Marine biologist Bjarni Mikkelse said he knew a beached whale on the Faroe Islands would have some trapped gas, but he was still surprised when the dead animal exploded when he cut into it Tuesday.

"The animal was more than two days old when we took it so we knew there would be some pressure on the inside, but nothing like what happened," Mikkelse, who works at the National Museum of the Faroe Islands, told the Daily Mail after a video of the whale exploding made its way online.

He was cutting along the dorsal part in the hopes of keeping the sperm whale's skeleton in tact for preservation.

"It wasn't a shock. We had expected something. In the situation I was more worried about something worse happening or anyone getting hurt," Mikkelse said.

Now imagine getting blasted on by a bunch of rotting flesh and intestines....kinds gross how the whale just pops open.....eeeeeek!

As morbid as it is, you just made my day.
Impressive as it is disgusting.

The same sort of thing happened in Taiwan many years back.
Here's a clip from a NatGeo video explaining the occurrence, it may be choppy, but it definitely shows the viscera and blood on the roads in this city in Taiwan.

I swear that I could smell the stink just by watching the video.

That is the most gruesome thing I have ever seen. Awesome.

I have to edit this story in. My youngest son is 100% boy. Toad in the pockets kind of kid. One day when he was 7 he came home and said, "Dad! There is a dead skunk up by the school (it was 3 blocks down from us)."

I said, "Oh yeah? Stay away from it. Dead animals have disease". His response is something I can never forget....

"Stay away from it? Why? Its awesome! Every time I run over it with my bike it farts".

That video is pretty horrible. I think I'll make my girlfriend watch it later. LOL.

This reminds me of a story my father told me of when he was a kid. This was back in the early 40's and he said that some of the neighborhood boys started jumping on a dead cow(yeah gross). The cow apparently exploded all of everyone in the vicinity.

Body gasses can be pretty extreme.
