Roman Podbrezova, 65, had gone for a morning walk when he saw the drastic change to the river which runs through the centre of the town.

‘I just could not believe my eyes,’ he said. ‘The river was dark red. It was like something from a horror film. Blood cascading through the centre of town.’

Ok, I know I know - it's 'mail online' - but I am so intrigued by these Moses like 'end-times oh-my-god-the-river-runs-red stories.'

Another local said: ‘This is really creepy. Yesterday evening I walked past here and it was its normal color.

‘Now it looks like someone slaughtered 1,000 virgins or something. I'm not superstitious, and we've never had any serial killers or anything like that here, but this isn't normal.

Oh my!

Police spokesman Elena Antalova said: ‘We are checking the source of the blood and what caused it.

Does anyone know if it's "blood", or if it's chemicals?

I saw that this morning and youtube is busting with videos about what is causing it. I am sure we will have some kind of scientific answer for it soon enough though. I have seen other bodies of water do this and algae was the cause. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

This happened once where I worked in a mill on the Olympic peninsula. The mill owners dumped a few barrels of wood stain into the river one night and turned the whole thing red for a day or so. (Don't ask why I have no idea.)

No apocalypse, not even a visit from the EPA AFAIK.

i'm sure the end times won't start there.

I know... I'm pessimistic when it comes to mankind ; )

- chemical spill.
Either as suggested before a wood or textile die. As a woodworker I know they're not good for momma nature. They are either based on pigments (kind of ok) or chemical and oxydes (not so good).
It could also be (worst scenario) a leak from an aluminium plant as it happened not too long ago in Hungary. I am sure some of you guys will remember.

I've heard of big red algea blooms in the ocean but not in fresh water (flowing fresh water). In stagnant fresh waters it can happen. And it makes pink flamingoes. hehe

Yeah I've seen this before also in China . It's indeed believed to be algea...

It`s Slovakia so i`m going to go with the blood of a thousand virgins ha ha ha ha, brilliant.
