You do realise that the average monkey can operate a bank.

A monkey can also put cars together, do you treat them with as much humility. Our savior was a slave and he wore that badge with honor.

Watch your vitriol. Some people don't have the same privileges as others. Imagine someone who's stuck there who absolutely hates it, simply because they made some mistakes. I know people (yes people) who have done this. They're trying so hard to save for education but on their wages they're stuck.

People need to stop being so cold hearted RIGHT NOW. It's getting sickening. These are human beings you're talking about and they're some of the most bullied, under-appreciated and soul destroyed people you'll ever talk to. They have mostly lost hope in themselves and don't think they're worth anything because people like YOU and others say so.

You all need a massive slice of reality. A LOT of people are in this situation (not to single out Mcd's, ASDA too, Jaguar also) and they hate themselves for it. Get some humility or GTFO.

These people need your help not your vitriol.

MINIMUM WAGE ISN'T MEANT TO BE LIVED OFF OF YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER IDIOTS. YOU DON'T DESERVE MORE MONEY FOR DOING A COMPLETELY MENIAL JOB THAT A TODDLER CAN DO WITH LITTLE OR NO TRAINING.

I completely agree with the idea that the minimum wage is not to be lived off of. Maybe I would do without the demeaning rest of the idea, but your statement, its cool.

Building off of this, though, is the fact that economics dictates that if you increase the pay on the lowest paid individuals the only guarantee is that the cost of living will increase. This increase will, more than likely, be more than the increase given to the workers. The end result being the minimum wage continues to be THE MINIMUM WAGE, but now the workers are even worse off.

The truth is the workers are going to find these jobs more competitive in the hiring process, and all of a sudden you will have McDonald's looking for workers with Bachelors Degrees to man the registers. Sound far-fetched? Many of you are old enough to remember when a college degree wasn't really required for a lot of jobs. My wife was mentioning to me the other day that her job as a nurse is approaching a time in which the hospitals want their nurses to have advanced degrees as a requirement for hiring them.

Maybe, rather than fighting so much for this living wage, which is little more than a grab for votes, they should be concentrating on making education a priority again and returning the country to a position of relevance in innovation. This would be better than all the petty garbage about keeping troops in Afghanistan or continued drone strikes, or any number of things keeping us divided.

Just because those jobs aren't meant to be lived off of, doesn't mean they aren't. Some people take what they can get; sometimes they get stuck in a dead-end job because the job market doesn't hold much for high-school graduates without some sort of degree or experience.

If you work minimum wage you need at least one other job to compliment that

Which is usually another minimum wage job - again, someone taking what is available; oftentimes something that is degrading and leads nowhere, because it requires no secondary education. A single parent, working two jobs to provide for his/her family doesn't necessarily have the money or time to further their education so, as stated above, they get stuck in a rut...and end up working menial, minimum wage jobs for years. Their "resume", as the years pass, becomes filled with a lot of "turn around" jobs, because those jobs are what's available, what pays, what has benefits. It's unfortunate, but sometimes, for a struggling single parent, furthering their education isn't a viable option .

Because you haven't completed the training required to get a better job

College is expensive - scholarships and grants are getting harder to come by, and not every job in retail leads to a climb up the ladder.

I agree that minimum wage jobs aren't ideal; nor are they meant to take care of a family. Unfortunately, some people will never have a better option, or aren't qualified when that better option comes around.

Where exactly are these workers suppose to be advancing to? Even the college educated are finding it very hard to find a decent job. Many of them are working minimum wage jobs, jobs that kids should have instead. If everyone making minimum wage all of sudden decided to get educated to get a better job, those better jobs still wouldn't exist. The first step in solving a problem is identifying the cause and the cause is a shortage of good jobs and a minimum wage that has not come close to keeping up with the cost of living.

You mentioned nursing. Advance degree not required here. They just hire nurses aides, work them free for their CNA, then employ them at half the pay ( and none of the education) of an RN or LPN. On a floor of 40 patients youll have 4 RNs and the rest barely educated cheap CNAs. Sub par care at premium prices. Nice...

