Boeing formally launched the 777X program at the Dubai airshow today. Four customers have a firm order for 259 aircraft with options for more. Boeing is offering the 777-9X with 400 seats, the 777-8X which is longer ranged, and the 777X freighter.

Customers and numbers:

Emirates -150 firm, 50 options
Etihad - 25, first 777-8X order
Qatar - letter of intent for 50
Lufthansa - 34, placed in September as long as program launched.

That's a lot of planes.....too bad they won't be built in my state.

They laid out the schedule for the airframe. Top level design by the end of 2014, with design locked and cleaned up by 2015 into 2016. Part production begins in 2017, with first flight by 2019, and service entry in 2020.

The GE9X will be finalized in 2015, with ground testing in 2016, first flight in 2017, certification by 2018. It will have a 10% lower fuel burn than the GE90-115B that is on the 777-300ER, and 5% lower than the Trent XWB on the A350.
