Fireworks were fired at Buckingham Palace last night and a blaze was started just yards from its gates as hundreds of masked Anonymous protesters clashed with police.

The demonstrators - taking part in a global march against austerity cuts known as the Anonymous Million Mask Protest - threw glass bottles during confrontations with officers in riot gear.

Comedian Russell Brand, 38, joined in the protest as he used an opinion article in The Guardian to say that people riot ‘when dialogue fails, when they feel unrepresented and bored by the illusion’.

A masked Russell Brand leads Anonymous march against austerity cuts: Funnyman-turned-activist joins protesters as they aim fireworks at Buckingham Palace

It is great to finally see an outspoken, famous individual such as Russell Brand putting his money where his mouth is and actually walking the walk. To be honest, i wasn't expecting him to actually take any physical action for his beliefs, but i am pleased by this.

Many see it as a political stunt, but i'm not so sure. Brand seems legit in his beliefs and reasoning. I think he is the type of person who would actually take physical action for change, rather than publicity.

In addition to Brand's participation in the Anonymous march, he had also recently authored an article for the Guardian newspaper, whereby he wrote the following:

‘We are living in a time of huge economic disparity and confronting ecological disaster. This disparity has always been, in cultures since expired, a warning sign of end of days.

‘In Rome, Egypt and Easter Island the incubated ruling elites, who had forgotten that we are one interconnected people, destroyed their societies by not sharing.

‘That is what's happening now, regardless of what you think of my hair or me using long words, the facts are the facts and the problem is the problem. Don't be distracted.’

Why wear a mask when it is the same as your face...?

I have a lot of respect for Brand lately. I think he was greatly underestimated for many reasons and I am ok with the fact that some folks will jump on this bandwagon because he is who he is. We need more people to wake up. HOW they wake up or WHO wakes them up is of no consequence IMO.

I like him and I like what he says (mostly). I hope he keeps being underestimated and I hope he keeps speaking out. It is not easy for one in "Hollywood" to go against the grain but he is doing it and doing it loudly/proudly.

This is the drug addict guy? The one who sees females as things for his pleasure? Who speaks like he went to Smackhead Caveman Special Academy...

No respect from me that's for sure.

The guy is completely misguided. Any form of socialism is ten times worse than what we have now.
People need to start waking up to their own individual freedom and responsibility instead of following others.

I believe he's an ex addict. As to his sexual prowess (or his attitude to women, which I do not believe is as a misogynistic as you portray), that's altogether irrelevant.

And as to how he speaks; have you actually watched any of his interviews? I wish that we had politicians who were as erudite, educated and passionate as he obviously is, and who were willing to put themselves on the line to support their beliefs instead of kow-towing to their masters and following the party line in promoting skewed religious or philosophical ideals, rather of doing what's morally, logically and ethically right for the world.

I agree , he's seen life from both sides as an addict and now as a millionaire but seems to of kept his social conscience and beliefs in tact .

Russell Brand is an erudite man who has a way with words that I find quite compelling , I could listen to (and agree with) his views all day long .

If we had a party of politicians made from his mould I believe this country would be in a lot better shape .

I find it pretty sad that people need cult personality celebrities to lead them at all. I don't trust anyone involved in the entertainment industries personally. A lot of them signed on the dotted line to the devil, figuratively speaking of course.

And some have said he's the Messiah, but he's not...even though he has been a very naughty boy.

Any country, at that.

At least he can be honest about his past mistakes, rather than continue them secretly and under the protection of the state...

And Obama isn't a "cult personality/celebrity"?

As to signing your soul away; most politicians do that when they ignore the needs of the people over the wants of the wealthy.

No argument here. Did you think I would disagree? Being a cult personality is for sure one of the requirements in politics. Hell, they spend so much time preening and campaigning, they can't be bothered to do their job, read and understand bills before they pass them and such.

Doesn't the use of the word Cult indicate not many people like something. I bet most of the rioters aren't even affected by the austerity cuts or even know what the word means. As far as Mr Brand goes my thoughts are a misspelling of Cult

Yep. I find it ironic that people are doing an "anonymous" protest with Guy Faukes masks demanding MORE government.

When the celebrity speaks so much sense then why not , aside from being a celebrity he is also a man with a breadth of experience and a bucket load of intelligence which sets him apart from most plastic alleged celebs .
Watch and listen to this ....

Refreshing !
Power to the people

While "cult personality celebrities" may not be needed, it certainly doesn't hurt if we have someone such as Brand helping in waking up the masses.

Surely having someone of his calibre helping out is a benefit.

No, I did not think you'd disagree!

And the whole political spectrum is about building personality/celebrity, otherwise why would election rallies be so showbiz orientated? They are designed to make the leader of "the party" seem glamorous, exciting, watchable.

And when they're elected, the grey men - the real decision makers; advisers, spin doctors and experts - take over to do the job we voted the personality in to do.

Personally, I'd rather vote for someone with obvious passion, and who's willing to make a stand.

Yeah, a breadth of experience playing a roll though, you know. Like politicians, they are just good at playing a part. Doing some digging, every single famous or rich person pushing for left wing ideology is a hypocrite. Talk against guns, yet hire armed guards. Run their mouths against capatalism, yet own stock, or are serving on a board somewhere, or own a company. It's not like he has any new or revolutionary ideas there. I would keep my eye on that guy, make sure he hasn't been attending any of those bilderburg meetings

I could be completely offbase, and this guy is genuine.
