Inalienable Rights

I can't help commenting about the issue of non-citizens expressing opinions about the politics of other countries.

As an American, I'm painfully familiar with the notion so many of my fellow Americans hold that non-Americans have no business commenting on U.S. politics. Aside from the fact that our country seems to have no problems blithely imposing its political will on the rest of the world without concern for their interests, I have yet to hear of an American withholding his or her opinion out of deference for the sanctity of the political systems of other countries.

Thus any American who insists non-Americans have no business commenting on American politics is, with no exception I know of, a hypocrite.

Despite its apparent popularity, I perhaps naively insist that hypocrisy isn't an "American value", and pray a more enlightened regard for world opinion eventually holds sway.

I realize this may or may not bear on the UK political issues you've been discussing, but it did come up in passing, so I thought I should chime in.

And, of course, on ATS, it doesn't matter where we live, because as long as we do so in accordance with the terms & conditions, every ATSer is entitled to comment on anything we want -- including the politics of any country.
