Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia is developing a new type of nuclear missile unlike those of any other country. Russia had previously stated that they are in development on a type of missile that would make the missile defense shield developed by the US obsolete.

Speaking at a meeting of the Armed Forces' leadership, Putin reportedly said that Russia is researching and successfully testing new nuclear missile systems.

"I am sure that ... they will be put in service within the next few years and, what is more, they will be developments of the kind that other nuclear powers do not and will not have," Putin was quoted as saying by the ITAR-Tass news agency.

Putin reportedly said: "International terrorism is one of the major threats for Russia. We understand as soon as we ignore such components of our defense as a nuclear and missile shield, other threats may occur."

While relations between the US and Russia are supposed to be much better then during the Cold War, missile technology development programs such as these could well lead to yet another arms race. Russia states that their programs are a result of the increased threat of International terrorism.

What is unclear to me from the article is if the advancements are solely missile systems, or if they also include a new nuclear weapon technology.

Now,, we are going to see many countries developing new weapon systems,,,all under the excuse of protecting themselves from "Terrorism". This is a new arms race,,has been for the past few years. The U.S have been actively developing many new technologys for "The war on Terror",now russia, then whoever else wants to..jezzz I know this has been shaping up for a while. When the soviet empire fell, It diddnt really fall like people thought. Russia still has alot of money for its military, and just think about the buisness "bloc" its building between itself, china, brazil, and another one i fail to rember.. To boot they love to export there weapons just like the U.S does

"Hey everybody! Look at us, we're developing new nuclear weapons!"

Okay. So. Why would someone make a statement like this? My theory is not to rattle the cages of the major world powers but moreso as a deterent force to those who aren't keeping up with the times. My guess is the newly nuclear countries coming about such as Pakistan, Iran, and former Soviet block nations. Radical Islam Militants couldn't care less if they die. In fact, it's their mission.

"You think America was a bad arse, wait until you see us!"

Hehe, alright. Russia, you're the new leader in nuke warfare, just never use them, okay? How much can you sell bragging rights for to help the economy? Nothing.

Thats exactly what I think.

It seems the Cold war is heating up once again.

The US is spending billions to make the ICBM threat no more, so for Russia to keep an edge on the US they develop a faster ICBM that the US missile shield might be able to detect but the missile we will be firing at it are doubtful to strike it in flight.

I wonder if they will also be rocket powered or if there something more exotic like a Screamjet engine.

So I dont think this missile is to "scare" 3rd world countries, it was built with one purpose in mind Do Not Let The US Become Invincible.

I dont like Russia (which seems to be falling back into its old comunist ways) having these but I at least hope that they dont start selling them to anybody with money (like they do with their current tech).

I think this is probably correct. The Russians do not want their high tech toys to seem to be less high tech then the US's new toys. So they announce plans to develop new missiles that can evade our missile shield systems. They announce a new nuclear missile, with sketchy details, but "definitely better then anyone else's".

What it all boils down to, IMO, is hopefully no one will ever use their new toys.

You are correct. I think the new missile has counter measures and the re-entry vehicle may have plasma stealthing (don't have a linkmind you) just my thoughts on the matter. In real terms its a paper tiger:

DO they have the money?
And they already have more than enuf missiles to saturate the defeces as it is. THe missile shield is intended to counter a launch from a rouge state not a major nuclear power.

It's nice to know they have money to waste on such projects.

Remind me again how much we pay them in aid per year?

Governments change, the lies stay the same.

There will always be military competition between countries.. especially USA and Russia.. as it has been since the Cold War and beyond.

Not sure how nuke missiles are useful against small scale terrorist groups as it usually is.

While Russia isn't exactly the military power house it was 20 years ago, it's still not a small enough country to be picked on, and named as a member of the Axis of Evil.
But they do have one of the prerequisites, the same one that got Iraq and Iran on the list.

WHY?
The USA should cut off any financial/humanitarian aid to ANY country that is building WMD's
if they can build new nukes, they can feed their own people!!!!!!

Russia, NK, Most of Africa, and Israel...
you can now buy your own sandwich...

Perhaps now people will realize the true intentions of Russia.... Their plan against the U.S. has not changed much since the 1950s.... While everyone was bashing the U.S. for trying to build a "defense missile system," Russia already had their own, which they upgraded in 2003, not only that but both Russia and China keep building their armaments like there is no tomorrow...

Many countries in the world want the U.S. disarmed, yet they don't say crap about what other countries like Russia and China are doing....

