There are many headwinds to deflation-monster-fighting Abe's plans to bring Japan back from the ledge but perhaps the biggest one is the demographic disaster. As Japan News reports, the decline in Japan's population set another record in 2012 with the number of deaths exceeding births for the sixth year in a row. Records were broken everywhere. The number of babies born in the nation in 2012 fell by 13,705 from the previous year to hit a new low of 1,037,101 and while a total fertility rate of 2.0 children per woman will maintain the population at a stable level. Japan’s rate has continued to fall since dropping below 2.0 in 1975.

Japanese Birth Rate Plunges To Record Low As Death-Rate Hits Record High

Maybe this is a blessing, As the effects of the Fukushima plant spread, less children will be subject to the results. I know a couple of Japanese women, and they seem fine. The reasons for the drop could be more than one...But now more than ever this planet needs to stabilize it's numbers...

To keep population stable (without considering immigration/emigration) women must bear 2.1 children on the average.

Here is a graph of the current reproductive rates in the US by race:

Birth control pills were approved by the FDA for contraceptive use in 1960. By 1965, 6.5 million American women were on the pill.

It is not just Japan, this is happening all over the world. Japan is just leading the trend

Replacement rate is considered 2.1 not one European country is at replacement rate, most are below 1.5

http:/ /epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/statistics_explained/images/e/e8/Total_fertility_rate%2C_1960-2011_%28live_births_per_woman%29.png

In North America, the US is below replacement rate, Canada is way below replacement rate and Mexico is just .01 above replacement rate.

Every country in the entire world has seen a huge decline in birth rates. With every single industrialized country coming in at under 2.1

data.worldbank.org...

In the countries with above replacement rates also have astronomical infant mortality rates.

www.indexmundi.com...

The "powers that be" need a rapid decline in population but don't want to look like it is "man made".

Why does the world need it, environmentalism, NO, but because soon

robots and technology will be eliminating most jobs.

The 3D printer, once perfected will eliminate 3/4 of manufacturing jobs. Already nearly every aerospace item has 3D printed parts. And yes, 3D printed metal parts. The 3D printer will be on best buy shelves within 3 years at a cost lower than most high end computers.

When robots can clean better than humans, manufacture better than humans, then the need for humans to support the "powers that be", then excess human beings are no longer needed for the people who run the world on such a massive scale that we have now

How to achievee this: these are NOT moral judgments, just what I am observing.

Get people so addicted to porn, that real sex becomes nearly impossible, an epidemic even in the US. My husband does a lot of marriage counseling and sees this quite frequently. I have read many studies on just this subject, that repeated and prolonged use of porn leads to impotence with a real woman and disappointment with a real man.

Glamorize and socially sanction and promote homosexuality through saturation in the media TV/Movies. This will reduce the surplus population. It is a rare TV show or movie that does not have at least one very fun, very hip, educated and "enlightened" gay person in it.

Allow misogyny and promote it as cultural sensitivity; ie leave the world cultures alone which oppress women so badly they euthanize and abort female infants; and females would rather kill themselves than marry; and husbands and fathers can kill females at will with no consequences. It is little known that in Iran fathers who love their educated daughters are not forcing them to marry, they too are having a decline in population. One Arabic country is going so far as to actually build a city for women only, no men allowed. This will attract many women whose fathers don't want their daughters beat regularly by spoiled and self-indulgent men with no self control. The spread of Islam will quickly increase the number of females who refuse to marry and their fathers love them enough not to force them to.

Allow and sanction pedophilia (there is a movement afoot to do just that, search other posts and you will find threads on just this subject), this will so terrorize a generation of young people into hating sex that they will choose chastity over relationships

Allow or turn a blind eye to sex selective abortion. It reduces the population faster by ten folds because of the societal preference for male children world wide.

Don't be fooled that this a a phenomenon. It is planned by the leaders of the world to reduce the surplus population that will not be needed in the future.

