No he was on a flight plan from Ontario, to the Lake Eerie area. He apparently had flown that route a number of times. He checked in when he landed at the island that he planned to stop at. It's from that point things get murky. He didn't say anything to anyone about going to Nashville, and it's not clear if he filed a flight plan for that leg.

Yes. So why not say anything. If I were flying I would want someone to know where I was. Just in case.

A number of pilots just don't bother, because it's time consuming. If you're flying VFR, and avoiding all the places to avoid along the way, why bother, is their thinking. You don't HAVE to file, so a lot of them don't.

Yes you make a point. Sad for the pilot.

Well since I got you here. Look up

Sunshineaero.com

But reading most of what you post. You probably already know it. This site I posted is in no way meant to derail your thread. But with planes going rouge. Who knows.

A lot. There's just not much I don't notice.

I happened to be researching another company in the Florida area a few years ago and came across these guys during that quest.

“At this point we’re still examining the air traffic control tapes and radar to determine if there was any communication between the aircraft and the control tower,” said Jay Neylon, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board.

There is the possibility he landed without clearance.

There has been crashes between 2 aircraft where a second plane wreckage was not noticed immediately due to fog.

Edit:

I should have used the runway incursion with 2 planes.

I was referring to other airports. The planes didn't go unnoticed for a long time but it shows sometimes visibility makes for difficulty.

I was just discussing this with our local contract tower and it was interesting to hear their take on it. There main questions were this:

Did the pilot contact when advised?
-- My guess is no and probably didn't have the local ATIS frequency to contact on the right frequency.

If the pilot did contact the local position at the tower, they would have advised to contact ground once he landed.
-- This is what led to to believe my answer above; he never advised on initial contact.

Was it foggy? What was the weather? I am looking that up so it would be interesting to see if there was a heavy fog or anything that inhibited sight of a crash.

Interesting indeed.

I was in Kentucky yesterday, and we had pretty bad fog. We got a weather alert for Nashville saying dense fog until 10am. That was later in the morning, but we pulled out of where we had parked around 3 or 3:30 am and the fog was pretty bad.

I drive past the Nashville airport two or three times a week. There was still thick fog in the area Tuesday morning even at 9:00 AM when I drove by. Not sure where he crashed on the airport but there are thick woods in the area.
He may have talked to the tower, been cleared to land and told to contact ground control once down. He calls in final and then crashes just before landing. As far as tower is concerned he landed ok.
I heard the 02 runway was closed Tuesday morning so that at least tells you what runway he was landing on.
There isn't a whole lot of traffic at BNA, Nashville airport, over night.
I'll ask around and see if I can find some more info.

Amazing story. I now have a mental image of a guy asking for assistance trying to land in the fog, being ignored cos everyone was asleep and being forced to try and get down anyway and getting killed as a result.

Well I stand corrected it seems he did not contact the tower and landed in heavy fog.
The crash was 500 feet from the approach end of runway 2C.
Looks like he hit hard and went off to the right side if the runway.
The pilot did not file a flight plan that included Nashville.
The wreckage was about the size of a car.

Just saw this. Take this with a grain of salt since it's unconfirmed at this time:

"Pilot's Criminal Past
It is believed the Michael Callan who died in the plane crash is the same Michael Callan arrested in Windsor in connection to a child porn sting.
The child porn suspect was also sentenced to 12 years in prison after a yearlong crime spree in 1996 and 1997 where he pulled off several heists and even ditched a stolen car near the Windsor Flying Club."

www.wate.com...

Another source
"NewsChannel 5 also uncovered that a man named Michael Callan of the same age has a criminal record dating back to the late 1990s in Windsor, including a number of violent bank robberies.
A Michael Callan with the same birth date was also facing charges in connection with a child porn crackdown by Windsor police last year.
The Windsor Star reported that Windsor RCMP, the lead Canadian agency in the investigation, declined to confirm if the Callan killed in the crash was one and the same, citing the cross-border jurisdictional issues and the fact that American agencies are the lead investigators in the case."

Note: If he was doing something illegal there are a ton of smaller airports in the area he could have landed at with out notice.

Be interesting to see if it's even him, or if he somehow managed to fake his death in this crash.
