Lets say there was an APOCALPYSE. And we met, what would your role end up being???

Id be the professor although I am not that old.

Making medicine from scratch, including antibiotics.
I could preform minor surgery if I had to.
Making water filtration from scratch even if its radioactive or filled with chemicals and parasites.
Making DC and AC power from scavenged junk.
Military strategy if needed.
Food. Even if you can't go into town. It's all over the ground or you can catch it. Traps, snares, hobo fishing, Vietcong xbows, arrows from scratch.
Navigation. I can make a compass from sticks and dirt, or silk and metal.

I think my main role would be teaching other people. It's all in my head. I have always planned on having to survive solo so I kinda memorized it all. There would need to be some benefit to being in a group for me to join one I think. Groups of people can sometimes be more dangerous then surviving alone.

I would have to throw away all my survival gear and food to show up with only a tent though. There's no way Id ever show up without a good knife either. *hugs his Buck knife*

I have a supply of heirloom seeds. I would be gardener extraordinaire and weeder of weeds. Without electricity, of which I'm assuming there is not, we would need to figure out how to store the veggies. Otherwise, I could can them. Root veggies are a bit easier to figure out but tomatoes would have to be dried. I know I'd definitely miss electricity and hot water. And bubble baths.

From S.E. Asia, Africa, to the deep jungles of south America I have yet to meet a Tarzan (even he had Jane once the monkey's got old). Strength in numbers usually around 30 people seems to be the magic number in a geographical area so resources are not totally wiped out.

There are primitives who for their survival chose to live in a communal setting. Lone wolf stuff, if history is a factor, does not seem to work. There are still villages where people have very little contact with what most would consider civilization and they seem to do just fine with young kids playing in the dirt and enjoying life.

For me if I were caught in this scenario other than being able to fly helicopter and fixed wing aircraft and being a good shot with Bow or rifles/handguns I would just be another air breather especially if the bullets ran out.. I guess I could teach Golf but a well maintained course might be a problem and not much demand for such a thing. Oh well..?

My wife would be the one who could make food from just about nothing.

If we had fuel a decent helicopter or fixed wing for scouting (air support) new areas or getting supplies would be an asset IMO but I am bias..

Actually there should be plenty of airports with underground fuel storage that would be available with a simple hand pump.. I have had to make low passes to frighten dear off a runway more than once...Just depends on the location of the airport. Also an airport has a clear field of fire which is an advantage if there a roving bands of zombies... hahhaha

A truck or car in a mad max world might be a short ride to hell.

If most people just drop dead leaving the assets of society in place survival for a few years should not be a problem except for all the Nuclear plants that melt down and make everything uninhabitable in their surrounding area.

In my younger days I would have felt like I could do whatever to survive... Now my thinking has become more and more on the side of being at ground zero if the big one goes off.. One second you are alive and the next "Poof" you are gone... Guess we will have to wait and see what plays out...

ATS users should have a predetermined place meet incase the apocalypse happens. people here seem much more civilized than the masses already. if everyone met up there would actually be hope for humanities survival. im sure most of the people on this site are not the type to go crazy and start hunting people for food

but that would involve treking 1000's of miles, that would take a good year to walk that far

but the end result could be a large group of critical thinking people who are skilled in many things and would probably be able to create a better government than our current one. also it would give people a goal and a light at the end of the tunnel a sense of hope and purpose when everything falls apart. sure it may take more than a year and people would defiantly die along the way. but what else is there to do? stay where you are and die?

i would be a spiritual loner.

I remember a similar thread sometime back... But yeah, may as well throw my 2¢ in.

Anyhow I'm a bit of a generalist, rather than a specialist. Dabble here and there, so I can't claim any particular specialty. I suspect most might get the impression of a useless eater at first though, I tend to be a bit lazy so I prefer the easy way of doing things over hard work.

However this also means I can be a bit of an improviser. Some people will either give up or end up doing things that cause more harm if their tried and true methods fail. I'll take my time to look at it, and scrap something together which has reasonable odds of working. The more leftover junk I could have access to, the better. However I would need some help from specialists. I could probably get hot water, some HVAC type stuff going (and refrigeration), and maybe some basic electricity up (because I want working computers too - if there's a chance at it), but I would still need assitance by some people that know how to weld and do a few other specialties where I feel I don't have enough experience to trust the quality of my own work. (And I don't want to be doing something stupid where metal might go brittle involving boilers and stuff to get a fairly basic steam plant working.)

Other than that, if nobody wants to help on some of my more technical handiwork and artistry (I wouldn't call it engineering though, since I'm not up to the par of an engineer - anyone going through those schools usually earns that title), I'm not too bad at woodworking with more traditional materials and tools. It's something I'd do if I had the time and space and wasn't preoccupied with other things while trying to get by in the current societal order. Being able to make furniture would be a given. Yet I also wouldn't be afraid to try something more challenging to build with the material like various wooden framed vehicles.

Now if hard labor is all you need by the time I run into your group, I'd simply do what I can to head off again and take my chances with the zombies. If I made it through everything long enough to get to that point, I certainly could keep doing whatever I was doing on my own.

I think I'd be very useful.

Been cooking in restaurants for 16 years and playing music for 20, jack of all trades, master of nothing.
Highly logical thinker and great problem solver, have always lived what I'd consider an 'improvised life'.

I'd like to think that if something like this occurred, it'd be the key point in time to rebuild the Earth and learn to live with it, rather than on it, Utopia. In whatever way I could add to that, I'll be along that path.

Of course, it'd be fun to do things just to mess with future generations. As well as communicating peace, love and good happiness stuff, I'd also be replacing/adding to any remaining landmark something related to the Ninja Turtles. Like Mt. Rushmore, I'd change all the faces to the Ninja Turtles. Statue of Liberty.....maybe to April O'Neil ....Lincoln Memorial would be Splinter, etc. I'd replace all religious literature with Ninja Turtle comics and the Science Of Mind.

I think we've done this thread before, so I'll just mention one skill I learned at an early age.

I could build you a solar powered water heater out of almost nothing and soap is easy to make. You could still have an occasional bubble bath

Forgot that I can make pure ethanol from scratch. I know how to build and operate a still. Or I can make bio-diesel from fat. There are a lot of things I could put down. Lotion isn't that hard to make either I recently studied that because of all the chemicals in store bought. Hardest thing to get is bees wax.

Nah, I like cooking, but I don't want to do it every night. And the more cooks from different areas means more good, different food. Add to that, if a cook takes their job seriously, they'll know what's safe to eat and what isn't.

And as far as culture/religion having anything to do with basic needs, I agree with you, unfortunately, wars have been won and lost for years over those very two things and surely some will survive who will want to carry on old traditions.

Hopefully on the next run, we can just go for a "We're all going to die at some point, so f*ck it, here, have some pie." mentality.

I probably would not join your camp, because the place you described sounds just like where I live. I already have water nearby, plenty of deer and other animals in my back yard and I only live a short distance from a nearby city. Most of my friends live in similar situations and we have more than enough fire power to protect ourselves with. I guess, if I lived in a city and needed to stay at your camp, I could hunt for food or protect the camp. But, as of today, you might be better off coming to live in my neck of the woods at my camp.
