Thousands rally in Australia against climate change

I did a haphazard search for this story, so I apologize if this has already been posted.

Tens of thousand of Australians have turned out for climate change rallies across the nation, calling on the Abbott Government to keep the carbon tax.

Organisers say about 60,000 participated at the rallies, which were held in capital cities and more than 130 towns and regional centres.

Emergency workers played a significant role in warning about the dangers of unchecked global warming, while Labor and Greens politicians, along with climate scientists, also participated.

abc.net.au

My favorite part of the article was this comment directed at the climate change deniers:

"There is no sceptic at the end of a fire hose," said Peter Marshall, secretary of the United Firefighters Union.

And here's another comment from a fellow fiery:

In Brisbane, where an estimated 4,000 people came together, firefighter Dean McNulty spoke of the huge concern climate change posed to his colleagues, who battle natural disasters from the front line.

"To firefighters, it is not just numbers and statistics, it is very real."

First and foremost I congratulate all those who participated. Climate changed has happened before and will happen again, only this time our activities will accelerate the process.

The end of the Ice age, the Permian extinction, these events may have taken an age to have an effect, but the end results were nothing less than catastrophic. But what's different this time is that billions of people are making a bad situation worse with the aid of fossil fuels, which was not a problem in the ice age. Climate change could be a slow agonizing disaster-which is unfathomable in our fast paced world where everything is expected to happen overnight.

However I don't believe a tax is the answer. There is a number of people out there with the funds and resources to make alternative energies the norm, but sadly these people only use their money to make more money. Something needs to be done, but we're going to need everybody on board.

I will leave you with an image from the source that perfectly sums up the situation.

Where I live the climate changes every season and has since I was a kid and I hope it keeps changing .I don't know much about science but have picked up on some of the deception being used in their rhetoric . Global warming .co2 the cause .a very small percentage of our world is co2 but is the # 1 culprit ? They want to tax the crap out of us ..why don't these people like Gore and his elk park the fossil burning cars planes and shut the power off to the heat get a good blanket and watch the weather . Its getting cooler and has been for the past few years .There are less hurricanes making land fall .What are we missing while we are looking at this co2 thing . Its a shell game they are playing on us .

There are and have been people living where its hot and where its cold . We can adapt and if you really think that the sea is going to rise and flood you out move ..Big Al is always looking for beach front property to invest in I hear ..

LOL

These jokers are going to be burning fuel oil like there's no tomorrow ... if the solar maximum doesn't kick into gear ... and we go into a mini-ice age. I think if they keep up with their nonsense they should be permanently restricted to half rations.

There are two things that can have such a dramatic effect on the planet's climate.
#1 The sun
#2 Mother nature

Jaw hits the deck. Shake of the head. Oh dear where do I start. You know what if you don't know the difference between climate and weather what's the point in trying to explain.

Firstly, There is no doubt that climate change can be natural. What I'm trying to say is that our actions will have an unnatural effect on the environment. Let me use a smoker as a metaphor; the smoker can quit now and delay the inevitable, or he can continue smoking and shed years from his life.

Secondly, it's easier to blame terrestrial or celestial catastrophes rather then taking responsibility. What happens if Yellowstone doesn't erupt for the next thousand years? What if the sun doesn't throw out any mega CME's? with mankinds' help, climate change could wipe out the population long before these doom porn scenarios ever take place.

S&F. Great thread. You go Australia! Love the poster: "THERE IS NO PLANET B".

Let's take our world back from gross polluters.

Natural or not (or both?) - we're bound to finally realize sooner or later that we're going to have to change one of two things (if not both): How we live or where we live. Most likely later, IMO.

Ashamed to be an Aussie today and to share the same soil with these uneducated zombies, ( who actually think of themselves as the World's intellectuals) . I Think most people over 40 may remember this thing called weather.

I want these clowns to answer this hypothetical........

There is now a global carbon tax, managed by the UN. The tax is so high that all the Money in the World has been collected and now sits in a vault under the UN building.

Now what ? How does that Money fix the planet ? How does it stop fire, flooding, rain falling, snow falling, wind blowing. lightening? Hot, Cold

Well any of it ?

So what is the benifit of this tax ? WHO BENIFITS from this TAX.

Could always do what Montgomery Burns did on the Simpsons:

Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One)

simpsons.wikia.com...(Part_One)
simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Who_Shot_Mr._Burns%3F_(Part_One)

―Mr. Burns
“Ever since the beginning of time, man has yearned to destroy the sun. I shall do the next best thing: block it out.”

The Simpsons: Who Shot Mr. Burns wikipedia reference:

Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Shot_Mr._Burns%3F
en.wikipedia.org...

Burns then reveals to Smithers his grandest scheme: the construction of a giant, movable disk that will permanently block out the sun in Springfield, forcing the residents to continuously use the electricity from his power plant. A horrified Smithers finally stands up to Burns, insisting that he has gone too far, but Burns just fires him in response. Later, Homer sneaks into Burns' office and spray paints his name on the wall. Burns catches him in the act, but still does not recognize him, and in a rage Homer attacks him. Homer is hauled away by security. All the citizens affected due to Burns' mad schemes, including Homer and even Smithers, swear revenge on him.

Mmmm..yes people with good intentions, but to quote a person who voluntarily battles bushfires, to use as emotional effect...sheesh.

Fires have been around Longer than Humans...Unless the Earth is completely covered in water, there will always be fires.

Australia contributes about .000001% of the World Humans pollution, it also has VAST HUGE areas of vegetation, be they rainforests, or shrubs in the desert, that absorb that Bad Co2, and produce life giving (in moderation) Oxygen. Note, we also do Not have any active Volcanoes, so we produce even Less pollution than county's that do.

As Ive said before, the F.requent A.tmospheric R.ectal T.urblenceS. of the 1.3 BILLION people in China, would create more pollution on Earth in one day, than all the people, industry, transport, power stations etc in Australia in that same day. There is a reason nearly everybody in Chinese cities wears gas masks....any you all thought it was because of exhaust pollution....

Just how do people who hold these rallies think they will stop a thunderstorm? or a hurricane? or the snow falling? or a flash flood? or an earthquake? or a bushfire? or stop jets streams wandering around? or stop hot/cold air masses coming and going? yep, beats me!

Exactly. This is why when I see a house fire I throw petrol on it rather than water. It's going to burn rite so what difference does it make?
