A great thread and interesting look into the past.....

Japan invented and built a potentially critical weapon.
America & Allies were oblivious to this.
We get hold after we win BUT
Sink them because of the potential risk of the info for the commies....
Find them 60+ years later.....

Didn't the soviets build a "mother" submarine which housed three or four attack subs - "Typhoon class?"...

The Typhoon is a missile boat. It's the biggest in the world, but it's only a missile boat.

My mistake - I just remember reading in the MSM as a significant younger person about a BIG sub from the USSR.

Submersible aircraft carriers - very Sci-Fi

They had sailed from Japan, and had reached a refuel point, but it had a US ship parked there, so they were supposed to move onto an alternate point, when they were ordered to surrender, because the war was over. Both subs were taken to Hawaii, along with another one based on improved U-boat technology from Germany, where they were examined by the US Navy. They were all sunk off Hawaii, because under the treaty they would have had to allow the Soviet Union access to them.

I can't believe we just sunk them. Secretly keeping one to develop the technology is too potent of a weapon. If nothing else, we must have had the plans to them.

Makes you wonder if we have them now, I imagine the designs would be significantly improved with VTOL aircraft (think that's the name, I know virtually nothing about military hardware) making runways less of a factor.

VTOL is overrated honestly. You can't take off with any kind of payload, or fuel load, unless you take off conventionally. It's really only good for coming back.

I suppose those were impressive back in the day, but nowadays nuclear ballistic missile submarines are even larger. Today we don't have any use for a submarine that can carry aircraft, because we have aircraft with increased range and capabilities. But we should remember that these Japanese submarines only carried three small floatplanes, although they were armed, and styled "attack floatplanes."
