Facebook's Future Plans for Data Collection Beyond All Imagination

I sort of feel this is like people that jump into the ocean then complain they got wet. Additionally it's also a bit hypocritical because when the local coffee shop remembers that you like a "triple coffee with cream and sugar" it's an awesome thing and that has been going on for how many decades?

If/when the time comes that companies gathering online info on me gets annoying then I'll stop using technology. Since my career is based on technology though I can't see it happening any time soon. Hell I am sitting here right now with 3 different smartphones (iPhone, Droid, Windows) and when I get up to leave because my day is over I am not going to think for a second that in grabbing one of them big bad Google may know that Im going to stop and get some iced tea.

I realize that not everyone has the same frame of mind and to those people they have the choice of staying away from online anything that requires personal information.

Well they know I like hats. I think thats about it.

Should I erase my googles and hide my youtubes??? I'm skeered.

I never said anything about facebook telling people what to say and put on there just that facebook will gladly take any and all info, including the moments that people are NOT aware of. I believe the app permissions ask to be able to turn on audio and video at any and all time, people do not realize this when they allow it.


You are right that people make the mistake of posting nonsense, which is part of why I left. At this point everyone has been warned and it is on them. Does not mean that I can't be disgusted with facebook and its policy anyhow. Preying on the simple minded is wrong any way you look at it.

Nothing new, this has been happening a long time. Those coupons you always get in mail and paper etc. Market research has been going on since the first neanderthal drug the first mate off by the hair lol.

This exact thing happened to a friend of mine. He showed up at work and was arrested over a FB post. They put him on house arrest and after several court dates, he was eventually cleared, but he still lost his job over it and had to pay a bunch of fines and court fees.

It's been determined (and on msm) that the NSA has been monitoring and collecting data from almost everyone in the world that has a cellphone, or an email address.

Plus, gaming machines are spying on us in our living rooms.

It wouldn't make sense if Facebook wasn't spying on us as well....

I haven't been on FB since Oct 2012 when a friend of mine died. I tried to log in from me cell
& was denied access. I passed all security info & was still denied. They then started posting
photos of people they wanted me to identify...okay I identified the 1st two...the next one I did
not know & ALL of a sudden it dawned on me how Bloody WRONG this is in the first place.

I sent them a message not so pleasant...bloody hell I just lost a close friend & cannot even
check in with friends. I have NOT been back since. The KICK in the FACE is it doesn't seem to
matter whether you are on it or not as you are ALWAYS on FB because other people put and
keep you there without you knowing...that bloody sucks! Even people that don't know you but
might have seen you...example if I have a bloody great run with me Border Collie at a Sheep Dog Trial.

So nothing is free from FB period...I hate that!

P.S. You're not required to pay court fees, or fined if you're exonerated. How well do you know said friend?

He ended up with a lesser charge of disorderly conduct, hence the court fees. So, he didn't get out of with nothing, but it could have been worse. Whatever he had posted wasn't specific enough, and that is what saved him from going to jail for 6 months over it.

He uploaded a video to youtube telling his story, because part of it was discrimination, at least as perceived by him. After hearing the back story, I agree that it played a role.

I'd link to the newspaper story, but I don't feel right about that. I just looked it up and the reason for arrest was "threatening a local business".

Something freaked me out the other day... My husband and I have started going to church. We're still not sure about it so we haven't told anyone. Early last Sunday morning google plus sent me a notification of the estimated commute time to this church. I hate that someone is paying attention to where I go and seeing patterns in places I frequent without me checking in or anything. Who knows what else they know?

you're disgusted with the fact that facebook happily collects everything thrown at it, but think about it for a moment. they have absolutely NO control over what gets thrown at them.

NO control. got it? it's not like there's some evil plot to take over people's privacy. it's rather like getting caught pants-down in the middle of the townsquare while taking a pee and being disgusted by the fact that CCTVs are recording you. how dare they, right?

and when it comes to apps, audio and video, i'm not entirely sure what are you talking about, but i can safely label it as both BS and FUD:
- first, any facebook app to be able to do anything, including accessing your cam and mic, has to be opened - opening facebook itself isn't enough
- second, facebook itself gives you settings limiting the amount of data any particular app can access
- third, any access to mic and/or camera requires flash player security dialog to be displayed for that particular app, and neither facebook nor app authors have any control over that - it cannot be bypassed. when it gets displayed for the first time, you have the option to allow or deny access and you can store that answer as a default for that single app - you can change your choice at any time via control panel.

there's no such thing as 'the moments that people are NOT aware of' that gets stored. it ended up on facebook - it got shared on facebook - someone posted it there - that person is solely responsible for her own stupidity if it wasn't supposed to get shared. if people aren't thinking about what they're doing, it's their own fault. also, keep in mind that tagging something as 'visible only for me' doesn't equal to 'facebook cannot see it' - of course they can, because they're hosting it, and anyone with half a brain should be able to figure that out, as well as the fact that as soon as someone breaks into such facebook account, they will be able to see it as well. on the other hand, facebook provides you with such security measures that when you configure your account correctly, attacker will need access to your cell phone to break in, and access to both cell phone and email account to do it in a way you wouldn't notice, so they're actually giving you every possible way to protect your privacy. want more? don't use it at all.

far more evil is done by people that blindly click links shared by others on facebook without thinking for a moment if it's not malware, giving permissions to apps just to see some fake content - because such malware apps (which facebook isn't able to stop from spreading without shutting down their whole app platform) not only spread like a wildfire amongst stupid people not able to think, but can get access to all their content posted on facebook, so basically millions of people are willingly giving out all their privacy to some random hackers/evil companies posting crap on facebook without even reading a single word about it, while complaining about facebook being evil.

there's only one advice for such people: if you can't handle the internet, don't use it - problem solved.

This is a typical example of why the public mistrusts this technology. Terrorism is one thing, but COMMERCIALISM is an entirely different entity. Modern day commercialism and their insatiable lust to find out everything about YOU, borders upon the same insanity of hunting terrorists throughout the planet.

Did Google help the NSA and as a reward they were allowed to legally use the technology for their own commercial gain and advancement, simply so they can pitch more products to you.

If this is the case then according to traditional laws doesn't this violate "Consumer Rights", "Monopoly Acts" and
Cyber Stalking
