I was just thinking how cumbersome it would be because of all the moving parts and the all nooks and crannies foreign materials can get into.

Then here you guys are wanting to ram a foreign body into it and put gunk all over the thing

Didn't even give a thought to all the nipping you would be getting

Yes, tactile sensation is profound. So is the solution:

Programmable Matter

"As humans, we have evolved to interact physically with our environments, but in the 21st century, we're missing out on all of this tactile sensation that is meant to guide us, limit us, and make us feel more connected," he says. "In the transition to purely digital interfaces, something profound has been lost."

The solution is programmable matter...

S&F& holy wow

I love that I get to grow up in this era.

Never a dull moment. Exciting. Frightening. Always interesting.

I dont like it at all.
Is retardly limited, rudimentary, a waste of 2013 technology, an expensive toy, a total imitation of a 3d screen, a compilation of sensors with pistons and lcd surfaces with a rather simplistic software.

Is insulting!

And i dont want to be censored so i wont put my thoughts in words but still....

How very short-sighted of you.

Yeah, it's a "toy", now... while the technology is being developed.

Nevermind the advancements / benefits that could be realized in the future - like perhaps top-notch medical (even surgical) attention from halfway across the world... virtually. Or, military personnel or businessperson on extended travel that wants to 'hold' their child. That's just off the top of my head - the applications could be limitless.

Thanks for the "short-sighted" !

I still stand for my statements!
They could do alot better than translate movements to some pistons !
You think thats MIT-representative?
If you look at the gaming consoles that are FOR KIDS on the market from seven years, imagine what advanced research should look like!
Its just that they wont say it out loud

They keep it there for DARPA and BAE and EADS and so on.... dont be fooled by the glass beads they offer you !

Very cool yet somewhat simplistic.

How cool would it be to build a house like that. Oh wait I want to add a wall remove a wall , etc. Endless configurations.

Awesome idea - You could have rooms that appear and disappear, tables and chairs that come up from the floor. If you allow walls to come up from the floor and down from ceiling, then you could have windows, even sliding doors.

Hope phones are like that soon, it'll make choking that unhelpful operator a lot easier!

Choking the operator will come second.

Sticking one's 'equipment' in there on the other hand, has probably already been tried.

I'm sure a lot of us had this idea, and others, years ago but didn't have the money to make it real. Fiber optics and a skin will be nice additions.
