do either one, as there is no way to verify the belief.

Now if people wish to have a god or 'God' in their
intellectual or emotional reference system, I'm
ok with that. If people want to 'pray to 'god'' and
to study exotic systems which include a god or
gods; that's fine with me. It seems a bit intellectually
lazy to do that, but hey, some people want to skip
logical steps and not do all their homework; that's
their privilege.

I in fact see a lot of evidence for a 'field responsive
to consciousness' or perhaps even that 'consciousness
is supreme' and that matter and energy are in fact
emergent properties of consciousness and not the
other way around.

So I'm not hostile to the concept of 'god'.

What always got me pissed off, were the lame ass,
sick minded, ways that people invent a 'god concept'
and then use that 'god concept' to visit evil on their
fellow man.

To invent a 'god' whose main occupation seems to be
damning to eternal hell anyone who doesn't agree
with your personal concept of 'god' does to this
day piss me the f* off.

Here we are, little ape creatures with barely enough
intellect to not destroy ourselves, one little dot on
one little dot in an infinite or near infinite universe,
and presumably 'god' is upset if I don't grovel before
him on Thursday rather than Wednesday, and whether
I boil a kid in it's mother's milk (one of the 'commandments
given to moses by 'god' ')

What sick perverted mind thinks up this stuff? And what's
alarming to me, is that this sick perverted evil has spread
to more than half of the human population, and that being
predestined to be damned before the beginning of the
world before they had done good or evil (Isaiah) is considered
to be a rational and accurate representation of the behavior
of the architect of infinite universes -- who is fine with letting
millions of babies die in agony of AIDS, but who damns to
hell for any minor infraction of a ridiculous bronze age
code of conduct.

Here's the thing that I realized as a very young child about this whole
'god thing':

[SNIP]

If God is a kind, loving sort, then it really doesn't matter what
any of us do. But then again, there is no way to know whether
or not God is a kind and loving sort, unless God chooses to
reveal himself.

God has never revealed himself. I know lots say that he has;
but if he has revealed himself, and it's important that we
all acknowledge that he has --- then he has failed utterly
and thus could not be God at all.

In short, since it's by definition IMPOSSIBLE to know whether
'god' exists or not (could just be a powerful being faking
being 'god'),

and it's by definition IMPOSSIBLE to know whether 'god' is
being truthful or not (who says that 'god' has to follow
human standards of honesty) --- because by definition
'god' would be an all powerful and perfect LIAR,

there is NO POINT WHATSOEVER in obsessing about 'god'.

Either 'god' exists or He doesn't.
Either he's a lying asshole or he isn't.
But by DEFINITION it's impossible to know.

But in any and all cases, there is NOTHING TO BE GAINED
by believing one small human's version over another
small human's version and thinking any of it has
ANY TINY bit of merit.

It's pointless.

In my mind, if 'god' exists, then the people who obsess
about him and who torment others with their lame ass
and intellectually lazy and hateful god concept, are
the ones who'd make 'god' go cluck cluck and keep
sending them back to school, until they give up their
lame ass lazy and indefensible obsession with something
they can't possibly know anything about.

And as I'm a loving creature, for whatever reason, I'd
volunteer to come here and keep saying this stuff
until those tormented and conflicted ape creatures
got over themselves and their stanky and pointless
and invalid no basis 'god concept' that does no good
and only exists to control them and hurt others.

I myself 'choose to be a good guy' because I WANT
to be a 'good guy'; not because I believe some
sick psychos version of what 'god is' when they
couldn't possible know or speak for 'god'.

There!

That felt a little good.

"I neither believe nor disbelieve in God" is like saying "I neither breathe nor don't breathe." You don't believe in God, period.

Ok.. fair enough.

Here's what I meant;

It's fine with me if 'god' exists.
It's fine with me if 'god' does not exist.
It's above my pay grade.

Good for you wanting to do good for the sake of good though. If only everyone had that mentality regardless of faith or creed.

Great rant and one I agree with.
It is the higher than thou attitude the people who follow religion what I can't stand, they try to look down on others who arn't in their club with fake pity and the message of "Join us and you will goto heaven". Pfft.
I believe in God and I know Iam a decent sort who does stuff for others because as you said it feels right but for others to say I will burn in Hell because Iam not in their club? GTFO!!!.
Remember God would not have a religion...religion is a man made construct..one which will die off as we evolve spiritually.
I agree no one has seen God, only the mentally unwell will claim to have seen him, it is a construct of the mind.
I think God just made the rules of the universe, rolled the dice and is having a right good chortle to himself/herself/it.
I loved your we are just little Apes bit

Take a deep breath and focus on what you can control....ignore the things that you don't subscribe to...if you see something in the news about god, turn it off. If you see a post here on ATS about god, ignore it...

As far as Christmas goes, the bulk of the people that celebrate Christmas make no connection to Jesus or a higher being...much like them I enjoy the beautiful decorations and people acting just a little bit more kind...my kids love the lights and the fact that my family gets together without being petty is also a bonus..

I find it amazing that so many cultures are based on some religious base...I personally think that we inherently come up with religion as a guide for those to dumb to do the right thing...and I'm ok with that...

Many on here believe in big foot, ghosts, aliens, multiple dimensions and other paranormal stuff but scoff at a god...I have yet to witness any.

Live and let live...

There is nothing wrong with a little humility and stating that you do not know...

It takes a special kind of arrogance to tell someone else what they belief.

You hit the nail on the head with this one my friend. The insanity tolerated of Christians, Jews and Islamic faiths is far above what i and any other reasonable human I've come across consider acceptable. Even ats has been overrun with them the past year or two. Pisses me off too my friend. pretty much all that pisses me off actually.

