Because the islands have been considered Japanese territory. For islands that China claims were so important for fishing they didn't have a problem with Japan having a fish processing plant on them for almost 50 years, and with them fishing heavily in the area. At least not until the resources were found under them.

Well then I guess you don't have a problem with them placing it over the Korean one either then because Korea placed it there first so it's an obvious provocation.

Jesus can China do ANYTHING wrong here?

Absolutely. If Japan had done what China did, and placed an ADIZ over Chinese territory, I'd be making the same points, but on the side of China. But they didn't, did they, oh wait according to you the fact that Japan developed the islands, used them without China saying anything, and China admitting they ceded them to Japan doesn't mean a damn thing. No, you have no bias.

You think you are right and China thinks it is right.......The stakes have just been raised

China said it launched two fighter planes on Friday to investigate flights by a dozen US and Japanese reconnaissance and military planes in its new self-declared air defence zone, raising the stakes in a stand-off over disputed territories in the East China Sea.

Do you really want to go to war with China ?

If China wants to start the trouble then yes. Do you think a few planes and one carrier is a threat to America and her allies?

Nobody is going to war. The flights through the ADIZ will continue. China will intercept, shadow, monitor and identify and life will go on. China is not going to force down or engage anything within that zone.

Considering that China brought down a US EP-3 in international airspace, and detained the crew, and looted the equipment and nothing happened this won't lead to war either.

China has actively shot at other countries military units over islands they claim with no right to them and out hasn't led to war.

Does China really want to go to war with the US?

I think that's a more pertinent and appropriate question seeing as China is the one that issued the ridiculous declaration in the first place...

China and the United States are almost sq. mile for mile the same in land size. China has 4x's our population across that same land area. They could literally lose MORE than the ENTIRE US POPULATION and still have overpopulation issues with over 1 billion people to care for.

China won't push this to war because China doesn't do stupid things for no gain, as a historic rule. They're after something, but those piddly islands between Mainland and Japan aren't it. This is just a test run to see how bitchy the international community can or will be right now, with so much happening elsewhere.

If I were Taiwan, I'd be watching the outcome of this VERY VERY carefully. If China is deterred, Taiwan may stay free a few more years. If not? China may just get around to doing what it's had on it's 'To-Do' list for around 60 some years now.

And apart from nuke China there is not much America can do except force a no fly zone on it coastal regions and blockade its ports.

Going in all USA USA USA! like you did in Iraq and Afghanistan will just result in a million + dead American Soldiers (and most likley Japanese, Korean and probbaly Brits and French) and not much to show for it expect maybe capture the odd city or two.

O and the destruction of BOTH the US and Chinese Econemys.

Even in a conventional war with no nukes neither side can win. Neither side could occupy each other. America unlike china could land troops but that’s as far as it would get.

In this instance I think China just badly miscalculated both the swiftness and the firmness of the response.

They may have gambled that because the US has it's hands full in other matters around the world and Japan with Fukushima, they could kind of "slip this one by" with nothing more than some token words of protest initially and then after a while when people realized they would have to more forcefully protest, enough time would have gone by such that China would be able to get some large concessions for removing said ridiculous decree.

Or, they may have just been testing the world's resolve on matters like this.

Either way, they are not going to come out of this looking good at all and it now becomes a matter of trying to save face, which to China is *extremely* important and which is why this is still a dangerous situation.

That's my thinking on this anyway...

This could go plenty of different ways. It basically comes down to whether or not China feels the need to not be pushed around by the US and Japan. It really is as simple as that. Does China back down to the US and Japan, or does China maintain defiance and take measures against the US and Japan whether it's in their best interest or not?

Psychopathic responses often times produce interesting results. For instance, if consequences be damned and China didn't care about the repercussions, China could embargo goods headed to the US by 10% with every airspace incursion. Considering that it's the US's sworn duty to protect Japan via treaty, it'd be the US that suffers for every incursion. China could double down by also stating publicly to all news stations that it chooses to not purchase any more US debt while this issue remains unresolved.

China could bring the US to it's knees without firing a single shot. All it has to do is deny goods exported to the US during the Christmas shopping season, and to not purchase any debt. Those two steps would have the Americans killing themselves without a single shot fired by the Chinese when store shelves remain empty.

Regardless of the psychopathic solution used, or even considered, it's my opinion that this is about a whole lot more than some islands. We're just not seeing what this is really about. The amount of escalation will determine how bad things really are. The world hasn't seen world war since the late 30's. Perhaps we're due.

...and probably half the food as the US has tons of arable land and China a fraction of same, not counting petroleum and other resources. I hate it that they have such a tyranny but one wonders if a true democracy could work there.

You know, you raise a really interesting point on that. I think there are some nations where Western powers should help establish free systems of Government for the failure which exists for one reason or another in a given place. (Some......) There are many others we need to just accept as working with the system they have, for whatever reason or however they make it work, and leave it entirely alone.

Some of those, because screwing with what is there isn't worth the cost. Somalia and then Iraq, in that order, come to mind. Doubling down on bad bad ideas, indeed.

China is among a smaller class we flat out have no business trying to teach anything to, IMO. They were very old and still knew antiquity in their own direct history 1,000 years before any European set foot on North American soil. (Including the Vikings). If there is one nation we need to consider a peer and not a lesser to look down upon, they'd be it IMHO.

Who said we'd even have to put troops on the ground? Right now China can't go toe to toe with the USand they know it. They have zero ability to project power beyond their immediate neighbors.

They can't go nuclear because that defeats the purpose if they're out for resources. Any fight with the US would be an air war, where the US has every advantage.

Mr Bob

"A number of regional commercial airlines - including Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Korean Air - have said they will comply with China's new requirements."

Where's the fun in that....? Those damn airlines are far to quick in capitulating with the [SNIPPED].....;-)

Maybe "armed escorts" is the future
