I am not afraid of drones. I am afraid of the misuse drones will be put to doing.

How is this different than a piloted a/c? Drones usually take at least one less person to be convinced to participate in the misuse. Other than that, no difference, as I am just as concerned about the misuse of the police helicopter with the FLIR.

I don't think any logical person would disagree with the law of human nature that the frequency of wrongful actions increase when they become easier to commit.

You can Hack into a Drone and take over it's Controls.
How else does the Govt control the Drone? That's how you can gain control.
All wireless.

The only "hacking" of any UAV has been to spoof the GPS and cause it to think it was somewhere else. There has not been a total take over of one yet.

My understanding and If I recall correctly IRAN was able to hack the US drone that they brought down. Hence it was in such good condition.

In order for them to do this via spoofing the gps system:
Wouldn't the drone need to be configured to automatically land based on coordinates , and Iran would need to know those coordinates as well. Which is possible , but I'm no drone export.

Also spoofing the gps system might not be a minor threat depending how the drones work their fail safes.

If drones can attack based on gps coordinates, and If you are able to spoof the GPS:

Then it might be possible to make the drone THINK its over a well known prime target when in reality its over friendly airspace. Hence firing at the wrong location or crashing in friendly territory. Like I said I'm no drone specialist but I do know a little about software exploits.

an Iranian military official quoted on Iranian state television claimed that an Iranian military cyber-warfare unit "managed to take over controls of the drone and bring it down," the Washington Post's Thomas Erdbrink noted.

The United States Air Force acknowledged in October that a virus had infected the computer system at Creech Air Force base in Nevada that remotely operates Predator and Reaper drones. And in 2009, an Iraqi insurgent hacked into a U.S. drone down-link, which is not usually encrypted, cyber security expert James Lewis, a former Reagan administration official with the Center for Strategic and Institutional Studies, told Yahoo News last month.

Ok I'll bite,

Why is the govt going to waste money putting drones in your bloodstream?

I, for one, welcome our new drone overlords.

It's great business for me, as a MIC member. And it opens up a lot of other possibilities. For example, a home drone detector.

And when there are enough drones about that no one really knows whose is which, it opens up the possibility for me to make my own drones, and start doing evil deeds.

I would post an example, but it would possibly be actionable. Use your imagination.

I think drones are a wonderful idea and the technology can help us in many ways. From finding fires in the wilderness before they break out to search and rescue missions, particularly with the Coast Guard who could cover infinitely more area with drones than with a helicopter.

And a personal issue, they could be of tremendous help during an Amber Alert by fairly quickly covering a large area where the vehicle with an abducted child could be found.

Military Snipers sometimes border on murderers, but they do, on occasion, have a chance of being killed, captured, or wounded.

Killing strangers from a play-station 10K miles away is just plain murder--even if "ordered" to do so.

So you don't like artillery either than I take it?

Or ships that shoot missiles onto land.

Or any type of long range weaponry?

That's just dumb.

And then you get to shower up and go home and see the wife and kids every night. What's not to like?

You're missin the point, SpookyBelle.

Artillery gunners, bomber pilots, and sailors on warships are also in range of similar weapons by the other side. They are in the field of combat and are in harm's way.

The desk jockey back in the states isn't. If one's life is not remotely in danger, and you are killing people you don't know and whose activities you are only guessing--then that is an entirely different thing from combat. It is murder by definition.

the most vicious murderers are usually the most cowardly.
all those women and children murdered by drones were no accident.

From what I've been able to piece together, using white world open source material, it went into a holding pattern after getting confused and eventually crashed into the desert, where they recovered it.

So? If a guy a block down the street suddenly grabs my wife coming out of a store and whips out a knife to kill her and I use my considerable skill with a .45 to "remotely" kill him, (remember, I'm a block away and in no danger,) does that make me a murderer? If the drone driver is defending other troops or civilians from mortal danger, what's the difference?

Only if they can't help it - the ideal soldier's position is somewhere you can kill the other guy and not vice versa - "chivalry" be buggered - you want longer range, more explosives, heavier armour - and then you STILL want to ambush him without him knowing you were there!

