This series premiered back in 1987. It was about the Soviet takeover of the United States. It starred Kris Kristofferson, Mariel Hemingway, Sam Neill, Robert Urich, and a 17-year-old Lara Flynn Boyle in her first major role.

Amerika was about life in the United States after a bloodless takeover engineered by the Soviet Union. Not wanting to depict the actual takeover, ABC Entertainment president Brandon Stoddard set the miniseries ten years after the event, focusing on the demoralized American people a decade after the Soviet conquest. The intent, he later explained, was to explore the American spirit under such conditions, not to portray the conflict of the Soviet coup.

This show chills me to the bone, this is the direction we are heading TODAY. A socialist takeover, and like in the series, it will be bloodless, because the people will allow it to happen! In another thread, Darllyn came up against someone that refused to do business with her because she flipped her flag, same with Kawrider9.
People want to remain with their heads in the sand and ignore the reality of the way things are, and the way they are going. They want to live in their fantasy world that nothing is wrong.
You couldnt be FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!!!

This scene in the series has stuck with me from the time I've seen it til now, the first 2 and a half minutes of the clip:

In the series,

The flag of the occupation is the pale blue UN flag, with crossed American and Soviet flags superimposed on the sides. The American flag is shown without its stars, and this flag is displayed during the "Lincoln Week" ceremonies.
, but this does not stop a group of citizens from singing it (haltingly at first) after the "Lincoln Week" parade.

Abraham Lincoln is included with Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin in propaganda. One of the signature scenes in the film is a twenty-minute, dialogue-free depiction of the celebration of "Lincoln Week" (a holiday replacing the Fourth of July), with both Lincoln and Lenin displayed on red banners that were most likely intended to be striking and startling to television audiences of the time.

A new Pledge of Allegiance is given by "rehabilitated" political prisoners upon release from the American gulags.

The oath states: "I pledge my allegiance to the flag of the community of American, Soviet, and United Nations of the World, and to the principle for which it stands – a nation, indivisible with others of the Earth, joined in peace, and justice for all."

While the prisoners are told that they are free to refuse to make this pledge, the circumstances under which the oath is administered suggest otherwise.

The series backstory is that the Soviet Union was about to collapse and detonated 3 Nuclear weapons over the USE, and the resulting EMP pulse disabled our defense grid allowing the USSR to come in and force the govt to surrender (sound familiar?)

The other changes of our society in the series were:

Americans who engage in dissent are stripped of their privileges and sent to exile camps, where they are anathema to the Soviets and their fellow citizens. Association with the exiles is prohibited, although a few brave souls risk their own remaining freedoms by offering humanitarian aid. Production quotas have been imposed, and foodstuffs rationed.
The standard American flag is outlawed, although one scene shows a group of war veterans marching with the old American flag upside down, this being a distress signal. America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," also is outlawed, but this does not stop a group of citizens from singing it (haltingly at first) after the "Lincoln Week" parade.

To think this could actually happen terrifies me.

The series is on Youtube, starting with the first part:

I will NEVER give up on my country! I will do what I can to keep her free and proud with my last breath!

Thanks for these and I will be watching them. I have heard other people from socialist/communistic countries literally screaming at whoever will listen that we are headed down a dark path here in America. They escaped their countries to come here and now they see it coming down the line for us. They have lived it, so they are not talking out of their asses when it comes down to it. We need to listen to those who lived it already so maybe we won't have to.

I don't plan on giving up either. I have kids and this country will be in their hands one day... at least it should be. That is too much to give up on IMO.

Its sad that they know we are heading down the SAME ROAD

That mini series sorta reminded me of a cool PC game I played recently, the storyline was written by same author who wrote Red Dawn

I'm not really afraid of communism. That will never really take hold here, because too many people expect it to come from that direction. The same goes for fascism. However, I'm afraid of something taking hold in America that's functionally the same as communism but uses different rhetorical points to achieve similar ends. I know fascism was very anti-communistic in its language but lead to a very similar reality. Whatever it is, it will utilize a skewed idea of freedom, which is precisely what communism and fascism did.