Obamacare as it is rolling out is sure to cause excess deaths because of the millions of people being thrown out of their insurance plans because they don't meet Obama standards. Also the website is only allowing a handful of people to register each day. Leaving millions more uninsured than before the roll out. Also, there ARE deep rationing plans for seniors which will disallow life extending (saving) procedures if one is above a certain age. Already socialized medicine and Obamcare will/does so limit healthcare to seniors that the senior population will be reduced much faster than before, all in the name of "good" healthcare for all.

Once again let me emphasize, these are NOT MORAL JUDGEMENTS, just observations. Maybe the powers that be are correct, we will need to drastically reduce the surplus population as quickly as possible with the coming of the "star trek" technology that will be on our shelves within 10 years or far less. Maybe these things are the most "painless" ways of reducing the population because if we don't there will be such massive unemployment and poverty that we risk total

I don't see how the extinction of an entire people can be a blessing (...unless they're of the fundamentalist religious kind, of course). Especially given that an ageing population means old minds; old minds means fewer fresh ideas; fewer fresh ideas means a stagnating economy; a stagnating economy means political focus on external scapegoats, oftentimes manifesting in nationalistic fervor... *fast-forward*... China.

The far-reaching ramifications of Japan's depopulation should not be underestimated.

The Native American line is tragic and a scathing indictment of the U.S. treatment of its indigenous population.

As for the rest of us; the fact is, the only demographics with healthy or high birth rates are the Third and the developing World(s) and theocratic nations where contraceptives are disallowed by religious precepts. Not exactly the ingredients for a propitious planetary future...

How is the low birth rate of Amerindians an indictment of their "treatment?" I would think it is more likely an example of free birth-control--but that's just a guess.

The oceans (what are left of them) won't miss the Japanese. As for falling birthrates? There is a song with a line it that goes something like this; "Only stupid people are breeding".

Now I am off to catch up on the last season of Honey boo boo.

Where to start? Japan has over 100 million people on a tiny landmass that includes the most expensive city in the world, and somehow it's a crisis for them to not increase? This proves just how brainwashed most people are by all the growth worship our culture has pushed on us. They will be much better off with less job competition, maybe they won't have to work themselves to death anymore. If you want to know why they're not breeding like rabbits, that's the reason right there.

Also, America's population is still increasing by about a million a year, so don't listen to anyone who tells you that we have some kind of de-population crisis.

This will become worldwide.

Sex is for pleasure now. Not to reproduce. But soon, i believe sex itself will give way to what we're seeing in Japan, where the people are headed towards a sexless society. I've read horrible things from Japan about how the youth see no reason to engage with each other for mating or unions of love.

If you do not believe me, google the words "Japan" and "sexless society". The youth do not want to have sex with each other, or have relationships.

This world has been poisoned. I don't think that this is the way we are supposed to be.

You drastically missed the area where humans the globe over must turn. It certainly is not any of the jokingly? avenues you mentioned.

The goal is to turn inward. As of right now, jobs, working with and for material items, are disappearing, changing many aspects of society and culture. Nothing looms in the foreseeable future to replace them . Materialism itself will become a bad word, as the surviving human race turns to inner states of mind as the ideology of the meaning of life changes.

Meditation will provide a whole new direction of a vastly different perspective on man's place in the universe. You won't give up your TV, internet, chips and beer tomorrow, but some future generation will get tired of the endless treadmill of commercialism, of being used. That restlessness will grow along side a dwindling standard of living to be a danger to the continued survival of the species in the age-worn manner that has become the custom. A quiet revolt, a withdrawing into the mind in pursuit of enlightenment will become the goal. but many will still want their craven physical rewards and will cause difficulties with the transition. Sex is not the total answer by any stretch of the imagination.

