I have a theory though. Back in the cave man days at best our beds were made of leaves furs, and feathers. but on the hard ground.
Actually the ground is not that hard especially when compared to a floor. It also has the added benefit that you can dig a bit and make it contoured
to your body. Add a foam backpacking pad and it is comfy without the need for all those pillows that don't get the shape quite right.
(Despite the fact I am in my sixties I still sleep/rest on the ground rather often - no tent.)
