As honey bees forage on nectar and drink, they are dosed with chemicals; "Neonics"
not only cause disruptions in navigation, feeding behavior, foraging activity, memory
and learning, and overall hive health; they are actually lethal to bees even
in minute low dosage harmful.

Now, a team of scientists believe they have found the molecular mechanism
through which pesticides adversely impact the immune system of honey bees.
Neonicotinoids are pesticides commonly used in Genetically Modified Crops
by Monsanto and other Round Up Ready crops.

The team’s experiments suggest that exposure to neonicotinoids
results in increased levels of a particular protein in bees that inhibits a key
molecule involved in the immune response, making the insects more
susceptible to attack by harmful viruses.

The three "Neonics" in use by the large chemical companies such as Monsanto, Bayer and Syngenta are imidacloprid thiamethoxam and clothianidin mainly on GMO Corn, Soy, and Canola

What can we do to stop this madness?
We do have a voice, let it be heard!

Support the bans already in place, research must considered

Some countries have banned and restricted the use of these toxic crops,
The U.S. needs to follow this movement and end support of large chemical
companies Monsanto, Bayer, and Syngenta.

People need to write in and phone in and make a really big stand, not vote for anyone who would continue this. If a politiican doesnt stand up and swear he's getting rid of this for good, and sign a legal contract that would make him criminally negligent and fined millions/billions or criminal charges too, then Do Not Vote For Them.

Indeed, this is beyond crucial for the pollinators who work so tirelessly
to pollinate our food for us! This is really good news, if these
Scientists continue this research they can go beyond a shadow of a doubt
to PROVE that GMO is poison, it is toxic and the transgenic
alteration of our food must stop!

These chemicals need to be banned worldwide, and any elected
representative who turns a blind eye needs to be booted out of office!

Cheers!

I'm no fan of Monsanto either, but how are they more guilty than Bayer and Syngenta in this case?

Monsanto = the seed producers, and beyond that they are the
ones that have direct contracts with the Farmers, limiting
farmers use of non GMO seeds, and non Round Up Ready crops.

Bayer and Syngenta are also guilty guilty.

Susan Kegley runs the Pesticide Research Institute, an independent
consultancy in the US. She tells Chemistry World: ‘The EU has already
implemented a minimum two-year suspension of the use of the most
toxic neonicotinoid insecticides – clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam
– on bee-attractive crops, to take effect December 1, 2013.

The US EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] remains unconvinced
that neonicotinoids could be a primary factor in recent pollinator
population declines.
This new study, in conjunction with other
observational studies showing enhanced susceptibility to pathogens
caused by exposure to neonicotinoids, should prompt
US EPA to re-evaluate the science.’

Yes, it should prompt them! It remains to be seen!

Will Monsanto and Bayer prefer to spend more millions on defeating
independent research?

If this new scientific discovery doesn't put a stop to GMO's, then nothing will... until the bees are all gone, and by then it'll be too little too late.

And I don't believe it will put a stop to this suicidal path we're on.

Quite frankly, the human species is royally screwed... Thanks to our illogical hubris.

May the gawds forgive us.

I think what we may be seeing is some nations become havens
of health for the pollinators, they hopefully can be sanctuaries
of sanity, preserving the food of the world, thankfully!

Let the other nations fall if they must, sad day it is when
such a developed nation such as The U.S. must remain under
the control of such ilk.

Let them have their worthless seed vault, what good will it be
to them if the pollinators are extinct?

Cheers!

It's not related to GMO, it's a seed coating and a set of spray insecticides used in farming. GMOs don't "ooze" neonics, and you don't have to use neonics on GMO. They're used on any crop. And should be banned.

Oh, but it has everything to do with GMO....and of course also seed coatings
applied to GMO and non GMO.

Bayer's neonicotinoid pesticides, which now coat upwards of 90 percent of US corn seeds and seeds of increasing portions of other major crops like soy, have emerged as a likely trigger for colony collapse disorder. Watch this NBC News report from last week linking bee kills in Minnesota to Bayer's highly profitable product.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Dispatch reports similar bee die-offs in Ohio farm country, with beekeepers there, too, pointing the finger at Bayer.

• One of my biggest complaints about the agrichemical industry it its market dominance. As I say above, more than 90 percent of corn seeds planted today are treated with Bayer's pesticide. What if a farmer wants to opt out, to plant seeds free of neonicotinoids? Good luck. According to a Pesticide Action Network press release I received today, farmers in the midwest are complaining that it's virtually impossible to buy untreated seeds. In other words, farmers there have two choices: either pay up for Bayer's poison, or exit the corn-growing business.

www.motherjones.com...

The suspect seed coating, a type of neonicotinoid insecticide, is applied to many genetically engineered corn seeds to kill pests the GMO Bt toxin cannot destroy.

According to International Business Times, authors of the study note the "results show that the environmental release of particles containing neonicotinoids can produce high exposure levels for bees, with lethal effects compatible with colony losses phenomena observed by beekeepers."

OK! This is good news!
Since it is unlikely that Monsanto and the like are actually going anywhere anytime soon, at least now they can alter the chemical makeup of their insecticides to treat the issue.

The issue here isn't the GM by the way, its the crap they spray on crops.
That's what they need to fix.

Sure they need to just be gone too, but first and foremost is saving the honey bee. I know that sounds weird, but we cannot lose the honey bee. We are hopeless without that tiny insect.

its the crap they spray on crops.

Actually, the entire picture is intertwined....
and your right, gmo needs to go, for many reasons.

One of them being that The Neonics is a seed coating,
in addition to it being sprayed.... 90 percent of corn,
which a large part of it is GMO corn is coated, and specifically
coated to work synergistically with the Neonics pesticides.

As the best example, Monsanto's patented seed for corn, soy
and canola...is coated with neonics...

Selected as a key part of a total solution, Acceleron® Seed Treatment Products play an integral role when paired with elite seed genetics and Genuity® trait technologies.

Acceleron® Seed Treatment Products for corn help maximize performance potential right from the start enhancing plant emergence and growth for increased yield opportunity across a broad range of geographies and growing conditions.

So, you can take the Neonics off of the seed however the genetic
makeup is designed with the Neonics in the equation.

No, it 's not. They use neonic coating on most new seeds. The GMOness of them doesn't matter at all.

eta: they always use some sort of seed coating in this way. Prior to neonics it was coppper based, before that mercury based IIRC. If you want to be disgusted even more search out seed coatings and their history. They usually use something monumentally toxic because the coat is so thin and the seed so small. You have to keep rats, weevils and ground pests from eating the seed. I never handle seed without really good gloves.

Well, I would say if your handling GMO seed, by all means wear gloves
and a face mask also.

Lucky for you, the bees have no protection, unless we move
to act on this information. They just do what they do,
and we are killing them off.

If you're handling ANY seed with a factory coat, you need to be wearing gloves.

Unless you LIKE copper or mercury, or neonics.

This is what sets organic apart, my seeds? No gloves needed.

I appreciate your input on the copper, and mercury....will look that up.
Any idea as to what year this started?

Were these metals used as preservatives, or pesticides?
Both?

I remember seeds being funky colors and having instructions to use gloves back to when I was a yoot. More agro than home flower seeds. It keeps rats, weevils and ants away until they sprout. Probably fungus too.