You're not looking at it from the economical standpoint. Using a corporation as an analogy, employing 100, 000, 000 people requires a large infrastructure to generate 5.867 Trillion per year. If half of those employees called in sick, then that infrastructure would no longer be able to support its size and value of the corporation would be unsustainable. In other words, Japan is too big to suddenly roll back production.

It's Japanese culture (along with all the recent natural and man-made disasters) that is causing this fall in their birthrate.

Why have young people in Japan stopped having sex?

Marriage has become a minefield of unattractive choices. Japanese men have become less career-driven, and less solvent, as lifetime job security has waned. Japanese women have become more independent and ambitious. Yet conservative attitudes in the home and workplace persist. Japan's punishing corporate world makes it almost impossible for women to combine a career and family, while children are unaffordable unless both parents work. Cohabiting or unmarried parenthood is still unusual, dogged by bureaucratic disapproval.

Aoyama says the sexes, especially in Japan's giant cities, are "spiraling away from each other". Lacking long-term shared goals, many are turning to what she terms "Pot Noodle love" – easy or instant gratification, in the form of casual sex, short-term trysts and the usual technological suspects: online porn, virtual-reality "girlfriends", anime cartoons. Or else they're opting out altogether and replacing love and sex with other urban pastimes.

Seems right on time IMO. All you have to do is think about the mental state of
Japaneese women. With the reality of Fukushima taking some time to sink in.
I'm sure they hold no illusions.

The Gardasil vaccine got approved in June of 2006 and a mass campaign by Merk called "One Lesss" started in 2007. The age group targeted was teenage girls and young women. The conspiracy side of me see the phrase "One Less" to mean one less child?

Looking at that graph and seeing the drop in fertility from late 2007 to 2010 gives me goose bumps thinking that this vaccine could be related..

Interesting subject OP with many factors at play.

First of all a birthrate of > 2.00 is required to maintain a population due to premature deaths and deaths without reproduction which brings the minimum number to somewhere around 2.3.

Second the whole overpopulation is mostly a cry from individuals living in large cities and does NOT reflect mathematical models of population.

P= M/(1+Ae^-kt) where:
M = max population (estimated)
A = some constant (ie: 1, 2, 3, 5, -5697.444 , etc . . .)
k = some constant multiplier which represents replacement rate ( ie: 2.1 , 4.4 , etc . . .)
t = time (usually years)

This formula clearly demonstrates that replacement rates have a greater impact on maximum sustainable population. Models using current replacement rates give evidence that populations up to and greater than . . . . . 50 BILLION people are legitimate predictions for maximum population. You can set the value for M anywhere from 500 million to 90 billion and will see very little difference.

Let us not forget that the Malthusians have been screaming about overpopulation for a century now and have yet to have their theory validated.

Personally I feel that if you are at all concerned about overpopulation you should opt out of reproducing and immediately sterilize yourself to demonstrate your conviction for "preserving" the planet. Overpopulation really comes across as some existential fear of competition supported by self centered individuals who don't know how to share.

Population increases in the United States are a result of immigration.

Birth rates in most all developed countries are well below replacement levels (ie USA). Please get your facts straight if you are going to promote depopulation.

Flysolo makes a critical point in the dangers of depopulation and its impact on economies and thus standards of living.

Oh I know.. They sat around a table with a turkey and then went to walmart the next day right?

I recall reading an article about this awhile ago.
Honestly, I'm not surprised. The Japanese have a complete different mindset compared to westerners when it comes to this sort of subject -- Also, I don't have a desire to have children. I once did, but not anymore -- I'm not sure if it's a temporal feeling but I feel pretty adamant, however, naturally I still feel the same primal urges for intimacy
. . . Like someone else mentioned, sex nowadays is used primarily for pleasure -- Is this just a sign that we as a society are just becoming more selfish? or is it perhaps related to all the additives in our foods, the radiation we are exposed to daily, and all the other plethora of things that are on the list that could possibly be affecting us? I'm unsure, but with 7 billion people on this planet, having sex for pleasure only definitely isn't a problem.
