At one point, anti smoking campaign turned into an anti smokers campaign.

The only historical novelty here is that "yellow ribbons with stars" are not tied to the sleeves of smokers, but are used to mark places where smokers are not allowed.

Taxes on cigarettes are 10 times their production costs. Smokers are filling state budget like no one else. This just shows the cannibalistic nature of society.

ObamaCare slams smokers with sky-high premium costs, could backfire

Ok so this is on FoxNews, so if it is untrue or sensationalized I can understand. However if this is true, this is incredibly shady and unfair for smokers.

ObamaCare may have backfired in its goal of making smoking so expensive that users quit, public health experts say, as sky-high insurance premiums force smokers to drop coverage altogether and lose smoking cessation programs along with it.

What is it with progressives and their eternal war on smoking? Just leave it alone. I was happy now that they have to smoke outside so that the smoke has to dissipate into the air. I don't have to get smoked out of a room and while slightly inconvenienced by going outside, smokers are still able to happily partake in their vice. But Obamacare seems to want to let insurance companies charge as much as 50% more for smokers' policies. OUCH!

Progressives and their eternal war on smoking?

LOL

Good job taking any opportunity to turn an issue into divisive partisan tripe. I never realized that smoking was a common / popular issue among us evil liberal socialist progressives. In fact, I always assumed that we scary scary progressives include many working class / "lower" class folks.... of which there is quite a large overlap with the group classified as "smokers."

Don't assume that just because people like that old rotting corpse in a suit Diane Feinstein, or her political soul mate Chuck Schumer may (unfortunately) have a little "D" next to their name, that they actually represent the wishes of their constituencies, let alone all "liberals."

Now that I've addressed the superfluous partisan BS, I have to say this is pretty messed up, but it's also nothing new. Insurance companies have been penalizing smokers for quite a long time now. Generally speaking, insurance companies have been screwing people in all kinds of ways, for quite a long time now. Horribly corrupt. One of the industries that needs the most reform. Unfortunately, they also have tons of money, and the kind of power that comes with it. Why do you think we got Obamacare in the first place? More cash for the bloated ticks and leeches we call Insurance Providers.

This is just people not thinking. You never answer YES to a smoker question, and go out and buy a VAP, just to cover yourself. VAP's deliver nicotine. Make sure that you save this receipt in your personal papers. A life or health insurance company that has you tested for nicotine content alive or dead, has no defense against someone who quit smoking, and uses a VAP as a replacement, because it is not smoking.

An added thought.... Wanna make enough money to afford ObamaCare? Go drop a grand in one of the top VAP public companies (not mentioning, do your homework). Sales are about to boom because of this garbage. Hey, I should get a commission on this!!!!

The law was written by the insurance industry so it's no surprise. They will gouge folks in any way they can.

well now that they have their foot in the door it`s just a matter of time before they start charging higher premiums for other unhealthy habits and lifestyles.
fat folks will be next to have their premiums jacked up for being being fat.
you like outdoor activities like skiing, boating, jetskiing etc? say hello to higher premiums, those activities have a greater risk of being injured and costing the ins. company money.
The ins. companies will find a way to charge everyone higher premiums for something in their lives that could be considered unhealthy or high risk.

High tax on cigarettes was and still is extremely effective in Australia.

Chronic diseases have a massive burden on society, tobacco is a risk factor for most of these chronic diseases, so decreasing the amount of smokers would actually benefit the government

Sin Tax: "Proudly screwing the people out of their pocket change since 1643"

Mea culpa, mea culpa... mea maxima culpa

Translates to: "I sin, therefore I pay."

See ?

Our governments know what their doing, man.

I call it the "Wag-The-Finger-At-The-Sinner-And-Everyone-Drops-Their-Head-In-Shame-And-Willingly-Submits-To-Pay" trick.

"Charging tobacco users more in health insurance premiums, sometimes thousands of dollars more, studies have shown, will price smokers out of the market," says Singleterry.