Knowing fast food restaurants, I'm surprised they didn't recommend employees putting their food on the floor for five seconds first, so as to decrease their appetites - or, simply put up a list of all the GMO ingredients/chemicals/insect parts that goes into their pink slime. That should ensure that employees don't eat their profits!

Long, long ago I worked in a Burger King during summers when I was in college. I remember never getting free food, and having to pay more than 50% of cost for one burger (or fish or chicken sandwich), one drink, and one small fry - *if* you worked a full six-hour or longer shift that required a lunch break. You couldn't get the deal otherwise. Any food left over at the end of the night actually went as a demerit against your record, as you were not supposed to have anything left at the end of the shift to get rid of.

I also recall that, even then, their products had lots of food-like substance that wasn't food - for example, their 'shakes' couldn't legally be called 'milk shakes', just 'shakes' - because they were made mostly of SEAWEED. I never had another 'shake' after reading that...

As for people working those jobs deserving what they get because they 'didn't work hard enough to deserve more'...I call BS on that. I had a bachelor's degree in genetics, and it was still the only job that was available. The manager had a Master's degree in finance. Sometimes, all that matters is who you know, not WHAT you know. Unfortunately.

Meh, that's cool

McDonald's should pay enough to not get their freezers ransacked by employees.

If you don't have a full fridge while working at McD's well, what can I say...

Break your food "into pieces"?

I don't get it.

As opposed to what, stuffing an entire "food" into your mouth all at once?

Nope, still not getting it.

And what exactly does one break food with? I'm not sure I've ever broken food, except for maybe that weird tasting hard candy that comes with it's own hammer.

It's for people that are swallowing their food whole.

It gets ugly when people only have the money for one hamburger, then swallow it whole leaving the person starving.

If a person where to take that hamburger and break it into 10,000 equal parts, then slowly chew their food they will have enough food actually for 3 years.

Scientifically this is brilliant.

McDonald's is back on the menu for me, they really do care.

Just be glad they give you a lunch time period. If they could they would just keep you working through the entire shift with no breaks whatsoever.

I personally think you're giving their worth 23 cents too many.

McDonald's is a low intelligence, minimum wage job. People need to get a grip. If you want more money then get a job that is geared toward raising a family not one geared toward housewives needing something to do when the kids are at school and an after school job for teenagers.

I am so sick of people griping about Mcdonalds... if you don't like the pay just quit and get another job that pays what you want. That is called freedom... if you don't want then don't work there.

So people who have a lower intelligence deserve a wage where they can not afford a family?
I guess you say the same about any minimal wage job eh?
Same goes for healthcare workers? people who look after old folk like your grandad and grandma? don't they deserve a living wage? people who do this type of work not because of money but because they feel the need to help folk?.
I look after people with LD and get just above the minimal wage in the UK (10p ph more) I do it because it feels like the right job for me...work up the ladder you say? what ladder is that then? the ladder just isn't there.
When I got the job 700 people applied for 2 positions, that is how bad it is at the moment.
We have a person who has a psychology degree and 3 with various other degrees working as support workers...the work just isn't about for them.
If companies payed a living wage people would not have to be subsidized by government handouts coming from your taxes.
I respect anyone who does any job well and If they do that job well they deserve a living wage.
Sorry we are all cogs in the wheel and you just sound like an elitist sob to me.

People who take a job that pays minimum wage.. like the after school type that McDonald's is... deserve what the job pays... period. If they don't want a minimum wage, don't apply for a job that has no skill needed and only pays minimum wage.

Using the healthcare field as some kind of an argument, which pays more because it is skilled labor... has nothing to do with minimum wage jobs... scrubsmag.com...

Whats more... your talking about the UK.. and I am talking about the USA.. here, there are more healthcare jobs available, than there are people to take them!

Told you... there are PLENTY of healthcare jobs here.. the pay is good and overtime is guaranteed because there aren't enough people to fill the positions available...

People want to complain about McDonalds, but with a little time and effort people CAN make more in this country... they simply choose not to, and to me it is ridiculous!

The McDonalds corporation does not set the wages of the people serving their food, that is done by the franchise owners.
