That would be global warming.....
Oh wait a minute.

It cant be climate change, we have had climate change since the earth came into existence, long before "life" let alone humans.

I remember that in the 60's we were entering a mini "Ice Age".

One thing you can rely on the meteorologists for.... A tendency to exaggerate.

Yeah,
They can't predict a damn thing but they all know that whatever happens, it's gonna be "REALLY,REALLY BAD!"

I'll reserve judgments on the cold winter, till next week. They've predicted -16, in southern BC, where this only occurs on some years, Jan-Feb for short periods, but normally about 0 to -6. We'll see.

If it does do that beginning of December, something odd is going on with the climate.

Up until then, we've had some weird snow that immediately melted and October type days, sunshine and warmish.

Next week will be the clincher for this area.

Fracking teams, slowly creating crevices etc. in sub-surface roks, gas plus removed and sub-surface aerated. But then who am I to say that??

I think definitions have changed a lot more than the climate has.

Spot on.

We have been on the border of Laos and Thailand for the last month. I have only used the air conditioner twice in the late afternoon. It has absolutely been the best time (temp wise) I can remember in the last 45 years. I have even walked 18 holes of golf a few times without vapor locking. !

www.academia.org...

Richard Lindzen, a former meteorologist at MIT, in his first presentation as the newest distinguished fellow at the libertarian think tank Cato Institute, tore into global warming alarmists.

Scientists, instead of adhering to the old model of science and objectivity, were “eager participants” in the global warming hoopla. This is “an infiltration that gets too little attention” in today’s society. For example, before global warming exploded onto the scene, Lindzen said, “no one at MIT called themselves climate scientists.” They were oceanographers and meteorologists by trade, but “only when funding came did we become climate scientists.”

Lindzen pulled no punches and blasted global warming scientists’ fixed models, where they purposefully adjusted their models to fit their political views because their models are “failing.” One such model showed that solar output was 20-30% less today than in past years, which meant that eventually the earth’s oceans would freeze. That has not happened because “temperatures were pretty much what they are today.” All of these adjusted models conform to the politics of the issue. In his own words, Lindzen said, “when you know there is a need for a political answer…people will try to meet that need.”

I am still on the fence about global warming but I am not on the fence about the flow of money for con artist. Electric bills have gone up 41% in many places due to all the EPA directed shut down of coal fired power plants and that is just the start. Humans are horrible so if they are gonna live make them pay to other horrible humans who are smarter and deserve it.

We better hope there really is global warming an not another ice age like some are saying we are entering. Just a few years ago the forecast was we were supposed to be underwater along our coastal cities and what wasn't flooded was supposed to be blown away with Atlantic hurricanes. But that is a convenient forecast best forgotten by the alarmist. In the next 15 years coupled with the last 15 years we will have more data and the answer should be clear whether it will be sun tan lotion time or more clothes for warmth. I personally doubt money will change which way the temp goes.

If normal weather is so rare it's thread worthy...
You might be experiencing climate change.

Then again, we might be experiencing a rush to judgment to label the latest storm a super storm and further doom porn meant to drive prices for raw materials, food, and energy, through the roof once again...every single person who uses doom and gloom reporting, especially with weather and climate (when we have only about one hundred years of SOLID DATA under our belts...every thing else is PURE SPECULATION AND SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATION), should be ashamed of themselves...

This scheme is as plain as the nose on a face...and just as ugly as that of Karl Malden...

This thread title is misleading. Low max temperature is different from record lows set.

Maybe significant information, but the sensationalist spin will spread ignorance. If you don't get the real information from the source, you might be led to believe by the title that nearly a thousand record low temperatures were actually set, and that is just not the case.

It should be fixed for clarity and for accuracy in reporting.

Well, all I can say is that it has been a cool spell here in NW Ohio over the past 6 months. Except for a nearly 20 year stint in E Central FL I have lived in Lucas CO OH for better than 2/3 of my life. And what is going on is nothing new.
The monthly data for the closest NWS reporting station to me was released overnight. Being a weather nut it is one of the first things I look at and, Toledo OH ended up -3.7° for the average November temp. I averaged out the period June thru November and we are 1.08° BELOW average..(Knock off the Toledo jokes please! LOL)
For me it is just what Mama Nature does...If the weather were constant it would be boring.

Just two weeks ago we had a tornado tear it up less than 5 miles from the house. Not the first Nov tornado that I have seen around here...it happens!
For those that would like to access their local data here is where I go:
Go to your local NWS radar page and above the radar image to the left click on the NWS office name.
The forecast map is now up. In the left column scroll down to "Climate" and click on Local.
On the climate page you will see "Observed Weather Reports" and there will be categories listed. For your monthly data use the second category "Preliminary Monthly Climate Data (CF6) and choose the reporting station for your area. The selection for most recent is the default. Click "go' and there you have it. There is a wealth of data on this page. Give it a look.

