Those allied troops look like 'Doughboys' to me, the British had light tanks called 'Whippets' , and with the German's wearing the M16 Helmet, its late 1916, or 1917-1918, that reel might be an out-take from the silent version of 'All quiet on the western front' or was the first film a 'talkie' anyone with a better memory than mine?

im saying that these guys finding were tough and brave, you think the new age feminised men of today could last 5 second in that situation, hand to hand combat with tanks rolling towards them and mortars going off 10 feet away, no way not unless its on x box.

the camera may be set up in a bunker. The film is obviously very old and if it was faked it looks more realistic than modern war movie recreations.

If you want to say that you think the men of oday are weak and cowards, then please do so without suggesting they are feminised.
There is nothing weak and fearfull about women, aprt from in the heads od mysogynists.

I don't think there was a silent version of 'All quiet on the western front'. The first movie was made in the 30's as far as I can remember. We were shown the film as part of our history lessons. It is a very good film and gives an insight from the German point of view.

In fact the book was banned by the Nazi party due to the negative message it portrayed.

Agreed, i saw that too.

The British guy who uses his bayonet on the German, the German and the Brit go down, but nothing appears to touch the British guy yet he remains still after jumping onto the German..the German is seen to be moving on the ground.

At first i thought maybe the British guy was shot by someone out of the camera view (which he may well have been) and died while falling onto the German he'd just stabbed, who also died shortly after he stopped his death throes movement.

Then i thought perhaps the Brit was playing dead, so the other Germans didn't overrun him (wise move if so)..but it could well have been that all of them were actually actors in an early movie.

This is certainly staged footage but, for what is the question. Most WW1 battle footage was staged as the real stuff was considered to boring for good PR. Battles were rare so most footage was simply guys in trenches. The placement of the camera is a dead give away to begin with. Attacks were started with long and massive artillery barages and then assaults. No way for a camera man to get out there and survive much less get footage that survived. Also the quick pace of the battle, tanks and planes all appearing in a very short amount of time, the lack of having to cut through tons of wire, the the clear flat terrain for the tanks instead of a heavly pitted battle fileds of WW1 do to artillery, the defenders who would be in trenches running out in to no mans right away before they have inflicted massive casualties on the attackers etc.

REAL MEN, WITH REAL BALLS, AND REAL GUNS!!
Ain't war glorious...
Yet we do it time and time again to make some fat cat fatter.
This clip should not be looked upon with awe, but shame for allowing them to trick us every single time.
Real idiots, with real families, real bad...

By the way, once again, if this isnt real, its as close to going back in time 100 years and being on the ww1 battlefield as you will ever get.

I am certainly not an expert on battlefield tacticts, but why did the Brits(?) set up a Maxim machine gun behind the advancing troops? To cover a retreat maybe? It does look real though, no dramatic deaths with soldiers throwing their arms up and then clutching their chests when shot like in the movies of the day.

exactly

and if this was a movie, or propeganda, you CERTAINLY would not be seeing the officer as one of the first to run back...

(look for tall guy without rifle whos holding either a stick or a pistol around 8 second mark.. lower screen)

Without war we would be like gods

Simple, yet elegant, such a powerful statement with just seven words. I'm stunned thinking about it, so much wasted effort that could have gone into something to better us all.

Here here .
Well said.

And OP I would recommend the 1914 film Birth of a Nation.
3 hours of amazing film work about the civil war and aftermath.
Very controversial and made up of pure propaganda. It glorifies the Klu Klux Klan
as necessary to keep the peace after the war. Because according to the maker
DW Griffith, the recently freed black man couldn't keep his mind off of raping white women.

Horrible in its protrayaI of African Americans . Most roles were played by whites
in blackface. Despite all of these atrocities I think it's rated as one the top
50 films ever made. Great study in political propaganda, one whose techniques
may still used today, with the current political climate in the US.
I've been into silent films for awhile now and there is so much to learn.

Brother fights brother and all so the aristocracy could feel safe in there beds at night, you know following the russian revolution they sent more and more lads to die in order to deliberately thin the population as they were frightened of a socialist revolution and believed the answer was to kill off as many working class men as possible, an entire generation was lost and even ten years after you would have seen the streets filled with woman and hardly any men.

Absolutely horrible but necessary historical information non theless and I can not bring myself to watch it as I know I would be revulsed and angry.

Thank you as this will educate a lot of people about there grandfather, great grandfathers and great great grandfathers generations.

If anyone refused they were labelled coward and cowards were shot, shell shock was coined for men whom had bee so traumatized they would sit there and shake jabbering, they were lined up and shot for cowardice in the face of the enemy, there officers would deliberately order them over the top to make charges of a few hundred feet of ground at machine gun posts which mowed them down, these were young men, the best men of a generation and they were senselessly sent to there deaths to appease a matter of pride and later to quell those fears of a socialist revolution.

WW1 really was fought by real men with enormous amounts of courage, knowing they likely were not coming back yet, still walking towards the enemy line, knowing they were all that stood between the enemy and what they held dear..
You said it best, just look at what we have today..
If WW1 were fought by todays "modern" man, we would all be German.

I am not sure what you mean by this post to be honest..
Did it take any less courage to survive the Battle of the Bulge or Korea or Vietnam or the Battle of Fallujha?