I can't understand how people can't see that these "socialist" and "communist" countries that keep bashing at the U.S. just want to give a bad image and spread anti-U.S. propaganda to get us to disarm.
While "communist" countries keep building their armaments.... The plan has worked so well that many "liberal" countries are also helping spread the anti-U.S. propaganda.... If most Americans don't fall victims to this same propaganda, and neither does our government.....the gloves will be off pretty soon...

Even democrats/liberals and other third parties continue adopting socialist/communist ideals and spreading them in the U.S....our way of life is being assaulted on all fronts....under the disguise of "liberalism"....

Clinton will surely help in the disarmament of the U.S. if he is elected as Secretary General of the U.N..... The U.N. agenda of disarmament does fit with his intentions of trying to disarm the U.S. citizens.... so he will fit in nicely in the U.N.

I do wonder why is it that very few people seem to notice that the U.N. never bashes countries like China and Russia for continuing their armament race...yet they seem hell bend on disarming "only" the U.S.A...and of course Israel...

OMG I don't believe I just read this.

Kindly provide a link demonstrating that Russia did not obey the regulations set in the Treaty that the US chose to cancel.

not only that but both Russia and China keep building their armaments like there is no tomorrow...

I think spending some more time reading would be good for you. A lot of Russian missiles, including more modern kind, were destroyed under the terms of the START II treaty. A lot. The location of mobile launch facilities were fixed and announced.

That's Gorbachev's giveaways for you. The guy should be tried for high treason.

Many countries in the world want the U.S. disarmed, yet they don't say crap about what other countries like Russia and China are doing....

That's coz the US Army is the single most powerful fighting force in the wolrd by a long shot. Which makes this world unipolar.

Another stream of confused consciosness here... ^

What socialist countries? China isn't quite socialist anymore, and Russia is the most brazen capitalist country on this planet.

While "communist" countries keep building their armaments...

Check their military spending per capita, please. They are essentially disarmed in the face of US.

Even democrats/liberals and other third parties continue adopting socialist/communist ideals and spreading them in the U.S....our way of life is being assaulted on all fronts....under the disguise of "liberalism"....

Like how? With Patriot Act? With right wing radicals running the show?

As they said in the "Dune" novel, you are being mighty paranoid.

Another story on this topic has provided some additional information on Russia's weapons systems that they are developing. Still little information is available about the nuclear missile that Putin earlier mentioned.

news.yahoo.com
Putin failed to specify what type of complex he was referring to, but Russia has been seeking to upgrade its nuclear arsenal after the United States announced plans in 2001 to deploy a missile defense shield in abrogation of its 1972 ABM Treaty with Moscow.

Washington argues its shield would be capable of defending the United States only from attacks from so-called "rogue states" and could not stand up to Russia's massive Soviet-era nuclear arsenal.

However Putin has since mentioned plans for Russia to also develop a similar system along with new types of intercontinental missiles that Moscow claims could penetrate any space shield put up by the United States.

The ITAR-TASS news agency speculated that Putin was referring to the mobile Topol-M missile, which is analogous to the US Minuteman-3 missile and is meant to form the backbone of Russia's future strategic nuclear arsenal.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

It seems they are taking great pains to maintain parity with the US. Instead of allowing their existing missile systems to remain stagnant and become outdated, they continue development of newer system that will meet the needs and challenges of today's high tech combat.

So ummmm..What, your protecting the little guy from the big guy?

Russia is still a major player as well as China will be a future one, But yes, as every one allready knows the US does spend more on military then other countries.
Heres a graph FY05 , its almost laughable.

BUT, when you compare it to the GDP, its not as rediculous as the last graph makes it look.

You can't believe it?...... This article which phreak of nature provided, gives us details of Russia's plans...if you can try to think of the real reason for Russia to develop new nuclear missiles.

News reports have also said Russia is believed to be developing a next-generation heavy nuclear missile that could carry up to 10 nuclear warheads weighing a total of 4.4 tons, compared with the Topol-M's 1.32-ton combat payload.

Topol-Ms have been deployed in silos since 1998. The missiles have a range of about 6,000 miles and reportedly can maneuver in ways that are difficult to detect.

Excerpted from link provided by phreak_of_nature

A 6,000 mile range, and it being a "heavy nuclear missile" exactly who are they planning to use these nuclear missiles against?....unless they plan to totally annihilate terrorist countries...if this is the case i wonder what is worse, the U.S. using it's ground forces to fight terrorists/insurgents, or Russia using these nuclear missiles agaisnt "terrorist/rogue countries?...."