You can also access archived data from here. Just remember, the departure from normal temperature is based on the average temperatures from the month.

There is another thing to consider here also...
The data may just be "close" for you as it is for me. Distance from the nearest reporting station plus geographic and/or local environmental factors for where you actually live (Heat island effect, elevation, etc.) may skew the data.
For me it is skewed a little as Toledo Express Airport is at the other end of the county plus I live just three miles from the Lake Erie shore. (Some spring days it can be 80°F at KTOL and 68-70°F here at the house with just light NE breeze.)

Check it out and have fun looking at the data. And just remember one little thing. The man that thinks he can change the weather is both arrogant and ignorant. Weather will do what it does...change...it has to change given Natural Law.

Or they might just actually be superstorms happening more frequently. Nah couldn't be that cuz Al Gore, NWO and taxes, amirite?

I have had an idea, how we can solve this....

Just get Al Gore and chums to get into high gear with all the hot air that comes out of their mouths or should I say arseholes. It will be tropical weather in no time.

Errr...hmmm...nope. What is increasing are prices, from people taking advantage of those who are subjected to this idiotic nonsense...

As people spread out, people are going to be subjected to things never before experienced ON A PERSONAL LEVEL (not to mean it has never happened TO ANYONE ELSE). As technology improves, so does the ability to communicate to a greater audience and at faster speeds.

And just like a little kid who will let you know that he/she is NOT TWO, but TWO and a HALF years old (by God, you are NOT GOING TO SCREW ME out of that half-year, you bastard) or the adults who exaggerate their height by an inch or two (males) or state their weight or age is 120 or 29 (females), so too this behavior manifests itself in the field of weather reporting...

Ever consider changing your profile name to Chicken Little?

Well, the extreme low of -16, predicted for sometime this week, for the Smilkameen/Okanagan, hasn't occurred yet.

Its a nice mild December 1st, plus 1 above C, yet a light skim of snow falling. When it warms several degrees by noon, expect it all gone I don't like snow, so have hopes that we don't see much of it this year, not that we usually do in this area. Usually doesn't last long.

That cold blast down here was positively refreshing! I hope it's a long, cold winter. Wait, that sounds like I'm hoping for other people's frozen, snowy misery. What I mean to say is I hope it's a chilly one for us in Florida. Most of the year is an insufferable sauna down here, I'll gladly take many more days in the 50's as a reward for being in a state of perma-sweating the majority of the year

As a Scottish man.....What is this strange land you talk off ?

Winter in the penis-shaped state otherwise known as Florida is typically warm, in the 70's (21*C - 26*C) That's probably pretty toasty to you Scots, eh? It does get chilly, I swear. One or two days a year, anyway. Our Thanksgiving cold snap here in the Tampa area I believe maxed out at 56*F/13*C for the high temperature, the morning low was about 39*F/4*C. Normally, our coldest month is January, with highs in the 60's (15*C - 20*C) And back in 1989 it really DID get cold enough to snow this far south (actually, as far south as 50 miles further than here. A light dusting, but it was snow, I watched it accumulate on roofs
Our spring & summer high temps are typically between 85*F & 95*F (29*C to 35*C) 10 months of that crap, and a few of us welcome seeing our breath hang in the air on exhale.

Considering we've been able to track and measure storms worldwide for decades now, I'd say we can accurately determine upward and downward trends.

I'll see your decades and raise you centuries of weather we have no idea about...only speculation...If you think decades is enough to make a definitive statement regarding the actual strength of storms, then you are making a mistake.

Again, the reason these storms are costing so much is simply because the cost of materials and supplies are artificially and summarily JACKED UP when the tiniest HINT of a storm appears in the news...

So yeah, the cost is more severe, but the actual strength of any modern storms in comparison to past storms prior to data collection is a purely subjective exercise.

I'm sure the source I cited in the OP has a link to the editor or some other means of contacting them directly to lodge a complaint about their choice of wording.

I directly quoted the title in the source I cited...and preventing those kinds of issues on controversial topics is exactly why I often direct quote headlines for title.

It's rather cold over here for this time of the year as well. I would say lows around 55f/13c lows at night right now, when it would normally be lows of 62f/17c.

The coldest part of the year here is around the first week of February, so I'm curious to see the winter next year brings.

Thanks for this subject, it's cold here and aircon doesn't exist.. the only heat is to make a fire or buy a portable electric heater.

and again the cold weather is supposed to be some sort of proof that climate change isn't happening even though it was predicted. global warming models have never said that winter would cease to exist. it predicts certain areas to freeze over eventually (some refer to this as the mini ice age). global warming changes the weather patterns. it doesn't mean we are all going to sweat to death. i know it's a tough concept to understand that when the earth warms there will be parts that freeze that weren't frozen before.......
