New Madrid - Quake watch

This is a site that monitors the New Madrid quake zone, its showing higher than normal reading:-

ADVANCED PREDICTION SYSTEM

Our sensor is located on a fault in the New Madrid zone, monitoring pressures that produce earthquakes. We do not use any outside methods. Our sensors tell us when conditions are perfect for quakes. Once fully implemented our networked system can give 10 minutes of critical advanced notice of quake motion, as well as many hours notice of times of concern and location it will impact. The sensor works by monitoring the Earth's core interactions much like deep ground penetrating radar and stress is measured on the fault. This geotransensor may also indicate global earthquake and volcano risk many hours in advance as a result of its ability to measure core instability.

Levels are super high today. This is very much not normal. We have checked the sensor and it is reporting correctly. We can only wait and see what usgs reports.

Perhaps the weather channel may be a little on the porn side as well some days, better not listen to that as well.

Maybe the masons will have work in Washington repairing the monument after all. It will be a good Christmas present for them to have work lined up all winter. I liked working with the masons, pouring concrete, laying block, and putting in brick and tile was fun. I never got to work with terrazo, I wish I would have done some of that.

So let the quake begin. Masons are my kind of people and they need work. Maybe the falling stones in Washington will knock some sense into Congress and the president.....I guess that may be asking for a little too much....that is almost impossible. S&F

Sorry for being a little off topic. I wonder if the news will inform anyone in those areas that there is a possible risk increase or whether they will blow it off like they did in Italy. My brother is driving to Florida tomorrow, I'll have to wait and see if he will be having any good conversation material when he gets back for Christmas.

Didn't mean to offend you. I will keep an eye on this as well others.

The NMSZ is an known possible catastrophic event that could happen at any time, if ever.
Just like everything else in the world of ours.

I don't know much about the warning systems in the U.S. , but I believe any warning is a good one even if it just reminds people to be aware.

Who is in the area, or near the area that can say how the animals have been acting?

It would be interesting to see if the animals are behaving strangely?

Well, if we're gonna do this, it better happen before I go back to work next week because the very last place I want to be is on the second floor of that office building. All it takes to make the floor shake is for someone to walk past my desk. I shudder to think what an actual quake would do to it.

If and when it happens, it might be due to our greed and robbing the natural resources from mother Earth.....

The number of earthquakes has increased dramatically over the past few years within the central and eastern United States. More than 300 earthquakes above a magnitude 3.0 occurred in the three years from 2010-2012, compared with an average rate of 21 events per year observed from 1967-2000.

This increase in earthquakes prompts two important questions: Are they natural, or man-made? And what should be done in the future as we address the causes and consequences of these events to reduce associated risks? USGS scientists have been analyzing the changes in the rate of earthquakes as well as the likely causes, and they have some answers.

USGS scientists have found that at some locations the increase in seismicity coincides with the injection of wastewater in deep disposal wells. Much of this wastewater is a byproduct of oil and gas production and is routinely disposed of by injection into wells specifically designed and approved for this purpose.

Because the ones with the money and influence say it doesn't hurt anything. You know how that saying goes....money talks and something else walks. Big gas companies that have politicians in their pockets.

Plus you have to wonder if TPTB really care if a large portion of the population were wiped out. Fewer people. Sorry for going off topic.

I am in Middle Tennessee, (fairly close to the NM) and the animals here are fine.

I watch Ceri almost everyday. I haven't seen much of an uptick in the quakes over the last few years. (I have an untrained eye however.)

I agree that fracking is a HUGE gamble. I see it as a game not unlike Jenga where they are carefully pulling things out and putting things back in, knowing all along that eventually it will all come crashing down.

Will the New Madrid shake us off her back anytime soon? I don't think so, but like I said, I have an untrained eye.

A friend went to the Land Between the Lakes area of Kentucky, and was told that if he ever considered moving there to get a home on the "correct" side of the dam, in case New Madrid goes off. I'd hate to be sitting there on the wrong side of the dam when the ground began to move and crack. whoops.

This is one of those disasters which isn't really overdue, if I remember the major earthquake timeline correctly.

The results indicate that Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri are most severely impacted.
Illinois and Kentucky are also impacted, though not as severely as the previous three
states. Nearly 715,000 buildings are damaged in the eight-state study region. About
42,000 search and rescue personnel working in 1,500 teams are required to respond to
the earthquakes. Damage to critical infrastructure (essential facilities, transportation and
utility lifelines) is substantial in the 140 impacted counties near the rupture zone,
including 3,500 damaged bridges and nearly 425,000 breaks and leaks to both local
and interstate pipelines. Approximately 2.6 million households are without power after
the earthquake. Nearly 86,000 injuries and fatalities result from damage to
infrastructure. Nearly 130 hospitals are damaged and most are located in the impacted
counties near the rupture zone. There is extensive damage and substantial travel delays in
both Memphis, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri, thus hampering search and rescue as
well as evacuation. Moreover roughly 15 major bridges are unusable. Three days after
the earthquake, 7.2 million people are still displaced and 2 million people seek
temporary shelter. Direct economic losses for the eight states total nearly $300 billion,
while indirect losses may be at least twice this amount.

The contents of this report provide the various assumptions used to arrive at the impact
estimates, detailed background on the above quantitative consequences, and a breakdown
of the figures per sector at the FEMA region and state levels. The information is
presented in a manner suitable for personnel and agencies responsible for establishing
response plans based on likely impacts of plausible earthquakes in the central USA.

A truly catastrophic scenario indeed.

Keep in mind when looking at this, the NMSZ is a very clearly outlined and defined area. The mini-quakes in central Arkansas aren't related to the New Madrid zone. This is all my backyard too, and I'm intensely sensitive to any events or news out of the zone area. My area, by stroke of geologic weirdness, would survive almost anything off the new Madrid despite being fairly close to the center of it ...but go East or North/South? It seems real different. That thing could cut our nation in half for rail and highway traffic.

Do we have past periods to compare to saying this is unusual though? I'm just wondering because in looking at the Memphis raw data, the small quakes seem all over for TN, AR, OK, TX and elsewhere. No real pattern to fixate on the NMSZ?