A history about those who advise, mentor, and operate behind the throne of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. From early childhood to the present day the President chose to keep his personal life a secret. Those who surround him fall into a wide category of radicals, marxists, communists, and Americans who have joined together in a coordinated effort to overthrow capitalism and the Republic of the United States of America.

And a second book

“The Enemies Within” is designed to show American voters exactly how modern communism works and how it impacts on your life, every single day. Just how do the communists win big on things like Obamacare and immigration “reform,” which go completely against the wishes of the American people? Trevor Loudon’s research has been cited by Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, countless articles, blog posts and in books by well known authors Paul Kengor, Aaron Klein and Jerome Corsi.

“The Enemies Within” profiles fourteen Senators and more than fifty Representatives. Their ties to Communist Party USA, Democratic Socialists of America, Workers World Party, the Institute for Policy Studies, Council for a Livable World and other radical anti-American organizations.

I'll admit, when I first watched this (I missed it first time around), it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck... Just an odd coincidence that these two maps are so similar??

This clip starts with Kris Kristofferson's son asking about him. He's been in a re-education facility. Be a little patient and you'll get to see the unveiling of the new map by one of the Russian bigshots.

Our leaders pointing to other countries as the problem for the US is just a distraction from those here who are morphing it into a system for their own benefit. The only way the Taliban, Al Qaeda or the other long list of enemies are going to hurt the US is through belief that they can and therefore allowing the government and leaders to operate as they have this decade.

Instilling fear into people is the best weapon both sides have and are using.

The rest of the world sees the US as being far right of center. Even the left would not be the left in most countries. Nations like Gremany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway etc. would be considered socilist countrys compared to the US and guess what they are happy, free and have booming economies. Thanks to the Cold War the word socialism is now tied to Communist Dictatorship. The fact is the US and the West in general is a mix of socialism and free market. The US leaning way more to free market side where we would prefer to pay more for lesser healthcare some big companies can make a profit is a fine example. People complain in one breath that the US is on the road to socialism and in next that big buiseness is in control and crushing the people in the name of profit. Guess what they both can not be happening. Myself seeing how companies operate with complete freedom in the US while its workers have their pay and benifits cut in the name of profit, the death of labor unions, and divide between the rich and everybody else at its greatest level ever tells me that anyone who thinks the US is on the patch to socialism is not paying attention.

All well and good, but doesn't do much to address the intent of the OP.

I personally believe that all bets are of and the community organizer ensconced in the WH will say or do anything to advance his agenda.

The point is not that ABC supposedly aired a prophetic miseries which opened a window into the future. What it did was portray a citizenry trying to come to terms with having had their government and country slip through their fingers when they weren't expecting it.

Maybe you'd be more comfortable with the word fascism:

noun
1.( sometimes initial capital letter ) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.
2.( sometimes initial capital letter ) the philosophy, principles, or methods of fascism.
3.( initial capital letter ) a political movement that employs the principles and methods of fascism, especially the one established by Mussolini in Italy 1922–43.

We're already being treated as criminals if we want to fly. There are parts of the country where you have to pass through totalitarian style checkpoints to continue on a road we bought and paid for through taxes.

I don't really care that Russia is made out to be the antagonist in the miniseries. What I care about is that you can look at those two maps and get the feeling that something has been in the works for a long time.

The OP was mainly pointing out that the inverted flag/distress signal shown in the movie was their inspiration in doing the same.

As for myself, I look at a country that somehow elected a glib, dishonest, vengeful despot by decree twice and think of a quote that weaves throughout the miniseries:

"It (the Soviet coup) worked because you lost your country before we ever got here. You had political freedom, but you lost your passion ... How could we not win?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once it's too late, you have characters in the movie making remarks like:

"Nobody wanted to risk anything for anybody else. Everybody was afraid they were going to lose what they had. They knew it was bad. They were just afraid it'd get worse. That's all they lived for – for things not to get worse."

"Damn, I'm so tired of this "I'm an American" bull! Where was all that patriotism when it counted? Where was that willingness to sacrifice? Nobody wanted to join the damn army to defend the country unless they got paid well! Nobody wanted to give any time to public service unless they could make a career out of it! And I didn't notice a lot of us giving up our lives in the last 10 years!"

"When you lose and fail, that is understandable; but when you win and fail--that brings madness."
