Roy Harper faces child sex charges

Folk singer Roy Harper is to stand trial next year over allegations he committed a string of sex offences in the Hertfordshire area in the mid 1970s.

The 72-year-old performer of Rossmore, near Clonakilty, Co Cork, in the Republic of Ireland, faces nine charges, including two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl aged under 13. There are also three charges of indecent assault and four of gross indecency against the same alleged victim.

Now, for those of you who are going, "Roy Harper?? Who he??" this:

- He was a well-known English folk singer of the 60s/70s

- He was friends with many influential people in the music business of the time, including Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd

- He was famously name-dropped by Led Zeppelin on their 'Led Zeppelin III' album of 1970 ('Hats off to (Roy) Harper')

- Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page featured on two of Harper's albums, 'Stormcock' (1971) and 'Whatever Happened To Jugula' (1985)

- He famously sang lead vocal on the track 'Have A Cigar' from Pink Floyd's 1976 album 'Wish You Were Here'

How long before the UK police start reining in the really big names from the world of 70s rock (a period infamous for its tales of sexual, drug-fuelled debauchery)?

I would be more interested in how long before the UK police start reining in the really big names from our recent and current government and judicial system who are still participating in a life style of sexual drug-fuelled debauchery. The police know who they are but the top brass is shelving the evidence.

They are reigning in the entertainers as the sacrificial anodes to appease the public. What about the politicians, there must be some of them now and in past who are pedos.

Well, they're the untouchables of course.

But I bet there's a few twitching sphincter muscles out there...

That seems the sad reality but they shouldn't be. They should be squeaky clean so they cannot be blackmailed in their positions of extreme power.

You can bet it's in the USA, also - The question is - why do they wait until they're realllly old, and just about to die?

These things need to go to the current bunch of pedophiles that are still "in charge".

This sort of thing turns my stomach...

I mean, to me I cannot think of something more abhorrent than what these people did or do. Seriously it just strikes me as the most appalling 'secret' you can harbour and one that should fill someone's soul with shame and guilt.

Yet the more we hear about it, the more it appears it was a club. A god damned club where these people looked out for each other. They secreted children into each others homes and places of work and the more disgusting of them, paraded them on national public television, all the while knowing that they were evil sick scum, but smiling about it.

I just cannot even put my mind into that sort of mindset and not feel instant nausea.

It's like Rosemary's Baby in reality... the sick freaks are all around you and only when you look, do you see how little you can do about it.. token arrests do nothing. like picking off guards at the castle, you never get inside where the real targets hide.

You are correct CM. I ask, those that have Fav bands, singers and musicians - who will be 'agast' in later years when 'their' favourite idols are accused of this. Its still happening. Just look at the young kids today. Regardless of age they will follow their idols. Sure, the singers, band members, roadies etc should have more responsibility. So should the parents. Today and in the past.

I can't condone the behaviour, but of 'who?' My feelings are that more than 2 individuals are involved inclusive of upbringing, trust, law and education. This is accorded to both parties in any allegation.

The value of the word "No" from both sides without argument leads to the extremes of this morality.

I say "No" nowadays but get accused of being over the top and need to give a longwinded explanation of why. And this generally leads to a domestic incident where I have to give reasons that aren't supported, and when my young daughter asks to go and visit 'x' band and I say 'No' and and she loses it I'll show her this thread because all parties will be affected inclusive of me and my partner as parents. And the parents of the alleged peddo.

I think 'rights' for kids and adults could be looked at. Why, because,, If you're a kid and you don't agree with your parents decision to say "No" then do it anyway. Who's to blame??? I say at this juncture, as a parent, regardless of the accused I would have guilt.

Basically, you want to stop this then let me, as a parent, say "No" until the child is an adult.

Classic deflection tactics.

I don't want to sound if I'm excusing or condoning what these people have done but it seems to me they are offering up a few doddery old men as sacrificial lambs in an effort to distract attention away from something else.

Still, anyone can tell a 13 year old is under the age of consent - the scumbag deserves all he get's.
I have no sympathy for any nonce.

He hasn't been convicted of anything yet, and might be totally innocent.

Let's not jump the gun here.

Michael Le Vell of Coronation Street was recently acquitted of the same sort of allegations.

Quite true - I stand corrected, innocent until proven guilty is a cornerstone of our judicial system, and rightly so.

I think that with all the celebs being called for this kind of thing, it won't be long before one of them grasses on some high up politicians.

No-one is untouchable.

