Absolutely, it took being spotted by a brit and gigging in the uk to break him to the world!

I hate to get all fair minded and such (really, i do) but the trans-atlantic cross-pollenation of rock is massively important.

But if we are talking about somewhere that punches way above it's weight musically, what about Jamaica? Off topic, but surely the best pound for pound musical boxer the world has ever seen.

Ok lets get serious. Here are a list of British bands not previously mentioned that were not only huge in America but also all around the world:-

Genesis
Yes
The Police
Supertramp
Duran Duran
Depeche Mode
The Moody Blues
Judas Priest
The Clash
The Cure
The Sex Pistols
The Zombies
Cream
Eurythmics
Iron Maiden
Procol Harum
Thompson Twins
Whitesnake
The Bee Gees
Joy Division
New Order
The Human League
Simple Minds

The above list took a couple of minutes to compile. If i gave it some serious thought the list would be huge

I would tend to agree with the OP although music is such a personal topic. I grew up listening to mostly Britiish rock bands:

The Beatles
Elton John
David Bowie
Led Zepplin
Pink Floyd
Genesis
Yes
Peter Gabriel

My favorite American bands were:

Journey
Bob Seger

As you can see I heavily favored the Brits but as I grew older I started listening to some Jazz and other forms of music. When it comes to Jazz, R&B, Blues, etc the Americans have it all over everyone else. In fact, if you look at Sting's first solo album his band was a who's who of American Jazz musicians.

Maybe this post should've been labelled "Best ROCK Bands"?

That is very true. The Beatles and Stones took a lot from American 50's rock. The Stones leaning towards southern rock/blues and the Beatles more Chicago/NY style music. It really seems like a symbiosis.

John Lennon said that "if you tried to give rock n roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry."

From what I read on wiki, en.wikipedia.org... Chuck is considered by many to be the greatest of rock n rollers. He is still alive and touring..
I never followed him too much as he's a bit before my time, but Jonny B Goode is timeless

The strange thing is white America never took to black music at the time Chuck Berry , Little Richard and others were in their prime in the 1950's. It took bands like The Beatles , Stones and The Animals who re-worked their music to bring it to white America.
After a couple of years of doing so, bands like those began to write their own material. And as they say the rest is history.

Interesting development UK and US music IS linked. Check out the American pup with the UK wizard:

That said, most UK music is based in the blues of the last century and rock since 55.

SYMBIOTIC!!!! Can't have one without the other.

Although that's true to some extent, there are genre's of music that are pure British. For example Heavy Metal, electronic techno music, skiffle, new romance, dance music, psychedelic rock and many more.
All these crossed The Atlantic.

I'm American and if it wasn't for these two groups, which are British, I don't know what I would have done surfing the internet in the 90's without these CD's playing non-stop.

Bee Gees

Depeche Mode

Born in Britain but emigrated to Australia with their parents. Came back to Britain 6 years later.

Are you taking the piss?

Bums & Posies material output is laughable. They have produced 6 albums in 28 years
Pink Floyd produced 14 albums in 27 years, and of a much higher quality.
