I've long held that computers should have a "Grandma mode", that locks the drive down and doesn't allow any changes to be made, no matter what "permission" is given, and you can restore the thing with a single click when something does sneak through.

They have that.

It's called using a combo of Sandboxie and either RollBack RX or Comodo Time Machine. Rollback RX is better but can be buggy so you still need to backup. Comodo time machine can also be buggy..

For some reason spme people never have problems with these programs and yet others have tons.. if bad they can crash your system worse than the virus But when they work, they are major life savers. Comodo Time Machine is also free unlike Rollback RX.

These programs work like setting a restore point but even better.. a windows restore point can be corrupted because they are on your hard drive ( same as your C drive). These programs install themselves in a hidden encrypted layer Underneath your C drive. It's essentially on th same physical disk yes, but in a locked off location nothing in your system can ever access. The restore points are stored there. A virus can wipe your entire C drive out.. delete all contents 100% leaving Nothing on your drive - and these programs will bring back you entire operating system in 5 minutes tops - when they do work LOL.. Still worth a try for protection.. it may work fine with your mother in laws PC.. just make a good backup to test it out.. just in case.

Likewise Sandboxie creates a sandbox on your c drive that prevents anything from the interner or your email from passing into the system. There is a free version.

Was going to post this but ran a search and found this thread. This thing is nasty. One of my client PCs was infected by opening an .XLS attachment from a "trusted" source.

The moral of the story here friends is not to use a #ty operating system. If you must use windows make sure it is at least Windows 7 and Fully patched , locked down and behind a firewall and a decent antivirus.

If you want to be sure though uninstall and install a major Linux Distro of your choice!

Doesn't seem to matter if it's Win7 fully patched, locked down and behind a firewall.. all of my client PCs meet those standards... and no one has admin rights.

Linux is not an option in the buisness world... we're sort of married to Microcrap...

oneday they might work it out!
