They would be sending them back to the states they came from. But I guess like those states you don't have a problem with them being dumped on Hawaii. Let them deal with them right?

So let me see if I have this right...

Other states dump their homeless and psych patients on Hawaii, who is then horrible for not spending a ton of money building shelters and just accepting the fact that they're the homeless dumping ground for the US? That's logic for you.

Are other states dumping their homeless on Hawaii? Please provide some source for that?

My mother was a psych nurse when we lived out there. They lost count of the number of patients brought in on a 72 hour hold with their ticket stub still uh their pocket, having arrived less than a week prior.

Thus plan is not just shipping them back however. It would require then to have family willing to help them.

Only 42% of homeless are from Hawaii. It was a big deal when I lived there. I'll try to find the articles about it web I'm not on my phone.

Hawaii, on the other hand, is garnering a reputation for a less-than-compassionate approach to its homeless population, and it’s not just because of Brower. It’s got the highest rate of homelessness in the country, but rather than build more shelters or offer more services for the poor, lawmakers approved $100,000 over the next two years to offer one-way flights off the islands to any of the state’s estimated 17,000 homeless persons.

Doesn't say to only people that might have been sent there from elsewhere in the country. It says the offer is for any of them. I am sure a great chunk of homeless are actually from there. So they would be doing the same thing that you are annoyed at other states for doing. Shuffling people around like pokemon cards just seems absurd to me.

If I had to bum around somewhere I would probably choose there too, or maybe Az. somewhere with no harsh winter. I heard it's really pretty there too. The whole volcano stuff scares the crap out of me though lol.

Have you taken the time to read the bill? It's for homeless not from Hawaii (56% of the homeless population is NOT from Hawaii), and send then back to where they're from IF they have family willing to help.

No I haven't read the bill. This article makes it seem I have inserted my foot into my mouth this time.

There are many reasons why homelessness is so pervasive in Hawaii. It’s an expensive state to live in. It’s not easy to leave. There isn’t much affordable housing.

Viewed in the most charitable light, one-way flights allow homeless people who currently live in Hawaii but have a family or better job opportunities on the mainland to be able to move. Viewed more cynically, officials in Hawaii will use this initiative to coerce homeless persons into leaving, freeing the state from any further obligations to help them.

The state Department of Human Services will administer the program, but officials there worry that the program could wind up being abused by those not currently living in Hawaii. “We remain concerned this program is an invitation to purchase a one-way ticket to Hawaii with a guaranteed return flight home,” said Kayla Rosenfeld, the department’s spokeswoman.

There are just a few eligibility restrictions. In order to get a free one-way ticket, a person must be participating in the program for the first time and swear he or she is doing so voluntarily. The problem is that in many cities that have implemented similar programs, like New York, San Francisco, and Baton Rouge, “voluntary” doesn’t always mean voluntary, particularly when a city’s police department gets involved. When a homeless person has a run-in with the law, they are often presented with a choice: go to jail or “volunteer” for a one-way ticket. In addition, there is little verification that the person using the one-way ticket will have any better opportunity at their destination, because at that point Hawaii has shed its responsibility for providing care and services.

That is what I get for only listening to the first article I suppose. Although this one also does not link the actual bill either to look at myself.

"I want to do something practical..." he says.

Really? No you don't. And how often are you out there smashing up shopping carts WITHOUT a camera in your face? What's that? Never? That's what I thought.

Get back to your office and do some paperwork you idiot government stooge before someone takes a sledgehammer to you scrotum.

This person is an embarrassment to any local, state, or federal representative.....
Your expected to set an example and absolutely not be an embarrassment to the office in which you hold.
His actions are LOOPY regardless of just how bad the homeless situation is....
When he's asked what he did to make things better, is he really going to be able to say "I smashed shipping carts"?

And I'm not by any means suggesting that he's not a total ass. I'm simply saying that I understand the frustration having lived there so long and watching other states dump their homeless on Hawaii.

Like I said what he's doing is absolutely the worst possible way to do anything.

Well remind me not to be homeless in Hawaii.

Granted it's a beautiful place that I want to visit one day, but with people like him about, no thank you!

good for him. NOT

this is ether fake in that these are not homeless peoples carts but carts that were supplied for show.

or the ACLU will likely sue him on behalf of the homeless person.

if i was a lawyer belonging to the other political party i would be happy to volunteer my services to the homeless person just for suing this AH state rep.

STFU man, you're going to give internet people ideas on how to get a free vacation to Hawaii.

eggman90
He just cemented not ever getting elected anywhere ever again.

From the article at thinkprogress.org...

Uncontent to just destroy homeless people’s items, Brower is also on a mission to wake those he finds sleeping and tell them to sleep somewhere else. “If someone is sleeping at night on the bus stop, I don’t do anything, but if they are sleeping during the day, I’ll walk up and say, ‘Get your ass moving,’” he said.

What a heartless scummer.

One has to wonder why he is out walking around instead of behind some desk in the first place...

Interesting logic here.

Let's apply it to cars.

Someone steals a car so the state reps runs around smashing cars up too? smh

Those carts belong to stores and this a-hole is breaking the law.

I don't see how any of this helps the situations, flawed logic for sure.

What is the prerequisite to be a politicians these days?

See, you don't disagree with Conservatives on everything.
His actions do nothing but make life harder for people on the edge.
If he really wanted to help I'd bet he has an extra bedroom or 2.

I once picked up a guy hitchhiking on Christmas eve in zero degree weather.
He said he had nowhere to go.
He spent the holidays with me and my family and he found a job about a week later.

I'd like to believe there's plenty of common ground between progressives and conservatives.

What recklessness. Does he wake them up with the hammer on his shoulder? He should be careful he doesn't wake someone in the midst of a psychotic episode/drug trip and be seen as some kind of other, worse monster and get hobo-knifed.

Who cleans it up? City workers. He is doing his part in job creation for the 'economy'.

If you lived on a tropical island, why not just build a hut/shack on the beach? If a storm comes up, head into town and go to Walmart for the day. Do Hawaiian Walmarts allow RVs as well?
