TACLOBAN, Philippines (Reuters) - At least 10,000 people died in the central Philippine province of Leyte after Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall, lashed the province, swallowing coastal towns, a senior police official said on Sunday.

About 70 to 80 percent of the area in the path of Haiyan in Leyte province was destroyed, said Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria.

"We had a meeting last night with the governor and the other officials. The governor said based on their estimate, 10,000 died," Soria told Reuters.

I find it dissapointing that it is 2013, and the human race is still subject to such a great loss of life due to inclimate weather.

I think now a drastic reassessment of priorities for our species is in order.

Too bad the elite don't think enough of others to let us/them share their underground bunkers at times like this!

ETA: WAIT! What was I thinking!! They are probably the ones behind the super-weather, trying to bring the population numbers down. (face palm)

Definitely an awesome show of force by mother nature, and an enormous tragedy for some many.
And an important reminder of how easy most of us have it.
