The problem is their "bigger allies" aren't in a position to do it either. Russia has enough problems with their own military right now. Give them a few more years, and they could probably do it, and easily. But realistically right now, they can't.

China has never tried to project any kind of power that far from home, so it would be difficult for them at best, disastrous at worst.

Difficult if they tried by themselves for sure.
There are other allies, or teamwork isn't out of the question...they would just have to wait until China owns the US...which isn't far.

Except Russia has said they weren't going to send any S-300s until at least next year, due to lack of payment, and because of fears of further destabilizing the region.

I would LOVE for the US to release a list of the worldwide "bad guys" from one year to the next. That would be a hoot!!

Thats classified. Only the current Middle Eastern bad guys are on the main stream radar. It helps people to understand why their sons and daughters are dyin over there and provides mainstream fodder to distract form the other "clandestine enemies actions".

But we can hoot it up anyway, can't we? After all this is the Internet!

And the Soviets supplied Egypt and Syria aid during the war as well. Why leave that out?

Israel had started to turn the tide against both Syria and Egypt before US aid began arriving. Their losses were higher than expected, due to new technology from the Soviet Union. They had already turned back the Syrian forces, and were starting to regain ground against them, and had stalemated the Egyptian forces, without any significant material aid from the US at that point.

Darn those Russians. they went back on their word. That is how wars are fought when by Proxy. Didn't we say we would never blow Libya to kingdom come too?

Which is why we are currently embedded in this slow bleed theatre of lo level conflict.

Bwah Wah. We didn't get our No Fly Zone! It would be "more stable" that way. Actually Libya-izing Syria.

News from the other side of the coin.

Israeli warplanes struck a Syrian air defense base near the port city of Latakia on Thursday, US official have confirmed to media.

An Obama administration official told AP that the attack happened overnight on Thursday, but provided no details. Another security official told the news agency that it took place in the Syrian port city of Latakia, and that the targets were Russian-made SA-125 missiles.

nother US official told CNN that the Israelis believed the base near Snobar Jableh, south of Latakia, had sensitive and sophisticated missile equipment that may have been transferred to the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

Earlier, Dubai-based broadcaster al-Arabiya reported two attacks carried out by the Israeli Air Forces – one in Latakia and the other one in Damascus.

Neither the Syrian nor Israeli governments have commented on the alleged attacks.

A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Ministry declined to speak on the matter.
"We're not commenting on these reports," he told Reuters.

However, an Israeli official speaking anonymously to the news agency said he was inclined to believe that Israel had carried out a strike, although he was not entirely certain.

The Lebanese military said it observed six Israeli jets flying over Lebanese territory on Wednesday, Reuters reported. Israeli jets frequently fly over Lebanon, but such high numbers have in the past been an indication of a military strike against Syria.

I'm going to trust Russian sources, more than internet sources personally. Syria has paid a tiny fraction of what these weapons cost, so why would Russia risk losing all that money and send them, when they're useless in a civil war, and there is no longer any sign of the West trying to impose a no fly zone, or take any other action. There's no reason for them to risk that kind of money.

I have to Agree. Israel got a bloody nose at first but then had already struck back and struck hard before any US aid. Egypt caught them napping and they paid a very high price for that nap.

Seems Israel have been busy little bunnies of late:-

Israeli war jet strikes on northern Gaza

www.chinadaily.com.cn...

They certainly seem to like their planes in the air.

Palestinian witnesses and Hamas rulers said that Israeli F16 warplanes struck out missiles on a military camp of Islamic Jihad militant group in Rafah town and two other open areas in west of Khan Younis, adding that no injuries or damage were reported.
Israeli radio reported that Israeli air force struck on early Monday arms depots and rocket launching site in response to six rockets fired towards towns in southern Israel overnight.
Raed Fattouh, the Palestinian liaison officer in charge of commercial crossings between Israel and Gaza, said in a press statement that Israel sealed off the two crossings in response to rockets fire.

Russia is going about it wrong... i f they need to protect the shipment then Russia should have a ship based missile shield to knock out those Israeli aggressors

If Russia is just delivering goods... then Syria should protect their merchandise better...

knocking out aggressor aircraft that are attacking your sovereign soil is an act of War....
(which evidently the USA does not abide by, with the USAs 'Drone' warfare tactics on independent nations)

Perhaps what we are seeing is a little bit of a tanty because the "Chemical Weapon" meme has been taken out of the picture for a reason to start the war in Syria.

“All stocks of chemical weapons and agents have been placed under seals that are impossible to break,” Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) spokesperson Christian Chartier told AFP.

I'm sure lots of the usual people will be bashing Israel, but say what you will, you gotta admire the Israelis Intelligence gathering apparatus. Not much that gets by them.

Yeah....not even the 9-11 twin towers got-by-them.... they were able to dance on the roof-tops even as the planes were ramming into the WTC... it was almost like they were only there to witness a catastrophe that was un -expected & unknown but they had the popcorn & drinks already in hand

The right to defend themselves.

I was wondering if you could forward me the info on the last time that Syria attacked Israel? Defense is no excuse in this case. Syria has not attacked Israel nor threatened to....so whom are they defending themselves from?

Israel is bombing Hezbollah targets, whether its Hezbollah troops or their arms. As long as Hezbollah fights for Assad in Syria Israel will continue to attack, which may lead to Syria eventually striking back.

They know that they can't. After years of fighting their air force is hurting, even to keep planes flying, let alone strike Israel, who is far better trained, and equipped than they are. It would be a slaughter, with almost nothing to show for it but some planes shot down.

And You know Israel can Strike, Thus declare war on anyone they want in the middle east? even though they were defeated by whole population of Lebanon?

who is far better trained, and equipped than they are

Israel is better who is far better trained, and equipped than they are? if they were they wouldn't have lost the war in Lebanon.

A Very Huge mistake and Risky move, John McCain is celebrating the attack. In fact he really wants a war against Russia.