Unlike drug addicts, alcoholics, or the obese -- all of whom represent higher-than-average medical costs -- smokers are the only such group with a pre-existing condition that ObamaCare penalizes. It allows insurance companies to charge smokers up to 50 percent more than non-smokers for an identical policy, depending on the state and any subsidies the person might qualify for.

For example, premiums for a 64-year-old non-smoker, according to the Kaiser Health Calculator, cost $9,000 a year for a standard "silver" insurance plan.

The same policy for a smoker could cost $13,600.

That is absurd and completely unfair. This is just straight up selective penalization. Now of these other unhealthy vices have surcharges attached to them, but smoking does. I'm not even a smoker and I find a problem with this.

isn't that a pre-condition?

we paid the taxes already!!!
it's messed up.

Hell, that doesn't matter. The bastards lied to us about Obamacare, so I sure as Hell won't have any qualms over lying to them about my smoking habit. I only hope that there millions of others that are willing to do same. As the old saying goes, "What's good for goose, is good for the gander!"

See ya,

Nicotine is an addictive substance so this addiction should be considered a pre-existing condition. Do they raise the premium rates on Alcoholics and Street Drug Addicts too? Smoking is LEGAL. Being financially punished for this addiction rather than medically treated is hypocrisy.

It's easy to pick on smokers because the "fix" is available in almost every gas station and grocery store. It's a predatory way to fleece people who have an addiction.

Let's see,

Drug addicts using dirty needles is a proven health hazard

Male gay sex is a proven health hazard

Too much sugar and fat are proven health hazards

Just as I warned my OB GYN when we got into a GATT / NAFTA debate and I said, not everyone is going to be a doctor and being a factory worker is an honorable job and his attitude was they need to get a better education, and I said, wait until they find a way to get rid of your job, and now insurance companies are sending people overseas for operations that are cheaper there without the high insurance and litigation issues, you people castigating smokers just wait until your ox is gored!

You get a DWI... your health insurance will go up 50%

You get a blood test showing back cholesterol it will go up 50%

You play a dangerous sport yours will go up 50%

Let's just add to the list you hypocrites. This law is unconstitutional and I won't participate. When enough of us say no, it will fall apart.... ummm wait, it is.

My advice, don't sign up for obamacare unless you need it.

Pay the yearly fines, unless you don't file taxes, in that case don't pay the fines either.

If and when you get sick and need insurance, sign up then. They can't deny you coverage based on preexisting conditions, so don't sign up unless you need it.

From what I've seen of the premiums and out of pocket costs, especially with exchange plans you'll be filing for bankruptcy whether your insured or not if you wind up in the hospital for anything major.

Oh and when your out of the hospital, drop your insurance.

It's the Divide and Conquer game/now here's Bammy

This was designed to keep people arguing thus divided. All of this bummercare charade was engineered from the get go including moralist arguments on what constitutes worthy of 'fill in the blank'. Instead of coming together to address the screwing all are receiving in areas not even related to bummercare this keeps sheeple conveniently focused. Pay no mind to Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) or any of the other things coming down the pike. Like being able to discuss things here? Might want to consider how TPP will effect that.

Our society is manipulated by mind games to keep us duking it out which renders us unable to act as a cohesive unified group. While we should be supporting rights for all people because who among us is perfect and leads the perfect lifestyle, we draw our lines in the sand and throw spitballs.

The process goes as follows…

Intellectual Warfare involves 11 basic themes.

They are Distraction, Overload, Paralysis, Exhaustion, Deception, Divisive Techniques, Pacification, Deterrence, Provocation, Suggestion and Pressure.

But we fall for it every time don't we?

A few things about nicotine. It is extremely addictive in cigarettes because of the MAOI's reinforcing the addiction and making it stronger than it would be by itself. That and the fact that it goes straight to your brain with the added ammonia. Nicotine is not a horrible substance though, and the addictiveness by itself is on par with caffeine. Research is showing it may prevent Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, it improves cognitive function and memory (ADHD), helps people with ulcerative colitis, depression, schizophrenia, etc...to name a few. Screw all these people, right?

