There was an incident in which SETI recieved a strong candidate signal and registered it multiple times. The signal didn't pass the test though,
it's drift rate was too high to be an intelligence attempting to comunicate. They concluded the signal must have been natural. This was rather
recent, I believe.
Of course, there is also a conspiracy stating that SETI recieved a candidate signal, tested positive and at theat point the US Government terminated
funding and scared them into keeping quiet. That is why SETI is now a private organization, allegedly.
However, SETI has always said that in the event they recieved an intelligent signal, and it tested positive, they would immediatly alert the general
public. I see no reason to distrust them. After all, look at Occams Razor, "the simplest answer usually proves to be the correct answer."

Call me naive, but I find it hard to believe that the United States government would go to far measures to "cover up the truth". It's a conspiracy
theory I just don't buy into...
What about other countries and their governments? Are they trying to cover up the truth as well? Or do aliens/UFO sightings only happen in the
United States?

UFOs are seen everywhere, the configuration of these "ships" vary depending on the erra. The aliens seem to decommision UFOs and put new ones into
the fleet quite often. Much unlike the US does, look at how old our F14, Chinook and most of the vesels in the US Naval fleet is.
I have myself seen odd things, extemely peculiar in fact. Whether or not they are government, illusions, or aliens is up for debate.
Anywho, is the aliens are hear or just contacting us, it is unlikely only the US is aware of the situation and/or in contact.

You might find this makes interesting reading
www.abovetopsecret.com...
it's a debate that Genya our 'SETI-fied!' mod took part in.
The point being made was just slightly different to your own , being that Genya was arguing against the notion that SETI was created as a diversion
from the fact that we already have contact with aliens and that it's crunching usless data, rather than what you suggest , that it has found signals
but hasn't told us.
On a couple of occasions in the debate, Genya points out that SETI isn't the only group with it's ear to the heavens , so it couldn't really cover
anything up that others might find for themselves.
(oooops sorry link fixed )

I read that if SETI picked up anything they can't put it right out, there is a long list of protocal they have to go through.
When they talk about the feul needed to travel well the ships just harvest energy from space. And to be honest if they spent as much time and energy
looking under our waters using low frequency wave length's they probably would get further.

i don't think SETI has to go through to much to make signals public-all it takes is a leak really if the case is that they do. but the last
significant signal picked up became national news. they they did look a little frightened when they went on tv and said it was a false alarm

The Government would not want SETI to tell us the truth if they did recieve a signal. They know that if the truth is revealed, complete anarchy would
arise and the world would go through a complete change...and we are not ready for that yet in our current situation. In the end however, the
Government has the final say in everything, and most will believe them because they control our lives.
I do have the SETI thingy on my CPU...and have no clue on how it actually works...but I do remember like about a month or two ago, the frequency was
just this huge giant block instead of ripplies...and it was analyzing that data for a good five minutes before it went into another set of data. I
thought that might have been something...but wasn't sure. Did that happen to any of you in that time?

I don't think SETI should be shut down. Their cause is just and I think the majority of the world supports it, aspecially considering it's a private
orgaization now. I mean, if there's even the slightest chance that we might make contact with another civilization, don't you think we should be
searching for it? Think about the many things we could learn from them! Their philosophies, scieintific achievments, the history of the universe. The
possibilities are endless, we very well could learn the answers to every question we are currently pondering.
Even if the contact civilization isn't willing to share technology or information with us, or that civilization is now dead and cannot share
information or tech, wouldn't it be exciting to know there are or have been others out there for sure? I think so. Such a finding would be
dramatically useful and enlightening.