Nice rant. I myself often wonder at how the OT god in particular is portrayed. The biggest red flag to me is his self-identification as a god, above all else. Why? Because when you're a god, even kings bow to you. I don't think it has to be spelled out any further than that.
If there was anyone that the OT god was inspired by, I think it had to have been a technologically advanced extra-terrestrial taking advantage of everyone, peppering the puppet master power trips with 'miracles' and favoritism to keep people from catching on to him as being a creation just like them.

More than half of the world wants me to suffer for all eternity
in a custom torture chamber that they have constructed.
That's worse than wishing me dead.

Why is this acceptable?

I'm sure there are serial killers out there that want to kill and
eat me or something like that.. but what the religious people
want to do to me is far more pervasive and far more evil.

Why do you recommend live and let live?

If a serial killer were outside of your door, I'd let you know
if I could!

** there almost certainly is a serial torturer wannabee
very close to your house! Watch out! **

You are taking this way too far....half the world does not want you to suffer nor should they care. Some of the "god bashers" on here stretch the truth and make it appear as though they have Christians knocking down their door trying to make them convert.

I have yet to have the topic of god mentioned at a job that I have been at for over twenty years..I have never had someone come up to me and follow me until I convert.

This is certainly an easy subject for people to get all up in a tizzy about..I'm a Christian and I could care less if you believe or not...not up to me. You can call me a bad Christian but then I would say who are you to judge me...you don't believe in God.

Again just take a deep breath...I've noticed many on here that make it a full time job to bash religion (judging by their posts) and seems just as bad to go out of your way to try and sway people as it is for Christians to go out of their way to try and sway you...those people bashing the religion are no better than those pushing it on others..

Lets just enjoy the time we have here while our hearts are still beating..

The abuser can easily tell the victim to settle down.

You do NOT have the moral high-ground here.

And your arrogance is your high ground? Get over yourself because nobody cares whether or not you subscribe to religion..you are making this post more than it needs to be...have a smoke and a drink and build your bomb shelter because the world is not going to change for you...either adapt or check out early..

Thought I would take the moral low ground, just like you...

I have no arrogance regarding this matter.
You have no idea who I am and you can't speak for me.
Just like you can't justifiably think you can speak for me
about 'god' or 'my soul' or anything like that. And you
can't speak for 'god' either. You are in fact proving
the central point of my post. Thanks for that.

Have a nice day.

I never read of Jesus aggressively pushing religion. He just walked around healing people and spreading good will. I guess they improved on his method after he died. It has got a lot better than before though, at least we have a right to freedom of religion in this country. We could still be forced to believe in god or die like they used to do.

I believe in god but I do not push my beliefs on others. I have no clue what god is, some sort of consciousness I suppose. I really don't care, I like to believe something truthful and good exists, I won't find that believing in society. I do not see that in science either.

I've said this many times; some of the words attributed to Jesus
are inspiring. And some of the example of Jesus is inspiring.

Ghandi, one of the greatest men in recent times said this

Now, despite the fact I can't find people who wish me to burn
in hell likeable, I do care about their welfare. I do love them.

That is false dichotomy, one can disbelieve without closing the door to a chance that it is a possibility. In fact what he said can be translated to "I do not know".

Not knowing (and the danger of the unknown) is the basic position of anyone facing something for the first time. In fact one of my pet peeves against most (some do not incur in this problem) mainstream religions is that the manual came so late in the game that it can't simply be relevant and at best is a collage (most is plagiarised) and is not even the result of a very creative writer. That those works have become so outdated that they needed many revisions or have been cherry picked for effect should be a clue to the issues behind them.

I do believe in God, I'm a pantheist. In the midst of a chaotic reality I can see an emergent order where entropy should be ruler. My faith is in the order I see around me and that I feel part of, it can be resumed to the idea that I hope my transitive existence has any meaning or contributes anything to the global picture.

Well that one sentence has generated a lot of commentary!

As a matter of fact, in my view there is a mass distributed
intelligence from which everything flows.. mostly by
evolution I'd say..

But that's not the point.

The point is I do not KNOW.

Now I know that various people will find it very obnoxious
for me to say this.. but I've had a number of people in
my life say that I must be some advanced holy man
who 'knows all these things'.

But I never accept that characterization.

When I talk to my close friends I'll even speak about the
layer of consciousness that a Kabbalahist might call the
'body of Adam Kadmon - pre calamity'. Per that system
that layer is 1 or 2 layers 'below God'. Depends on how
you spin it.

But that doesn't mean I have ANY RIGHT - (I don't) to
pontificate about 'god'.

That is obnoxious in the extreme. Not one religious
person in the world, not one spiritual person in the
world, not even friggin Buddha should he come back,
has even 1% right to pontificate about 'god'.

Anyone's wild and unfounded speculations about 'god'
have the exact same foundational relevance --- none.

Groovy. Us Atheists will do that.

Now can you go and tell all those god damned annoying religious people to do the same? You know, stop getting in peoples faces when they're in hospital, or determining that they like the same sex, or want to work on sunday, or want to have a beer on sunday even...

All those christians that made the stupid rules, STILL get to say what us atheists do... they're in our faces blathering on about god and jesus and trying to save us. It's really annoying, you know.

I'd be happy to let hippys sit in a commune and rally each other to hug whales and so on.. but if they came near me with incense sticks and carrot juice telling me I'm not going to nirvana man, then I'd likely have a cricket bat with their name on it too. So it's not just the goody two shoes with crosses that annoy me.

I'm an equal opportunity bastard...