The anti-smoking crusade has now turned into the anti-nicotine crusade, which is ignorant and against the best interest of public health. Obviously not everyone could benefit from it, but there are many who can and do. In regards to nicotine and insurance companies, they are also targeting people who have QUIT smoking and are using e-cigs. In some cases, big pharmas solutions are ok while e-cigs are not. Most are just targeting nicotine use so there are no loop-holes.

With all of the positive uses for nicotine, I don't see how anyone could support this madness. This isn't JUST about cigarette smokers, it's about demonizing and taxing the hell out of nicotine use. I'm sure the money is the biggest motivation here, although there are little health warrior foot soldiers who actually think this is about health and we can 'just die already'. Oh wait no, part of it is 'you're making me pay more money for insurance'. Hurr durr, as if they wouldn't charge you just as much even if smoking and obesity wasn't a thing.

An analogy: People smoke basil or some common herb used in food for thousands of years. We get smart and realize that smoking basil is really unhealthy because of the SMOKE. Even though it has a chemical in it that can cure or alleviate many different ailments, we have to BAN it because people have been SMOKING it and SMOKING is unhealthy! We also have to intentionally lie to the public and say that Basil in ANY form is deadly, even in your soup. Does that make sense? Is that reasonable? Hell, does that benefit public health? NO, it doesn't. It's insane and illogical. The only forces at work here are GREED and egotistical idiots who think they are so much better than other people. STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!!

If you support this madness, you really need to take a step back and humble yourself (you aren't better than anyone else). Nicotine is not some evil poison with no benefits and you have no right to tell someone they can't consume nicotine while you sip on your starbucks. Do some actual research on Nicotine and stop acting like you're gods gift to mankind. You're going to die too, and we're all going to get screwed on insurance prices regardless.

Again, even safer alternatives to smoking are being attacked, so do you really think this is about public health? You are deluding yourself if you think that is what this is about. Listen to this video and the facts presented closely. The FDA, ACS, ASH, etc are HARMING public health by demonizing nicotine and supporting quitting methods that have a very high failure rate or are flat out dangerous (chantix). Smokers will be put off by his intro, but you guys should listen to this too.

Smokers are just the first part of the pie. Soon they will go after those other people who don't who don't live a healthy lifestyle

Good! Can't wait. People who lead unhealthy lifestyles are the primary cause for the annual increase in insurance rates.

Then once they've nobbled the smokers, their foot is in the door to impose more ''conditions' to maximise premiums and minimise claims.

Next it could be people who play sports with the higher premiums, then people who do manual work for a living, then people who cross the road, play football with their kids, etc. There is a risk of injury/accident during any physical activity, in fact there are risks of injury just living a normal everyday life.

The door will be open to tax every aspect of your lives, a lifestyle tax. Everything you do increases risk of physical harm and they can force you to pay more for just stepping out your front door if they wanted. Sounds extreme, but if it means they get to hang on to everyone's money and reduce claims, they'll do it.

They need to get their foot in the door first though and smokers have been singled out to pave the way because everybody hates smokers, and there would be little objection to making them pay more.

Obamacare isn't insurance, it's just another tax.

What a great point. Playing sports and being active really puts you at risk for injuring yourself. Especially people who are addicted to exercising. Very unhealthy and bad for your body. We must tax all those dirty scum sub-humans. I'm so sick of paying for their dangerous lifestyle choices.

That's right.

If you don't exercise, sit in a chair all day and eat loads, although you won't break an arm or leg doing this you will be 'taxed' for being unhealthy.

On the other hand, if you live a healthy lifestyle and keep yourself physically fit, or enjoy playing sports, you will be 'taxed' for being a higher than average risk of injury.

They'll sting you if you're good and sting you if you're bad. No escape.

This is why I hate insurance companies, they make their own rules up as they go along to wriggle out of paying out.