Most of the problems we have with proliferation of nuclear weapons at this moment is because of Russia and China helping "terrorist/rogue countries" acquire nuclear weapons and offensive/defensive missile systems.

An article in today’s Ha’aretz describes the work of a German scientist by the name of Robert Schmucker who has been making a case about the nature of ballistic missile proliferation, one which sounds similar to that so often made here, at Missilethreat.com. Namely, that the real sources of such a problem are less from the spontaneous research programs of rogue states, but rather primarily from the considerable, and perhaps not altogether unconscious, proliferation by China and Russia.

www.missilethreat.com...

As i said, the Russians are saying they are building these missiles against "international terrorism" yet, they are one of those countries that is proliferating nuclear technology to "terrorist/rogue countries"....

According to a report recently presented to the U.S. Congress by U.S. weapons inspector Charles Duelfer, Russian engineers were traveling to Iraq to aid Saddam Hussein’s missile program from 1999 and 2003. Hussein had requested Russian help and missile systems—and in some cases received them. North Korea also helped Iraq develop its Al-Samoud 2 missiles.

Why exactly did the U.S. choose to cancel such treaty?....because Russia already has a missile defense system which not only defends Russia, but all of eastern Europe, and they upgraded last in 2002-2003. Russia has also sold missile defense systems to China...

So, why should Russia, China, and eastern Europe be the only ones to have a missile defense system while Russia and China keep building their armaments?

Russian TMD is intended to contribute to strategic defense. This would be an ABM Treaty violation. The United States government has never charged the Soviet Union or Russia with using TMD in an ABM role.

In 1995, Russian President Boris Yeltsin formally accepted the newest variant of the Moscow ABM system, A-135, into service. A-135 still relies on nucleararmed interceptors (although the nuclear warheads are supposedly not stored on the missiles but in a nearby storage facility). There are two interceptor types, a long-range exoatmospheric interceptor and a medium-range interceptor.

Unlike the United States, which has said that the NMD it will deploy will protect all 50 states, Russia has not publicly clarified how much of Russia’s territory or population is covered by A-135. According to the designer of the Don radar that is a part of the A-135 system, the radar and the system as a whole were designed to be expandable and to cover not just European Russia but areas in Eastern Europe as well.

The State Department imposed sanctions on fourteen firms or individuals today for illicit proliferation, seven of which were on Chinese companies. The Chinese companies were sanctioned for the proliferation of unconventional weapons and missile technology to Iran.

In addition, one Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian companies were also sanctioned, as well as one from North Korea. Each of these entities was charged with selling materials to Iran.

Now let's see the most likely use for Russia's newest nuclear weapon....

Washington (AFP) Feb 6, 2002 - CIA director George Tenet said Wednesday Russia was likely to try to develop the means to counter the United States' planned missile defense system.
"Moscow is likely to pursue a variety of countermeasures and new weapons systems to defeat a deployed US missile defense," Tenet said, although Russian Vladimir Putin has downplayed the impact of the intended US withdrawal from the 1972 ABM treaty.

I think who should be spending more time reading is yourself. Even Russian military defectors, and military defectors from other former Russian territories agree with me. There are quite a few threads on ATS from other members and me that present a lot of information that corroborates what I stated above.

Question from chat room: Does Russia still see the U.S. as an enemy?

Col. Stanislav Lunev: Unfortunately, the Russian government considers the United States as its main potential military adversary. The increase in Russian intelligence activity against America is directly connected to this point of view, and this view is much more popular than it was in the beginning of the '90s.

Question from chat room: How can Russia continue with what I consider deceptive spying and still ask the USA to support it financially?

Col. Stanislav Lunev: It's not Russia itself that is hostile to the United States. The Russian people like America and consider America an example for their democratic reforms and creation of a free market economy. It’s the Russian government that is hostile. This is a government which actually spends all the billions of dollars it receives from the United States on its corrupt Russian elite that have private accounts in Western banks.

The Russian government tries to explain to the Russian people that Russians are living so badly, not because of a corrupted Russian government, but because an enemy would like to destroy Russia like it's already destroyed the former Soviet Union, destroyed Yugoslavia and would like to destroy Mother Russia, too. China is still communist, althou they have adopted capitalism in order for them to make their economy grow, and Russia seems to be on it's way towards being communist again. I actually think Russia never really stopped being communist, and if you read the links i posted above you will find quite a few Russian military defectors who say the same thing.

The countries i was refering to are the European liberals/socialists who keep bashing the U.S. despite what other countries do, which in many cases is 10 times worse than what the U.S. has ever done, yet nothing or very little is done to protest and bash those other countries.