I'm Sure the Stones, The remaining Beatles, Zeppelin, Aerosmith et al.will be thinking back to the good old days and kinda wondering where this will all end...I suppose their defence Could be....it was the 60's and 70's man....I dont remember any of it.

Motely Crue have openly Admitted to locking a girl in a cupboard for days and only bringing her out for Sex.

That's just how Rock and Roll was back then...

One Groupie, cant remember her name, wrote a autobiography about her time Shagging as many Rock stars as she could get her hands on when she was 12/13... Jimmy Page was Knocking it into her back in the day.

The majority, if not all, have been O.A.P.'s approaching the end of their lives, or actually dead.
DLT, Stuart Hall, Rolf Harris - hardly makers and shakers of the world.
Convenient sacrificial lambs whilst those with the real power and influence carry on free from the danger of exposure.

.....it won't be long before one of them grasses on some high up politicians.

I'd be amazed that if they know of anything involving senior politicians / Civil Servants etc that they haven't already tried to grass on them - how far that would go is very much open for debate.

No-one is untouchable.

Really?
Do you honestly believe that if a member of royalty, senior 'nobility', current or ex-Cabinet Minister, senior clergy and judiciary or high ranking civil servant was implicated this would come into the public domain and result in prosecution?

Freeborn is absolutely right. There are royals and judges and ex Prime Minsters and high-ranking figures who have all engaged in these sordid acts, but does anything get done? No it doesn't.
All you get is aging presenters and rock stars offered up for sacrifice.

If people knew the level of abuse out there and just who was doing it, there would be riots in the streets, and I don't mean pissy little Tottenham, Mark Duggan riots, I mean burning down palaces and overthrowing the government riots.

But sadly that is exactly WHY this will never come out.

I started reading a book about Led Zepellin and in it, it alluded to the fact that Jimmy Page would only go after 14 year olds. I stopped reading it when I found this out, it really made me sick.

I guess all these guys from the 70's were part of a club, but it stretches far wider than celebrities. Politicians, business men and some top police officers have been linked to these terrible acts.

It appears they are willing to sacrifice some celebrities in order to protect the truth from ever being fully exposed.

Most of the BIg BIg names from that time all live in the USA now, or in a land of paradise somewhere.
I'm sure some keep up appearences and come back here now and then but I'm sure most no longer reside here, probably Tax reasons more than anything.
Be Interested if certain guys no longer come back.

The insanely rich run out of normal goals/things to buy and often delve into darker obsessions.

What does a twisted person who has everything buy? Using their wealth for good was never the plan. They were warped twists before attaining wealth but being poor left them with fewer opportunities to completely run amok without getting caught.

Loads of cash offers protection. Lots of sell outs won't say a word in favor of lining their pockets. Think Elvis/Michael Jackson...they do what they want.

It's a whole network. There's the rich pedo at the top and a community of underlings who make money off them/protect them.

It's sickening/disgusting. On that note Pete Townsend is worth a mention, that POS.

Townshend Avoids Kiddie Porn Charge

The musician acknowledged using his credit card to enter a Web site advertising child pornography but said he was doing research for his autobiography.

"I am not a pedophile," Townshend said at the time of his arrest.

The title character in Townshend's rock opera "Tommy" — a deaf, dumb and blind pinball wizard — is sexually abused by an uncle, and Townshend said he believed he was sexually abused as a young boy while in the care of his mentally ill grandmother.

Police said it was not a defense "to access these images for research or out of curiosity."

As part of the cautioning procedure, Townshend's fingerprints, photograph and a DNA sample will be taken by police and he will be placed on a national sex offender registry for five years.

You'd have to live under a rock to think visiting child porn sites is biz as usual but that's the mentality of the rich/famous, nothing is out of reach. If he was doing research why not contact LE? They could put him in touch with investigative groups that could've helped him with his "research" or they could've advised him not to go there at all.

It would've kept him legal but no people like him are blatant/think they're untouchable. No one dares tell them the crazy crap they do is wrong so the sky's the limit.

Imo had this been a normal citizen or a "sexting" teen they'd be in a world of $#&%. When he chose to use his credit card he became a financial supporter for the industry whether he was doing "research" or not. For this reason his excuse is as worthless as he is. I simply can't believe he's that dumb or naive.

I saw the Who in Chicago in 1980 and now I can't listen to their music without feeling disgust. I mention it every time the Who comes up in coversation. I'll never forget and I won't let anyone else either.
