What is your favorite videogame cutscene?

UTINNI!!!

I was just going through some of my old videogames that I no longer play.
Whether because a newer version was released, the operating system they were designed for is obsolete or I just grew tired of them.
My first experience with home pc gaming was the original "Flight Simulator" game. My roomie was working to get his civilian operators permit and he was enthralled with anything involving aviation.
It was his computer but shortly after I discovered the X-wing game from Lucasarts and began to monopolize the time on his machine trying to blow up the Death Star...which I only accomplished once by accident.
Cutscenes were non-existant back them but soon after came the FPS revolution.
Doom, Quake, Heretic...the list goes on and on.
Then came a game called: "Mechwarrior 2" and the opening cutscene literally blew me away:



Then came their Ghost Bear Legacy expansion:



They only got better from there on in:





Many other similar games had scenes:



But by then, it was too late...I was hooked.
Dark Forces II attracted my attention next. The live-action scenes mixed with CGI dates back to pre RotJ times and were my sole "galaxy far far away" fix for quite some time.



(I had such a crush on Angela Harry!)

Unfortunately for me, the live cutscenes were becoming a thing of the past.
As the game engines improved dramatically, the gaming companies decided CGI cutscenes were less problematic than live action ones. As evidence I cite the Lucasarts game Force Commander.





Time passed and the CGI scenes soon began a parabola-like increase in quality:





Then the quality of these scenes then started to become comperable to motion pictures. Celebrities started to make regular appearances in these games:





Videogames suddenly made a quantum leap forward and began to surpasse movies in enjoyment, plot development, mood musical scores and scripting:







Now, in their latest incarnation, these cutscenes are now superior to anything Hollywood can think to release and are leaving traditional film behind in the dust:





So, now my question to y'all out there is:

"What's your favorite cutscene?"

MECHWARRIOR!! Ahh those were the days ^^ I remember the Bad Company 2 intro also lol, played through the campaign three times so far but the servers are too laggy to enjoy the multiplayer very much

Personally, the scene that I first saw that blew me away was the Final Fantasy X Blitzball scene in the beginning part of the game. Growing up with pixels and polygons, this scene was the first time I actually saw legitimate realistic CGI in a video game. As a matter of fact, ALL of the CGI used in the game blew me away. Considering it was one of my first PS2 games ever, and I got it the day it was released in the states means alot to me and it doesn't disappoint.

Many other scenes also impacted me over my years, but since FFX takes the cake for the most visually impressive, even unto today, I'd have to say a few scenes in Drakengard 2 had me at the edge of my seat, for instance:

But the most emotionally impacting scene obviously goes to the MGS 4 ending, which I consider truly to be the greatest video game scene of all time, and one of the greatest villain/anti-hero deaths of all time.



It's comparable to growing up with, and aging alongside Batman in the comics, and then the final chapter comes and he succumbs to old wounds. It was just that impacting.

My all-time fave RTS.
I loved that Yes did the music for that game and still listen to "The Ladder" frequently.

I had a feeling you may have forgotten Homeworld, even if not for videos cuts - simply for the stunning visuals in game. Truly remarkable for the time and Homeworld II was a simply gorgeous squeal.

Knowing I'm a gamer since my youth, I could have given many cinematics I liked the most (some you have already posted like Starcraft 2) but there is one that came into my head more than the others.

And it is a cinematic from The Secret World. As simple as it may be, rather than the CGI animations it could have provided, it is more the shivers I got from the message they wanted to provide that sticked with me.

Take a look and you might understand:

Halflife had a good start to it, but only the first first times - anyone else think it got tedious you couldn't skip it

Oh and while not an older classic - but borderlands should be mentioned! Oh crap and bioshock!!! (wow)

Now Half-life, Borderlands and Bioshock are three games I never played.
I don't really know why.
I have nothing against them and many say they are really fun to play but for some reason they never appealed to me. Nor do I recall what I was playing most often when they were released...which might have had something to do with it.
Console games were another category I also never bothered with. I only played PC games on a performance optimized clone...guess I am just spoiled that way.
Speaking of not recalling, I forgot to mention a few:













Almost forgot one!
What salute to videogame goodness would be complete without some representation for our man...Duke Nukem Forever...which is a coinsedence because that's how long we'll have to wait for it to be released.
Too bad it'll never see the light of day.

Judging by the titles you have linked, id say that if you want to play any Ive mentioned play Bioshock. Great story, action puzzles maps - its a great game and on steam for peanuts.

Ive not played Bioshock infinite yet but its on my list.

I thank you heartily for the suggestion.
My latest bout of bad news came to me when I just discovered that to meet the recommended performance requirements just for BF4, it would cost me about eight bills just to play a $60 dollar game.

Too bad some are so old (incompatible OS) or console-only games (which I don't have) like the MGS series. I could really dig playing some of the later MGS titles...always loved the Rex