The whole of military progress has been about trying to kill the other guy without him being able to kill you - right from when shields were first invented!!

That is plausible via sending mixed gps signal, but I'm a bit surprised how well the exterior of the drone was from the pictures I saw. I would have expected it to either self destruct or had some what of a rough landing if not crash.

Although i can see a safe landing scenario as well being executed by GPS spoofing, by making it think its over friendly territory as I mentioned before.

However in order for that to happen Iran would either have to know of the gps safe landing areas. Or the drone uses logic that when confused and or running low on fuel and over friendly territory then initiate landing procedures.

Regardless, GPS spoofing is not a minor threat. The fact that they can make it think its not where it is is huge depending on the drone algorithms.

Having weaponized drones running all over the US can allow for terrorists to exploit the gps weakness in the drones. They could give it a wrong location and a wrong elevation to get it to crash instead of safely land like the one that was captured by Iran.

At-least that is a potential threat I see. I also see a threat on the hardware if it contains foreign manufactured electronic components but that is for another thread.

I read that a few weeks ago, it was one of the reasons I wrote this thread actually. That and because some people think drones are magical are can do all sorts of crazy stuff lol

Stealth I can't thank you enough for making this thread, I was thinking of doing the same but never got round to it. A pet hate of mine on ats (as well as prediction thread, chemtrails and religion) is the paranoia of people and drones. I'm sick of it.

My job is almost like a ground based UAV, I have up to 160 cameras in my superstore/supermarket. Now when we people hear/see this they say something along the lines of, ' oh my god we get followed everywhere these days the government can spy on us blah blah blah'
The truth is although I have 160 cameras I can only view And operate ONE at a time, and I can only have 32 recording on our DVR. So yes if you go into my shop you will see all the cameras but it doesn't mean they are ALL watching you.

Now where does this relate to drones ? As far as I know a drone has one camera, I could be wrong. I know it's not going to have hundreds. So I don't see how people when they see a drone flying round their city they automatically think it's spying on THEM as if they are the only person in that city it's absolutely absurd. And even if they can see the drone why do people think that drone is looking at them.
Say you see a drone and you are on it's starboard side what's to say the camera is viewing something on its port side.

Another thing let's take New York for example, a quick google there is 8.3 million people living there. Out of all those millions, if someone saw a drone why do they think it's watching them.

And for what reason would they want to fly a drone around to spy on us when we are working or washing our cars or playing in our yards, why do people think they are so special they the drone is viewing them. I bet half the people that scream drone don't cause a fuss when they see a police helicopter over the edge.

My last point is .. Although they are unmanned they are not self controlling there is someone sitting at a screen controlling it. So they still need man power. So when someone says there is going to be a mass drone program it makes me laugh. Even if one operate has access to 5 or 10 drones the operator can only operate ONE at a time. Same principle as my cameras at work .. I have 160 but can only operate ONE at a time. Oh one more point .. If in occupied watching a person in my store that's it no one else is being ACTIVELY monitored

I swear the paranoia in removing more free will from people than the government. If you let things like this bother you and you spend the rest of your time hiding then you are a prisoner of you own paranoia. Just get outside and enjoy life

Finally this has been said plenty of times by others, if you have nothing to hide why worry. Let the drone operators watch you and waste your time. But there is probably higher profile targets out there than your average civilian

Rant over im open to questions/criticism

And to think, technology will only get better.

That means it will become more powerful as each day passes.

So the real problem we must deal with is the "Hearts of Man", because that is what will decide how such tools are used and for what purposes.

true indeed and the hearts of man these days, have become hardened. just reading this morning how 9 were killed in Pakistan, one being a commander, but they failed to mention the other 8 which includes hundreds of innocent victims. if our corrupt government thinks it's okay to kill several innocents for each supposed terrorist, what does that say for them? yeah they need replacing.

well one would have to actually read my statement when i stated there was a drone strike that killed 9 and one being a suspected taliban leader, the other 8 they fail to mention. as far as how many innocent victims drones have killed, heck you can search and find hundreds of reports in many areas of the world.

here is a fresh article now.
